Wow- this is a really good question, and I've been having trouble actually getting an answer to you. Your "level" is actually your Farming Degree. Each time you experience an event (heart events, etc) you'll get a point towards your degree. Unfortunately, you can't see the break down of points on any screen, just your final total. I also can't tell you if it will ever change from apprentice. I'm really sorry I can't help more!
