Try to use a kart that has good acceleration, such as Yoshi's egg kart or Mario's B Dasher. Avoid karts such as Bowser's Tyrant.

It seems I've found the best kart to be Luigi's Standard Kart, as it has decent Speed, Acceleration, and Handling, which are all top traits to have. It also collects a decent amount of 'good' items as well. It took me until the Mirror 150cc to figure this out though.
