Can someone please tell me how to acctivate the ? Boxes in bobom and some other levels. I really need help

Go to the yellow circle at the bottom of the stairs in the first room, and get mario to look upwards. You will be in the wing cap level. Land on the tower in the middle and jump on the big red button
