It would've been easier if you had the mini-mushroom in your inventry. Once you got the mini-mushroom (blue small mushroom) in your inventry, get to the boss and use it after you hit him once. Than once you small, ground pound him to kill him (I think it's either another 1 or 2 hits once small to kill him). You are unable to use the mushroom after you kill the boss, me and my sister had tried this.

I woudl recommend starting the level as reg mario and hitting the boss 2 times as regular mario then use the mini mushroom and deliver the final blow as mini mario
