Keep an eye on the hut icon that is at the top right side of the screen as this tells you the amount of storage space you have left for your crafted items and junk. If it is getting low you can upgrade storage space by collecting certain items or by spending Dubloons.
Avoid unnecessarily spending Dubloons to unlock new gathering slots or upgrading your strorage space early. These things can be done by being patient and waiting to reach the proper level and collecting certain items.
Phil will throw a party for the entire island whenever you have earned enough Party Points, this is basically leveling up and will unlock new things for you to build. When the party ends and the temporary speed boost begins make sure you take advantage of it by having every Minion available collecting resources and crafting items.
Play the mini-games while you are waiting for your other minions to finish whatever it is they are doing. Mini-games are unlocked as you access the islands and they are a good way to earn Party Points and Sand Dollars, especially if you hit a milestone.

Try to save the Doubloons you earn, although the Tutorial prompts you to spend them to speed things up it is more beneficial to hang onto them for useful things like permanent upgrades.
Don't waste Dubloons on speeding up the game, they are better saved for permanent upgrades like adding an extra item slot to item construction buildings like the Armoury.
Craft Items to help make more space in your storage. Also you should always try to keep your crafting buildings working as a lot of items can take a lot of time to build.
Initially things only take a few minutes, eg a grenade. But later in the game things can take 45 minutes or longer.
Check out the bulletin board to the right of Phil's bar whenever possible to see what requests you have received as completing these will earn you Party Points and Sand Dollars.
When you notice that your storage space is getting low you can always sell things to make more room. Remember though that once posted if nobody buys your stuff you will have to spend Dubloons to delete them. When you reach level 8 the Captain will appear and you will be able to sell stuff to him.
