Fishing help

How do you use the big catch lure you get from the old man? I have it but I never see swordfish shadows just the small fish shadows.

You must first catch a rusty swordfish from the small fish shadows and give it to the old wayfarer (the old man) and than afterwards you should start seeing the swordfish shadows. Im not yet sure but I believe you get the next fish at the swordfish shadow and the swordfish shadow doesn't appear that often.
