You do not grow pontata roots. You can find them in the moonlight mountain mines. They are on the very first floor when you walk in. You can dig around with your hoe to find them.

You pretty much can find them on all levels of the mine. The exception being the "DUD" levels. A few are 41 44 and 52 I think although I colnd be wrong.
