Okay first open your back, then go to your key items. Next to your items you'll see a little check box. Click on the item you want and hit Register. This will let you use the item. Now though instead of hitting Select all you need to do is hit the Y button.

I have not heard of the select button being the register items button since either Firered/Leafgreen...You now use the y button, and there will be a square next to the items you can register, just check the square, and then when you want to use the items just press the y button and you can searxh through all your registered items.
