The player 1 always get 1st place when tie for points in Mario kart 64, how about a tie for time, like example both you and one of the A.I. Characters have 2"56'55 as a finish time, if it his a 1 player gp race and a timer tie happen on the first race, the A.I take priority, and gets the position above the player, however if it happen in the 2nd race and you finish 2nd place in the first race, if you tie for time against the one that beats you in the first race you lose again to them, if you tie for time against the one that you beat in the last race, you win against them. In a two player grand prix player 1 is always first when it his a tie for points, or a tie for time, no matter what, Player 2 is always first if tie for time or points with the A.I characters no matter what. A tie for points is a tie for points, his just the game does not have a programing to place 2 players receiving the gold cup
Mario kart double dash a tied for points between 2 player was determine by who had the best total time from the previous race, A tie for time between player was determine by either the one who caught up to the other in that single race, or the one with the best total of the first two lap of single race, if the race was only 2 lap the one with the best 1st lap. In vs mode if a tied for time happen player 1 always get the victory, Mario kart Wii, and Mario kart Ds a tie for time between two player was determine by who caught up to the other in a single race. Mario kart 8 and Mario kart 7 a tied for time his determine logically, by making the one that start further behind the pack from a single race win the tied even against a.i. Like for example if you finish first on the first race, and on the second race you tied for time with an A.I. Or a player, you will lose to that player, or A.I. Opponent, and you can see it in the highlights for Mario kart 8 only to see if you cross the finish line at the same time. I know that Mario kart 7 did not have highlights however it should work the same do to be similar.
