Okay - So I haven't played the game in a long time and I decided to start over again - BUT I did not know I had to delete the old one first I thought once you clicked new game the old one wasn't saved anymore - So I started a new game and now it won't save because the old game is still there saved...how do I delete the old saved file without ruining the new game I started? =

You can't. You have to delete the old save file before you can save a new one. You delete the old save file by pressing Up+Select+B at the title screen. This means that if you started a new file, you have to quit out of it without saving to delete the old file, and only then can you save a new one.
Tip: Whenever you start a new file, ALWAYS try to save as soon as you can. This way, if there is a problem then you won't loose much.
All main series Pokemon games since the begining of generation 4 have the same feature (not letting a new file be saved until the old one is deleted).
