Question for Star Fox Adventures
How do I light the torches in Dino Village with the little Dino that follows me around? I tried his heat breath and tried hitting the tree that burns of flame, What do I do to continue with this game?

2 things first.
1: His name is Tricky, Prince Tricky to be more correct.
2. You mean Thorntail Hollow. You described the place and I thought you meant Lightfoot village x)
Well you are on the right track. You are supposed to hit the tree with the staff so it will fall burning stickballs. When they are off the tree just get close enough and hit them, then you will need to collect three of them 
After getting them you will need to find them on your red list (the c button) and place them on the torches. Then use trickys heath breath to light them up
