Question for Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Ok I must be the only one that can't beat the first guy in rougeport. I have hit him and hit him getting the 2 points. I swear he will not die. I have sat here for over half an hour doing this. I am using my action replay and cannot die. Please tell me why he won't die or what I am doing wrong!

Use action guards and try to not use AR codes. Sometimes they do the opposite of what they're supposed to do.
