The missions, as far as I know, don't unlock any characters.

No, but you do unlock the seventh mission

The mission can't unlock charecters, but you can get a 7th mission.

You can't get any characters in mission but you can get the 7th mission with one star in each. Go into races and get gold metals in all one cup.
