I had the same problem once.
I believe there's a way to reset the game, look that up, and do as it says. I think all you have to do is press a couple of buttons and it resets itself. Of course, you lose all your dogs, items, and money, but maybe use this as a last resort.

If you press L are A B X and Y when the game is loading, it will reset it.
Try not to make the dog have a red question mark or it takes longer to name your dog. When I did it, I did it in 3 tries without getting a red question mark. Hope this helps.
Its real easy you just have to be pacient some new puppies can be fustrating just give her/him some time I hope it helps
