Unlocking characters and collecting hats and tokens

How do you unlock characters? I've played the whole of the first year and still dont have most the hats, only 3 of the red bricks and 1 token. I've gone back to the levels and there are loads of things I cant do, for example, in the very fisrt level i cant go in any of the rooms in the house as the doors are all outlined in red. (i've tried in story and freeplay)
and in every other level there are chests and other things all outlined in red.
How on earth do you get to be able to do them?
It seems a bit ridicluous if you have to go back and do each level again. This is driving me mad!

When you have a red outline, you either A) Don't know that spell OR B) You don't have that charictor.
Sont worry, I need more charitors.

You unlock characters by going to the shop in the Room of Requirements. Should be on the bottom floor on left side of stair case. You have to get the Wizard cards found in each level to buy them. I found that playing through the whole game one time gave me enough coins and cards to be able to buy most of the characters I needed on replay.

To interact with the objects in red outlines, try completing the whole game first and unlocking a load of spells. Go back to the red outlined objects on free play and, if you have the right character in your party, the outlines should have turned green. For example, the doors in the first level are red because you haven't unlocked Alohomora yet, you know, the unlocking charm. Basically, COMPLETE THE GAME FIRST.

In the 4th year you learn alahormano, the unlocking spell and if the chests are floating in the air, you need desendo for that, you will learn desendo in year 2. Also if you see blocks or platforms outlined in red you can use accio which you will also learn in year 4.
