in order to defeat the first monster you need to throw sokka's boomerang at the monster's arms while dodging the three consecutive fire blasts that come from the middle. once the monster is down (which is indicated by the metal giant tilting on its side and glowing in a pulsating manner) you then attack with aang's air strike at the center of the monster until its health bar goes to zero, and it explodes.

try hitting the arms of the robot with sokka's boomerang then, if both hands are down try knocking it with aang..
