Question for Pokemon Gold

Ok I got an onix (rocky) in the trade with bell sprout in that one town and hes advancing wuickly, I was wonering if and when he will evolve into steelix I think it is, or if I should work on other Pokemon and just make him a bit more stronger. And do the gyms get harder really fast? Because I played it for about a day and I'm already almot half way through the eight badges, is there more? Because I got the game from someone else and they had 16 badges, and where is the rarest Pokemon in the game? Plz answer soon! I don't wanna win entire game with a lvl 20 some quillava because thats what it looks like I'm going to do!

To get him into a steelix you have to give him a metal coat and trade him..so keep him if you want to. No the gyms don't get that much harder. I mean they do but not by alot. Yes there is more you can go over to the kanto region and beat 8 other gyms. The rarest Pokemon in your game would be the legendary dogs. By the time you beat the game your quilava will evolve and probably be lv 60 something.
