Question for Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls

I'm so confused! I am in the Temple of Chaos (the final dungeon). I beat Lich, the fiend of earth for the second time. Now that I'm on the Fire Floor (BF2), I can't get to the stairs for the next room! The path is blocked by pillar things. HELP!
