How to Use and Where to Find Infernal Iron in Baldur's Gate 3

In Baldur's Gate 3, you need to plunder Infernal Iron to help Karlach, the Tiefling Barbarian in your party who seeks revenge on the man who sold her to an Archdevil when she was young. Karlach requires this rare metal in the companion quest, The Hellion Heart to repair the engine in her heart. This Where to Find and How to Use Infernal Iron in Baldur's Gate 3 will tell you everything you need to know.

How to Use Infernal Iron

You need to gather Infernal Iron for The Hellion Heart companion quest which requires it to repair the infernal engine that is inside Karlach. If you visit the Tiefling smith, Dammon, located in the centre of the Emerald Grove Settlement, he will explain that unless the infernal engine that is inside Karlach is repaired with Infernal Iron it will overheat and go into overdrive, which will kill her.

In order to begin the quest to save Karlach you need to find a piece of Infernal Iron and bring it to Dammon. He will then use it to partially repair Karlach and tell you to meet him in Baldur's Gate later in the story. When you do meet him again during Act 2 at the Last Light Inn with the other Tieflings he will accept another piece of Infernal Iron to repair Karlach fully.

It is important to keep in mind that if you save the Emerald Grove and you haven't spoken to Dammon with Karlach and started the quest to find the Infernal Iron, Dammon will leave for Baldur's Gate. On the opposite side, after you raid the grove, you won't be able to repair Karlach with Infernal Iron or talk to Dammon.

Where to Find Infernal Iron

The Baldur's Gate 3 Infernal Iron item is a rare metal that you will occasionally find in chests and treasure troves across the world. This dented piece of black metal has a red shine to it, no matter the lighting. Faint screams echo through your mind whenever you touch it. Listed below are some locations where you are guaranteed to find it.

  • Blighted Village:

This will likely be the first Infernal Iron you acquire and it can be found inside the barn (eastern side of the village) where we found the forge and started the sidequest 'Finish the Masterwork Weapon'. In the northeastern corner are some chests (one on top and the other at the bottom of the ladder). Open them up to find the iron.

  • Goblin Camp

In the Shattered Sanctum of the Goblin Camp, you will find a piece of Infernal Iron in Dror Ragzlin's treasure room after defeating him.

  • Goblin Camp:

In the room north of Ragzlin's location, which can be accessed by going up the stairs and behind his 'throne', you can find a piece of Infernal Iron inside a chest. You will need his key to open it, or you can opt to lockpick it.

  • Grymforge:

when you talk to Kith (the Stonemason west and behind the waypoint) he will ask you about the ruins and what you think of them. If you pass all 3 checks correctly he'll give you a free Infernal Iron.

  • The Mason's Guild:

In the main courtyard of the Mason's Guild to the south-west of the Last Light in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. You can find a piece of Infernal Iron on a workbench. This is located just north of the Moonrise Towers. Exact coordinates are X:-106, Y:19.

  • Yurgir:

If you defeat this demon in the east wing of the Gauntlet of Shar, he will drop some Infernal Metal.

  • Flymm's Cargo:

Go into the warehouse in Act 3 and find the basement hatch. As you move forward, you will find some Infernal Iron on the ground.

  • Steel Watchers:

You can loot Infernal Iron and Enriched Infernal Iron from many of the big Steel Watcher robots that patrol the streets. If you destroy the Steel Watch Foundry every Steel Watcher in the game will be defeated, making it possible for you to search them for any Infernal Iron they possess.

How to Get the Helldusk Armour with Infernal Alloy

Infernal Alloy can be purchased from Stonemason Kith in the Grymforge and this version of the metal has a special function. If you bring this precious metal to Dammon when he is at the Last Light Inn in Act 2, he will forge you the Flawed Helldusk Armour set, which deals fire damage to enemies that hit you. The proper Helldusk Armour can be acquired later in the game as a Legendary item and is unrelated to the Infernal Alloy version.
