Here's an easier way. Have you received Tartan yet? He's a plant that appears in Takakura's hut in the second year. Just go into Takakura's house in the evening when he's home and you'll get a cutscene. Just keep talking to the plant until' he gives you the 'hybrid' option alongwith 'analize' and 'talk'. What you do is you take a B rated vegetable and put that in the first slot. In the second slot you place an UPseed flower which grows only in the Winter. Just for reference the UPseed grows over by Cody's trailer and then on along the river like you're going to the Dig site. Anyway, once you join those you're left with an S ranked whatever seed. Now, you take a B ranked tree seed of whatever kind banana or whatever; anyway you put the tree seed in the FIRST slot and the S rank seed in the SECOND slot. What comes out? An S ranked tree seed. Easy no?
Fertilizer does help your trees grow faster and I think it also helps the quality of your plants go up as well. If you play Harvest Moon Another Wonderful Life, you have to buy fertilizer for your pasture, because fodder doesn't grow unless your fertilize your pasture.
