It also shows the general locations for each and every item, then specific instructions for exactly how to get them. Also included in this walkthrough are the specific methods for getting through the dungeons as fast as possible. If you're starting to read this in the middle of your game, be sure to skim the parts of the guide that follow the earlier parts of the game to make sure you didn't miss any items so far. The walkthrough follows this general outline: a. (Items available before first dungeon) - Get <first item> <location> Instructions of exactly how to get the item - Get <next item> <location> ... 1. (first dungeon) Dungeon notes: (General things to know about the dungeon) Step-by-step dungeon walkthrough: To the compass To the map To the secret item To the boss b. (Items available after the first dungeon) etc. TIMELINE [0002] Most popularly believed to take place directly after A Link to the Past. STORYLINE [0003] After months of travel and journey, Link sails back to his homeland Hyrule breathing a deep sigh of relief. Our young champion is exhausted although his worst was yet to come. At first, it started a small drizzle, barely something you'd call a storm. However, as the day slowly turns to night, the diminutive drizzle immediately transforms into a raging storm. While Link frantically tries to bring down the mast and hold his boat together, a stray bolt of lightning strikes directly in the hub of our hero's ship. Link's boat, although sturdy and quite durable, was utterly no match for the raging bolt that effortlessly reduces it to splinters. Has Link's crisis ended him forever? Washed up on the sandy beach of an uncharted island, Link lies unconscious and quite wounded. A young girl walks slowly, but excitedly towards Link. Finally getting the courage to investigate, the young maiden takes him for healing and reviving. Back at her dwelling, Link awakens seeing Zelda stationed right above him? But no, the young girl goes by the name Marin. "What's going on?" Link wonders. Little does Link know that his plight is far from over. As Link gets out of bed, he figures he must retrieve his belongings and sort things out. That however, may prove a bit difficult. COMMENTS [0004] Link's Awakening, despite being the Game Boy successor of a console game, became a classic in its own right. LA, along with having its own unique story and musical charm, invented a few Zelda components that have become standards since its release. The first invention was the addition of a trading sequence, a feature seen many times after LA. Second, LA was the first to have a fishing minigame, now accepted to be Link's favorite pastime. Third, LA introduced the Ocarina! Though there was a Flute in the original LoZ, you could only play one tune on it. Now the musical instrument is given more prominence. Also, this is the first Zelda game where Link gets a female admirer besides Zelda, in this case Marin. On one hand, LA is not as epic as ALttP; Link can only have 14 hearts, for one, and there are only eight total dungeons. On the other hand, LA is more challenging than ALttP when it comes to completing the game 100%; Link must hunt down 20 Secret Seashells, collect 12 Heart Pieces, and finish the trading sequence. You can find most of the Secret Seashells after the second dungeon actually, when the Shovel becomes available; most of the Seashells have to be dug up. There are actually 25 Secret Seashells in all, but you only have to collect 20 to get the Master Sword; I included the Seashells that let you get the Master Sword the soonest. Search under bushes, under rocks, and under the dirt for the seashells. Keep checking the map to see what area you are at and where you need to go according to the walkthrough. Like in LoZ, money takes on a new importance in LA; you have to do serious saving up to purchase all the necessary items. If you want to do a little cheating, you can steal items from the shop in Mabe Village by walking around the store owner until he's facing the wrong way, then quickly exiting. Keep in mind that if you do this, everyone will start calling you thief; and if you try to enter the shop again, the store owner will kill you! Despite LA's small appearance, the map contains many tricky areas that contain hard-to-solve puzzles. While they may not be as difficult as in the future Oracle of Ages/Seasons games, they still present a surprising challenge. The dungeons kick up the difficulty at the sixth dungeon. Eagle's Tower, in particular, is a challenge where you must find and destroy four pillars to reach the dungeon's boss. Once you get Manbo's Mambo for the Ocarina, remember you can use it to warp to the beginning of the dungeons so you don't get lost. Note that for the most part, the dungeons in this game are single-floored, like in the original Legend of Zelda. There's the compass, map, and boss key, which have become standards. In this game, there is also the stone beak; this item is useless because it just gives access to hints from owl statues. Therefore, those items will be ignored. Long-distance travel around Koholint can be somewhat difficult. The Manbo's Mambo can only be used to warp to one place, the pond near the Mysterious Forest. Otherwise, you have to use warps to get around: There are warps just east of Mabe Village, directly south of Animal Village, below the Angler's Tunnel, and outside the eighth dungeon. You need only see the warps once to be able to use them. The DX version of Link's Awakening added a few nifty features to the original. In that game, there is an additional collecting quest, this time in completing a photo album (most of the photos are gotten when you join up with Marin). There is also a completely new Color Dungeon that can be accessed after completing the third dungeon, in which Link gains as a prize either the Red Suit for increased offense or the Blue suit for increased defense. =============================================================================== =====================================Quest===================================== =============================================================================== Before Dungeon 1 [0101] New Items: L-1 Shield L-1 Sword Yoshi Doll Hair Bow Dog Food Bananas Toadstool Magic Powder Tail Key 1 Secret Seashell (#1) 2 Heart Pieces (#1-#2) - Get L-1 Shield (Tarin's House) Get this shield from Tarin in the house Link wakes up in. - Get L-1 Sword (Toronbo Shores) From Tarin's house, go west twice, then south four times to reach Toronbo Shores. Go north twice more, then east twice and enter the small cave. After exiting from the other side, get the Toadstool lying on the ground. - Get Magic Powder (Witch's Hut) Go back through the cave. Go north twice, then east twice out of the forest. Go south twice and east once to get to the witch's hut. Give the witch inside the Toadstool, and she will make you Magic Powder. - Get Tail Key (Mysterious Forest) Go back west, north twice, then west into the forest again. Go west once, south twice, west once, then north once. Use Magic Powder on the racoon to get rid of him, then go north and get the Tail Key from the chest. 1. Tail Cave [0102] Get Roc's Feather Defeat Moldorm Get Full Moon Cello and Heart Dungeon notes: To get to Tail Cave, the first dungeon, go south twice from the Mabe Village well, then go east three times. Go around to the southwest, south, then east, and use the Tail Key on the keyhole to open up the dungeon. Link's first dungeon romp is rather tame- there aren't any really threatening enemies or traps to worry about. Find the map and compass as soon as possible; the map gives an easy layout of the dungeon and the compass gives the location of the boss (and the treasure chests, in the DX version). The Roc's Cape gives Link the ability to jump across about two tiles of space. To beat the Mini-Nightmare right before the boss, jump over the spiked roller and slash the monster with your sword. When battling Moldorm, don't fall off the side or you'll have to climb back up and restart the battle! Just aim at the tail with your sword and swing away until it's dead. To the compass: - Go west once, knock the enemies into the pits, and get the key. - Go west and get the compass from the chest. To the map: - From the entrance, go north, hit the switch, and get the key from the chest. - Go east, defeat the enemies and get the map from the chest. Before Dungeon 2 [0103] New Items: 1 Heart Piece (#3) - Get Heart Piece #3 (East of Mysterious Forest) When you get back to Mabe Village, you find out that Bow-wow the chaindog has been kidnapped by Moblins. Go north and back through the Mysterious Forest. On the screen one west and two north from the Witch's hut, jump across the pits and get the Heart Piece on the platform. - Rescue Bow-wow (Moblin Cave) From the Heart Piece, go north, then east and enter the Moblin's hideout. Go through, killing the enemies until you get to the King Moblin. Avoid him when you runs at you, then slice him up when he's stunned. Go east and get Bow-wow from the post. 2. Bottle Grotto [0104] Get L-1 Power Bracelet Defeat Genie Get Conch Horn and Heart Dungeon notes: From the Moblin hideout, go back into the forest to the west. Go west three times, across the pit. Go north, then east along the southern path until you get to the swamp area. Get to the dungeon entrance in the northeast corner, letting Bow-wow eat the plants as you go on. Bottle Grotto is a mysterious dungeon, filled with pots, dark rooms where the Magic Powder comes in handy, and surprise traps. You can't even dispose of the pots, however, until you get the L-1 Power Bracelet. With this item, Link can lift any number of small pots and boulders, and reach many areas thatwere blocked before. The Mini-Nightmare Hinox is a simple hack-and-slash affair. The Nightmare, Genie, however, is somewhat tricker: Avoid its fireballs, slash at its 'lamp' when it lunges at you, and throw the lamp at the wall several times to make it leave its lamp. Then, just whack it with your sword until it dies. To the compass: - Go north, light the torches with Magic Powder, and go east. - Kill the enemies and get the key, then go south through the locked door. - Kill the enemy and get the compass from the chest. To the map: - Go back north, then east. - Hit the crystal and go south. - Hit another crystal and get the key from the chest, then go east. - Jump to the other side and step on the switch, and get the key. - Jump to the north and kill the enemies to make a key appear. - Go back south, west, north, then east to get the key. - Go back to where you were, and go east. - Go north through the locked door. - Push the blocks together, then go through the secret passage. - Go north and defeat the Mini-Nightmare, then go east. - Go north, then get the map from the chest. To the secret item: - Go west through the locked door. - Light the torches, and get the Power Bracelet from the chest. To the boss: - Go back east, then east past the pots along the north path. - Get the key from the chest, hit the crystal and go east twice. - Go south, kill the Pol's Voice, then the Stalfo, then the bat to get the Nightmare's Key. - Go back north, then east through the locked door. - Kill the enemies and go down to the secret passage. - Lift up a pot and stand on the platform to get through the passage. - Go north to get to the boss. Kill the ball-and-chain enemy to get the last Gold Leaf. - Get Secret Seashell #7 (Richard's Tunnel) Go back to Richard's house, and he'll open up a tunnel for you inside once you have all the Gold Leaves. In the tunnel, go left at the fork and get the Secret Seashell from the chest. - Get Slime Key (Richard's Field) Go up the right-hand side of Richard's tunnel and outside to a giant field. Avoid the hidden pits as you go south, east, north, then west to an owl statue. Dig in front of the statue with the shovel to get the Slime Key. - Get Secret Seashell #8 (Ukuku Prairie) Go one screen east from the Seashell Shrine, then chop up the bushes to find the next Secret Seashell. - Get Secret Seashell #9 (Ukuku Prairie) Go south, west, and south twice from the Seashell Shrine, then lift up the rock and get the seashell underneath. - Get Secret Seashell #10 (Ukuku Prairie) From the last seashell, go west and enter the cave. Go up the stairs and to the west, then dig in the spot surrounded by grass to get the next Secret Seashell. The entrance to the dungeon is in the screen to the south. 3. Key Cavern [0106] Get Pegasus Boots Defeat Slime Eye Get Sea Lily's Bell and Heart Dungeon notes: The Key Cavern is one of the easiest dungeons to get lost in, simply because there are an overwhelming number of keys in it. Fortunately, it is impossible to get trapped- there is always a key that leads to the next room, no exceptions. Finding those keys usually just requires defeating all the enemies in a single room; make sure you try that whenever you are stuck. The Pegasus Boots you get inside can propel Link forward faster, usually to ram into objects, or to increase his jumping distance. The Dodongos are the Mini-Nightmares in this dungeon: As in the first Zelda game, they are easily defeated by making them swallow a few bombs. To defeat the Slime Eye boss, first run into the wall to knock it down, then ram it with the Pegasus Boots until it splits into two eyes. Then, ram-attack or spin attack the two eyeballs while jumping to avoid getting stunned, until they are dead. To the map: - Throw a pot at the north door and go through. - Defeat the enemies and get the key, then go northeast. - Defeat the enemies and go north twice, down the stairs. - Go north through the locked door, defeat the enemies and get the key. - Hit the crystal, go back south and down the stairs, then south twice. - Go east and get the map from the chest. To the compass: - In the four-door room, go east through the locked door and up the stairs. - Defeat the enemies and get the key, then go north. - Go north, east, then north. - Defeat the enemies and go west, then get the compass from the chest. Slice up the bush and enter the tunnel, then use the Pegasus Boots to run through it to the east. Once outside again, go south twice, then east to enter the village. Enter the house in the southeast corner, then give the Honeycomb to the bear to get a Pineapple in return. - Get Secret Seashell #16 (Martha's Bay) Leave Animal Village to the northwest, then go south twice, west, and north up the bridge. Go north from here up the steps, then into the cave. Once outside again, go east and into the cave. Once outside, go southwest. Give the Pineapple to Papahl and get the Hibiscus in return. 4. Angler's Tunnel [0108] Get Flippers Defeat Angler Fish Get Surf Harp and Heart Dungeon: From underneath where Papahl is, go east twice, and drop down the gap to enter the fourth dungeon below. This game's water dungeon isn't too bad- The dungeon map and compass are easily accessible at the beginning, and the path through the dungeon is fairly linear. There are many possible sequence breaks in this dungeon, involving the crossways pit early on in the dungeon, but this guide follows the normal path through, no special tricks required. With the Flippers, Link can now swim in deep water! He will use that ability in this dungeon to reach the end rooms, and to reach the last few dungeons. The Mini-Nightmare is an easy cueball-shaped enemy that dies after a few sword swipes. The Angler Fish boss is fairly easy as well; strike its ball overhanging from its head with your sword and avoid its lunges. To the compass: - Go north, kill the enemies and go east. - Get the compass from the chest. To the map: - Kill the enemies and go south. - Jump over to the chest and get the key. - Kill the enemies and go back north, then go back west. - Go east, north twice along the catwalk, and east. - Go north and get the map from the chest, then go back south. Give the Necklace to the mermaid and get the Mermaid's Scale in return. - Purchase Bow and Arrows (980 rupees) (Mabe Village) You should have enough rupees by now to purchase this from the Mabe Village item shop- otherwise, you can just steal it. 5. Catfish's Maw [0110] Get Hookshot Defeat Slime Eel Get Wind Marimba and Heart Dungeon notes: To get to dungeon five, just swim one screen south from the mermaid in Martha's Bay. Dive into the secret tunnel to the southwest of the entrance, and go through to enter the Catfish's Maw. This dungeon is a slimy and slippery place, and its principle item is the hookshot. The hookshot attaches to an object across a long distance, and propells Link over that gap to the item. Using it, he can reach many-many platforms and areas that were out of reach before. The hookshot also doubles as a weapon- in this game, it can serve as an alternate to the regular sword, especially in this dungeon. The Mini-Nightmare in this dungeon is a Stalfo that follows you around constantly, and you will have to fight it four times in four different rooms before you can defeat it. Each time, just spin attack it with your sword, then lay a bomb on it to hurt it. Follow the signs exactly until you reach the end- you will have to use the Hookshot to cross a gap at one point. At the end, a secret tunnel opens up. Go west, north, and west past all the stones. Get into the water down the south steps and swim south. Touch the west statue and enter the hidden tunnel. On the other side, insert the Face Key into the keyhole and the dungeon opens up. The last three dungeons of this game are much longer and more difficult than any dungeon you've faced so far: The puzzles get trickier, and enemies more threatening. The Face Shrine is basically divided into two halves, with the left-hand side being the one to clear first. The L-2 Power Bracelet is a simple upgrade of your old Power Bracelet, and with it Link can lift up much heavier objects than before. To defeat the annoying Wizzrobe enemies, hit them with arrows or a single bomb. Midway through the dungeon, you will face the Mini-Nightmare. Avoid the huge ball it throws at you, then pick it up and slam the creature with the ball yourself. The Nightmare, Facade, is very easy to defeat; just avoid the items thrown around the room and lay bombs on his face until he is destroyed. To the secret item: - Go west, north twice, then west. - Lay a bomb on the crystal, step on the rising northeast block, then go northeast to the next room. - Bomb the east wall and go through. - Kill the enemies, then go through the secret passage. - Kill the enemies and go north, then get the L-2 Power Bracelet from the chest. Pick up the rooster at any time to fly around with it. - Get Bird Key (TalTal Heights) From the ledge above Angler's Tunnel (the fourth dungeon), go east, north up the steps, then west twice. Enter the cave near the Cuckoo house, go west, then north past all the blocks. Use the rooster to fly over the big gap, then go west to get the Bird Key. Drop down a hole back to the outside 7. Eagle's Tower [0114] Get Mirror Shield Defeat Evil Eagle Get Organ of Evening Calm and Heart Dungeon notes: From the cave with the Bird Key, drop down a hole back to the outside, then go east three times and into another cave. Go out the other side and to the east. You will go through a series of linear caves until you reach the very top of the mountain; go west, insert the Bird Key and enter Eagle's Tower. The Eagle's Tower is a multi-layered dungeon powered by many crystal switches and shifting enemies. The object of the dungeon is to destroy the four pillars that support the main tower: First, you must locate each pillar, then you must transport the steel orb found in one room of the dungeon to that pillar and use it to destroy it. Throwing the orb into a pit re-locates it back to its original room. When the four pillars are destroyed, the final rooms become accessible. You get the Mirror Shield in this dungeon which blocks just about every type of projectile, including the giant fireballs that prevent you from getting to the eighth dungeon. To 'defeat' the Mini-Nightmare, just destroy all of his bats in one wave. When you reach the boss at the top of the tower, slice him with your sword to damage him, and use the Pegasus Boots to avoid getting knocked off by the gusts of wind. Remember that if you fall off, you will have to restart the battle. To the map: - Go east twice, kill the enemies and get the key. - Go north through the locked door, then north up the stairs. - Go north, pull the lever to open the blocks, then go west, carrying the orb. - Throw the orb at the pillar to destroy it (#1). - Go north, throw the horseheads until they are both right-side up, then get the map from the chest. To the secret item: - Go southeast, east, then south twice. - Hit the crystal, go north and get the orb, then go northwest, west past the block, then northeast. - Go down the southwest path and throw the orb over the rail. - Go back north, then back down the stairs. - Go west, south twice, then up the stairs. - Go south, defeat Hinox, and get the key. - Go north twice, avoid the floor tiles, then go east. - Throw the orb at the pillar to destroy it (#3), then throw the orb into a pit to return it to its original spot. - Go east, then south twice and hit the crystal. - Go north twice, then east, grab the orb and go south. - Throw the Boomerang at the crystal and get the Mirror Shield from the chest. To the boss: - Go south, then west past the locked block, carrying the orb. - Go west again and throw the orb over the rail, hit the card enemies so that they match each other, then go west. - Go north twice, avoid the floor tiles, then go east. - Bomb the south wall and go through, then bomb the south wall and go through after that. - Hookshot to the chest, grab the orb and go north. - Throw the orb at the pillar to destroy it (#4). - From the Mirror Shield chest, go south, west, hit the crystal, then go up the stairs. - Go north, then east, and defeat the Mini-Nightmare. - Go north, push the blocks together, and get the Nightmare's Key from the chest. - Go back south, then go west twice. - Go north through the Nightmare's door, go up the steps and hookshot to the opposite ledge, then go south. - Go east and up the stairs to get to the boss. Inside, bomb the south wall and go through, then go east to get the Heart Piece. - Get 60 Bombs Upgrade (TalTal Heights) Go back west and north, then go west and down the stairs. Once you are outside the tunnel, make your way up to the top of the mountain, avoiding all the falling boulders. At the top, go west once, lift up the lone stone and enter the secret tunnel. Inside, use Magic Powder on the well to get the bomb upgrade, then go back outside. 8. Turtle Rock [0116] Get Heart Piece #12 (TalTal Heights) Get Fire Rod Defeat Hot Head Get Thunder Drum and Heart Dungeon notes: From the bomb upgrade, go west and down the gap, then bomb the cracked wall and go enter. Go north and use the Mirror Shield to get past the spouting flames, and go west. Outside, follow the path west until you get to a giant turtle head. Play the Song of Soul, and it will come alive; slice it up with your sword, then enter the dungeon. Turtle Rock isn't as difficult as Eagle's Tower, but Link will still face a ton of obstacles in this, the final dungeon. There is a new puzzle device in here: A pathmaker. You will use this device to create a path across lava to the next room, or to completely fill in a bottomless pit to unlock a secret item. The most annoying new enemies are the fire gargoyles: Jump attack them to split them into two bats, and they'll fly off. Of course, once you get the Fire Rod, all the common enemies will be incredibly easy. The Fire Rod is an outstanding weapon, and instantly kills just about all common foes in one hit. To get to it, however, you have to make sure you've hit a crystal switch in a certain room beforehand. The Mini-Nightmare in this dungeon can be a major threat- whatever you do, don't get hit by his sucker punch, or you'll be thrown back to the entrance of the dungeon! The Nightmare is not very difficult; just stand back and use the Fire Rod on him non-stop until he dies. End of the Quest [0117] New Items: 60 Arrows Upgrade - Get 60 Arrows Upgrade (Martha's Bay) Go all the way back to the ghost's house near Toronbo Shores. Go east three times, jumping over the big gap, to the southeast corner of this area. Use the Fire Rod to clear a path through the bushes, then jump across and enter the secret tunnel. Swim through the tunnel to the other side, then go west to another tunnel. Use Magic Powder on the well to get this upgrade. - Defeat Dethl (Wind Fish's Egg) Now, you are ready to enter the Wind Fish's Egg and confront the final boss of the game! First, enter the Mabe Village library, then use the Magnifying Lens to read the book in the southeast corner. Write down the path the book tells you, since it is completely random. Now, play Manbo's Mambo, and go east and north to get to TalTal Heights. Go north, around to the west, then up and around to the east, then climb the giant steps to the north. At the top of this mountain, play the Ballad of the Wind Fish in front of the egg. It will open up, and you can enter. Go north and drop down into the pit. Now, inside the Wind Fish maze, go in the directions that the book described. After the final direction, you should reach a pit. Drop down it to reach the final Nightmares. To destroy the first form, just use Magic Powder on it until it dies. The second form takes on the shape of Agahnim from A Link to the Past. Deflect its energy orbs with your sword to damage it. The third form takes on the shape of the Moldorm from the first dungeon; slice its tail with your sword until it's gone. The fourth form takes on the shape of your long-term foe, Ganon! Spin attack or ram attack it with your sword, and it will eventually disappear. To destroy the fifth form, just shoot it with an arrow or the Fire Rod once. You will now face the final Nightmare, Dethl! Equip the Roc's Cape and use it to jump over its swinging arms, and shoot arrows at its eye when it opens up. Do this until it is finally destroyed. It will also die if you just hit it with the Boomerang in the eye once. When you have defeated it, the Wind Fish wakes and you have beaten the game! =============================================================================== =========================Link's Awakening DX Extras============================ =============================================================================== 1. Color Dungeon [0202] Defeat Bubblehead Get Red Clothes OR Blue Clothes Dungeon notes: The Color Dungeon is completable after the third dungeon in the DX version. Read the book to find this combination: 3 ^ 4 -> 5 ^ 2 <- 1 V From the Witch's hut, go east, south, then east. Push the gravestones in the order described in the book to open up the secret entrance. The Color Dungeon is uniquely designed and fairly short- but with several difficult switch puzzles and battles. There are two Mini-Nightmares: Defeat the first gelatinous boss by using Magic Powder on him, and slice up the second with your sword while avoiding the earthquakes and boulders. The Nightmare can be frustratingly difficult; you will have to keep kamikaze Ram attacking it with the Pegasus Boots while avoiding the projectiles until it turns yellow, then red, then dead.
