Helping someone's farm will either be by watering their plants or filling crates on their boat.
At the bottom of your screen, where your friends and followers tabs are, there's a tab with an exclamation mark "!". People on your friends list who need help will appear in that tab, it automatically refreshes every few seconds.
If your followers need help, the exclamation mark will appear on their avatar in the followers tab, you have to look there separately.
In the newspaper, people needing help will have the exclamation mark on their avatar in the actual newspaper, so you can see right away which farms need help.

you can tap on the boat to see if you can help with an order, or tap on a tree or bush with an exclamation mark on it to revive it.
