The best way to get good Pokemon is by training them. Your starter can be one of the best Pokemon in the game, and if you EV train from the start, you can have an amazing Pokemon.

Lucario_0277 answered:

Pick your favorite, then carefully train it. EV training is important. For example, I pick Cyndaquil, but so does Tegan41.

Because we both EV train Pokemon to suit our preferences, Tegan41's Cyndaquil will have different stats than mine.

I may have focused on defeating Geodudes in battles, while Tegan41 may have focused on Ratattas.

My Cyndaquil will be slower, but have a higher defense. (Tegan, did I explain that right?)

All in all, train your Pokemon to suit your liking and you'll have a powerful starter.
