cheating-is-good answered:

Well, to tell you the truth, there is no best Pokemon party, or best Pokemon type that anyone can have. All parties will have weaknesses, and all Pokemon types have several weaknesses, they all balance each other. The key to building a strong and powerful Pokemon team is build a team with Pokemon that you like, are going to train till they are very strong, and can cancel out each other's weakness. It also depends on what moves your Pokemon know, and what moves you are going to teach them in the future. One move can change an entire battle, and all of your Pokemon need to have a variety of different moves, and not have any of the same moves. You can find out the rest on your own.

Hope this helps.

I don't know about any "Best team" but the team I used was pichu, typhlosion, golem, pidgeot, herracross, and gyarados. That team won me every gym and league battle and the battle with red. Trust me even tho pichu "sucks" it's pretty good if you get the gameshark starter pichu. It's stats make it higher than most regular lv. 5 pokemons.

Guest answered:

You need a variety of pokemon with good type presets and natural status qualities to better their chances of winning a battle.

1.A strong attaker is neccessary for any battle and Herracross has a 4X weakness to flyers, but can counter with endure and reversal, which should deal considerable dammage do to his high attack power and his fighting type alignment matchup, which increases overall damage done with reversal by 50%.

2.Faster Pokemon can deal out ko damage before sustaining any damage themselves if set with excellent move combos, like Aerodactyl,if he has moves like Ancientpower or Earthquake. Pokemon with great speed but not heavy attacks may require moves such as toxin, protect and fly altogether to draw more HP out of enemies without suffering heavy damage themselves. Crobat is beautifully set for this with the extra aid of confuseray to limit the ammount of attaks that can seep through the other movesets.

3.When you have a powerful defensive pokemon like Umbreon, very few attacks can even leave a scratch on'em. The problem is finding suitable moves that compliment the limited firepower that is compinsated for high defenses. Defensecurl and Rollout to follow is a good preset for Golem, as Defensecurl magnifies rollout's power by triple the initial strength. Umbreon may require moves such as hyperbeam for direct damage since defense is so high, despite the turn missed. Toxic, protect, or rest to prolong the battle and perpetuate increasing damage overtime has a chance of working, given the amount of patience needed until the N.M.E is down.

4.Type alignments are crucial in battles as they determine what movesets will work effectively and what will deal the most dammage against you. Gyrados is powerful in natural attacks such as hyperbeam, while special attacks are minimal. Dragon and water technics are limited in strength. Another thing about Gyrados is the horrible damage taken from electric attacks, thunder can max out with critical hits at 960 damage, that is over 3X his maximum health! Mantine is the solution for this problem, bearing 5 star special defense to compensate for Gyrados's weak defenses, but with limited regular defenses.

Hope that helped. Love to type more, but i need to save more for a future blog and if i use up all i got here... oh boy.

snorelax for toatle defence
Tyflosion for power
Garadoes for power
and actully that was about the only pokemon I needed to beat the it was simple with Snorelaxe's defence you can't be beat even if you use eruption on him. Tyflotion has eruption witch is so good you could wipe out almost any two in one shot. Garadoes has two of the best type moves he has hydro pump and hyper beam (both 150 damage and 90 acurrusy) and get them to level 100 and you will have a unbeatabley tough trio

Ok, so this is the ultimate lineup=

Tyranitar, opening beast. High defense and devistation all over :
Rock Slide, Rollout, Crunch, Earthquake

Ferligatr, beginning Pokemon rule, hands down:
Ice beam, surf, hydro pump, cross chop

Magnium, again beginning Pokemon RULE:
Solar beam, sludge bomb, thrash, giga drain

Mewtwo, can learn anything, not to mention racked stats:
Psychic, Shadowball, Hidden Power, Hyper Beam

Typhlosion, need I say more about the begginas?
Sacred Fire, Flamethrower, Iron Tail, Crunch

Dragonite, like Tyranitar, racked stats and rape to the max:
Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Outrage, Aeroblast

Now the moves that they don't learn regularly THEY CAN LEARN through BREEDING!!
Ho oh is the only Pokemon that knows sacred fire, as is Lugia with Aeroblast. Both moves pwn and should be used in controlled breathing!! Ya digg?

Guest answered:

The team I use is Drapion, Aggron, Torterra, Gliscor, Swampert, Tyranitar.
Drapions moves are:
Toxic spikes
Poison jab
Venoshock
Dig.
Item: focus band

Swamperts moves:
Hydro cannon
Muddy water
Hammer arm
Endeavor
Item: focus sash

Aggrons moves:
Heavy slam
Dragon tail
Thunder
Earthquake
Item: muscle band

Tyranitars moves:
Thrash
Stone edge
Focus blast
Fire blast
Item: metronome

Gliscors moves:
Acrobatics
Brick break
You-turn
Guillotine
Item:flying gem

Torterras moves:
Leech seed
Giga drain
Frenzy plant
Earthquake
Items:leftovers

The strategy for this team is to send out Drapion first and make him use toxic spikes. Then have him use poison jab and hopefully he will poison the enemy. If he doesnt it's ok but Drapions only use right now will be the toxic spikes. After he dies bring out tyranitar and hopefully yours will have the sandstream ability. So once his sand storm kicks up just start using what ever move of his will be super effective against the other pokemon. Once he dies send out aggron and if you havent killed his first Pokemon or if he/she hasnt switched out use dragon tail to make him switch. Then just wear him down with dragon tail till all of his Pokemon are poisoned. After there all poisoned and aggron dies bring out torterra and use leech seed. After that his/her Pokemon should be taking damage (hopefully) from the sandstorm and poison along with leech seed every turn. Then if torterras health goes down use giga drain and such till torterra dies. (bye the way he should recieve health from leftovers and leech seed which is a plus side to this strategy). If your opponent is still not defeated then you choose what ever Pokemon would be effective against his/hers that is out on the field. Gliscor is good because of acrobatics. You can basicly one shot anyone because once you use that move flying gem will take effect and will become used and disapear. Which strengthens acrobatics plus acrobatics damage doubles if there is no item so it will seem like he is holding no item. Swampert is good because his stats are usualy good if you EV train him/her. Plus muddy water helps decrease accuracy so you wont get hit as much. My teams stats are the best for each one of them so there really good. This strategy has not failed me so far, but this team would be in trouble since there mostly all ground types.

My G/S/C team has wiped the Battle Town countless times and usually goes undefeated in friendly player matches. Behold--My Generation I and II destroyers

1.) Mewtwo: Recover, Psychic, Thunder, Ice Beam
Item: Bright Powder / Twisted Spoon
Yes, Red Version's beautiful genetic freak has KILLER stats and learns almost every move. Mirror Coat is a potential issue, but if it can't hit twice, (I.E. Electrode) it aint worth worring.

2.) Zapdos: Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, Protect, Drill Peck. Item: Scope Lens
This magnificent bird only hates rock types. Sub out protect for steel wing, and he's fierce. Not to mention his critical ratio is higher than most.

3.) Articuno: Ice Beam, Hypnosis, Swagger, and Double Team. I will admit, mine boasts more... Mind Reader and Horn Drill for the latter two Smile (PKstadium2 allows this?) Item: Focus Band
This Red Version caper, is subject to rock, fire, and electric, but lets be honest, with a SUPER special defense, it's not going to matter much besides rock.

4.) Tyranitar: Crunch, Rockslide, Surf, Earthquake. You can sub surf of earthquake for TOXIC or Thunderbolt. Item: Duh? Quickclaw
This bad mamajama is a BEAST. Only TWO Pokemon can make him shiver, (A thick club pawning Marowak and a Cross Crop critical Machamp.) Use him well, and he'll slay anything without much effort.

5.) Umbreon. The great annoyer destroyer. Give this tiger as many vitamins as possible, and suit em' up with Confuse Ray, Feint Attack, Rest, Toxic. Item: Leftovers.
This defensive tank needs no exclamation. Confuse. Poison, Never-miss STAB attack, then REST to erase stats an damage. Heck yeah.

6.) Lastly, Kingdra. Ice Beam, Surf, Agility, and if your really daring, smokescreen. I imagine you could sub the last one for another stat changer if you like. Item: Mystic Water (for the .5 damage multiplier to an already amazingly high STAB attack.) This Pokemon is the ONLY one that I know in the first two generations that is a dual type with only ONE weakness (dragon), an has ALL great stats that can be tough to overcome.

I hope this helps any battlers looking for a balanced team. I beat all the PKS2 tourneys at 50-55 lvls and DOMINATED the 100Lvls with them.

My party for Pokemon Crytal was Espeon, Umbreon, Jolteon, Arcanine, Lapras and Shuckle. Smile
Espeon pwns, Umbreon's a wall (and pwns), Jolteon is one of the best electric types in Crystal, Arcanine IS the best fire type, Lapras pwns, and Shuckle is another wall (who is quite useful for when I'm healing my party, and when he knows earthquake, can kill all the electric types that the rest of my party can't). I used this team to beat the elite 4 all on lvl40: Lugia, Typhlosion, Alakazam, Dewgong, Ampharos, Golem.

Then I used this team to beat red when all only on lvl 55: Lugia, Tyranitar, Dragonite, Dewgong, Typhlosion, Ampharos.

Would have preferred to have a Lapras instead of Dewgong but didnt want to wait til Friday.

Seeing as you are talking the old GSC games, a lot of these suggestions are bs, but a seriously good team would be Lapras, Espeon (needs Bite or Shadow Ball before you evolve it from Eevee by the way), Dragonite, Tryanitar, Ho-Oh (needs Thunder), and Machamp (with Earthquake)

To get a good team in gold you have to choose Pokemon that you lik and going to train until it meets you're satifaction. To start a good party Pokemon you must first choose your favourite: totodile, chikorita or cyndaquil. When you hav train it to a maximum level start catchin some Pokemon you lik. IDEAS:(1) First train a Pokemon who's defense iz high lik umbreon, golem or tyranitar. I prefer umbreon because of it's dark/normal type which raises it's defense 3x more than a golem. It has an incredibly high defense wall which will tak time 2 mak it faint. Try and get some moves that will mak the battle prolong: rest, protect or moonlight ar some of the best moves for umbreon.(2) Get a Pokemon with a high speed stat. Golbat, scyther, and hitmonchan ar good examples. Golbat is realy fast with very effective attacts. If you want 2 mak a fast Pokemon strong, get it good moves. Golbat: confuseray- to prolong the battle and to mak the opponent lose some attacks hits while damagin itself. Swift- an attack that never misses( mak the user of "swift" hold a pink bow to increas the power by 5) crunch- it may lower the foes defence while cause major attack hit. The last move is your choice, but an "idea" is a move that will annoy the opponent 4 example rest or roost. (3) A strong attacker is need. Heracross will solve your problem. He has a major preference for fightin moves and his 4x attack power which is more than any fightin Pokemon exept machamp whose attack power is 2x stronger than heracross but he has a 4x weakness against flyin pokemon. Heracross has a lot of good fightin type moves too. Plz don't choose gyarados as your fighting Pokemon because he has 4x weakness to electrical attacks. Build your attacker with high attack moves such as submission, counter or cross cut. Get some protect moves too. (4) Well this 1 is yur starter, do watever you want 8 it, but alwayz keep his levels higher than any other ov you're pokemons. It wil mak them feel important. Well thats about all the Pokemon you need. The other 2 is yur choice. NOW MY TEAM IS THIS: Umbreon(DF) lv78: physic, rest, detect, faint attack. Croconaw(STR) lv90: icepunch, ice beam, hydropump, crunch. Arcanine(ATK) lv79: flamethrower, flame blast, crunch, smokescreen. Togetic(my choice) lv 76: wing attack, metronome, lovely kiss, blizzard. Magneton(SPD) Lv80: thunderwave, thunder, lock on, zap cannon. Magneton iz not that fast but by using mi strategy I use tunderwave which makes me attack first. Thunderwave reduces foes speed by 5. Butterfree(my choice) lv 92: silverwind, solarbeam, sunnyday, physic. Really nice team isn't it

Guest answered:

Since this is gold, which most people forget, and since the use of legendaries is generally frowned upon and not allowed in tournaments.

Dragonite:amazing stats overall, and with the variety of moves it can learn you can pack-a-punch to almost all types and you will almost always have that advantage if your opponent doesn't know how to protect it's Pokemon against you.

Houndoom:a slightly unusual set-up I have for this that will need some explainitions.
His stats are average, except for his attack which is slightly above average, but the sunny-day/solar beam(no charge with sunny-day) can suprise the Pokemon with type-advantage over houndoom with super effectiveness, also the sunny-day gives you a nice boost with your fire type attacks and reduce the power of some other types.

Forretress:The only weakness your tank has is fire x4, but with it's super pshysical defence and the 8 x1/2 types and x0 for poison it is extremely hard to win with brute force.

Marowak:This Pokemon may have low stats overall but 'can' with the right tools become even weaker, and what I mean by that is;
With it's low base power it has decent other stats, but with thick club item the attack power is doubled. Buffing the attack beyond more than once will cause the game reduce it's attack during battle. It can achieve max attack, but I warn you, a skilled trainer uses swagger on you and your marowak becomes useless, so watch out for that.

Ampharos:Amazing sp.att, along with decent def and above average hp ampharos will be a strong ally, that will survive the first attack(except one-hit k.o moves)since it has poor speed. Once you endured that move, you can go all out and destroy your opponent.

Alakazam: massive sp.att and high speed, allowing you to strike and destroy most Pokemon before they can attack you (except quick attack and such)
Note that if you don't kill them, the lack of hp and defence will most likely be his downfall, most attacks can put you down as much as you can them with psychic.

(if you can't trade kadabra, go for espeon if you need a similar sp.att or hypno if you want sp.def)

Why I didn't go for tyranitar, rhydon, arcanine, charizard and other extremely powerful Pokemon.
The reason is simple;
You trade a little bit power for type advantage, which gives you more power and better defences.

Houndoom for example has about equal attack strenght compared arcanine/charizard/typholosion but gives you protection against psy, ghost, dark and also let's you absolutely molest water, ground, rock type Pokemon with that chargeless solar beam. Those 3 types have a 2x multiplier on you, but with solar beam you also on them. Effectively cancelling out all type advantages.(most fire types can do this combo but you won't cancel out all type advantages.

Tyranitar has too many weaknesses and can't cancel them out either with unusual attacks like seen on houndoom. It's stats are absolutely amazing, I won't deny that, but that won't save you from a let's say cross chop 100 dmg x4.and x6 if stab

Best team
POliwrath- with hypnosis, focus punch combo hydro pump and earthquake to hit heavy
Ampharos- rain dance and thunder combo with iron tail for some versatility as well as thunderbolt when thunder's pp is low
Leafeon- swords dance and baton pass with synthesis to last long and stack the attack with MULTIPLE swords dances. Also solar beam
Metagross- to be baton passed in, with meteor mash, earthquake for weakness to fire xscissor for psychic weakness and the move psychic for some special attack. Stacked physical attack because of leafeons baton pass.
Shedninja- holds focus stacche for one free turn, use toxic. Bide rest of time with protect then endure. Use over and over. If enemy cannot affect it (it has wonder guard ability so only super effective moves hit) use xscissor with toxic. So move set is toxic, endure, protect, x scissor.
Hydreigon- strong mixed attacking tank with outrage, flamethrower, crunch, and draco meteor.

Wobbuffet w/leftovers: Destiny Bond, Counter, Mirror Coat, Safeguard

Celebi w/ brightpowder (use first): Double Team, Baton Pass, Safeguard, Recover

The team hits every Pokemon in GSC for at least x1 damage, a good variety of buffers, walls and physical/special tanks and sweepers. Hope that helps.

My best team was

2.Blastoise (traded from red version)
3.Tyranitar
4.Alakazam
5.Snorlax
6.Dragonite
And with the stats and move set I used I went undefeated on wifi battles for months. Thats preference mainly however, I do recommend the snorlax to have amnesia, body slam, curse, and earthquake because that move set is virtually unstoppable if used right. I try not to use legendaries (Ho-oh, Lugia etc) as it's kinda stupid and really easy. So I think Typhlosion, Ampharos, Blissey, Lapras, probably Umbreon as well as Tyranitar.

Blissey is a beastly special wall, and has massive hp and can annoy with softboiled. Having toxic and/or thunder wave is especially good with blissey.

With these Pokemon you cover most of the types and they can learn good moves as well.

The "Best" team really depends on the game. For starters, you are going to want Pokemon that back each other up. For example, if you use Typhlosion, you might want to use a grass type like Bellessom to block it's weakness' to rock, ground, and water. Also, you need to know what challenges are in the game. For example, in Pokemon gold and silver, Lapras is a very good Pokemon to beat Lancewho has 3 dragonites and aeordactyl who are all weak to ice. You also want walls and sweepers. If your team is Primeape, Raichu, Starmie, Xatu, Houndoom, and Yanmenga, your team won't want survive a hit. You want defensive Pokemon on your team too! Good defensive Pokemon are Steelix, Tentacruel, Feerothorn, the Regis, and Altaria. But the thing is, there is no such thing as the best Pokemon team. There are just good Pokemon teams. I hope this helps you make your team.

BUT SOD SPENDING DAYS RE BREEDING SOMETHING JUST GET MOVES ON A Pokemon ON A GAME YOU'VE PROB BEAT 100S OF TIMES OR RISKING PERMANENTLY DAMAGING YOUR PC STORAGE AND POKEDEX ON EVERY FILE THEREAFTER (I've SEEN IT HAPPEN TO A FRIEND THROUGH FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO GLITCH CELEBI AND IT BEING SLIGHTLY WRONG STEPS NOT EVEN PURPOSELY EITHER) , AND ALSO HALF THE FAQ'S HAVE GOT THE METHOD SLIGHTLY WRONG WHICH GIVES YOU ONE THAT YOU can't GET OUT OF THE DAYCARE CAUSE it's LEVEL JUMPS TO 100 AND IT COSTS MORE MONEY HEN THE SLOWPOKETAIL/BIKE IN R/B IF YOU GET WHAT I'm SAYING !! I think my team is pretty solid because I beat many people without even high-leveled Pokemon (compared to what you should have to battle the elite four, etc). These are the teams I used to beat the Elite Four and Red (found this in my Hall of Fame user screen on the Pokemon internal computer).

Elite Four (not going to lie I did this on a whim--you'll see, I didn't even really like these Pokemon and I was only using pidgey to fly places at the time because I did have better options than the pidgey):
-TYPHLOSION lv. 62
-DRAGONAIR lv. 39
-AMPHAROS lv. 35
-LAPRAS lv. 34
-Lugia lv.47
-PIDGEY lv. 13

Elite Four (Second Time--also on a whim, I think I just hatched eevee):
-TYPHLOSION lv. 80
-DRAGONITE lv. 59
-KADABRA lv. 53
-AMPHAROS lv. 49
-LAPRAS lv. 46
-EEVEE lv. 1

I'm not sure when I beat Red or exactly which Pokemon and which levels I used to beat Red, but I'll give you my current team:
