Question for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I'm early stages of the game, and have reached the part in which you must feead and pat the thestrals, however, I can not seem to 'pat' them successfully ... Is there a knack to this?!?! Thanks

You just make a circle in the direction that it tells you in the top screen in the designated area. After three times of doing this, you will have completed it.

I was stuck on that 2 but you have to pet in a circular motion of what the top screen says what you do
