Top 10 Aliens In Video Games

Playing a well-designed, sci-fi game where the aliens are done right is everyones bread and butter in the gaming community. What we love most about the presence of aliens is how they can seem so contrary to us humans and yet so alike after we learn so much about them. They can be an incredibly challenging boss fight or the one character in our lives that leads us to question our own existence. We may or may not be alone in this universe, but we do have a list of the alien characters in gaming history that have made an impact on sci-fi gamers throughout the years. Here’s the top 10 aliens in video games list.

1. Covenant (Halo Series)

We wouldn’t have the Master Chief without these religious nuts. The Covenant are one of the main antagonists in The Halo series. The Covenant Empire is a combination of over eight alien races that worship the Halo Array and another alien race known as the Forerunners. This theocratic race made it to the list because they are the catalyst of so many issues Master Chief and the UNSC had to deal with. They may not be the smartest group of enslaving, chaos-bringing aliens, but they have made many players work for their achievements since 2001.

2. Lavos (Chrono Trigger)

Most JRPG fans recognize this monstrosity from a mile away. Lavos is the vicious, final boss in the game Chrono Trigger. Lavos is an alien parasite with no specified gender. It landed in 65,000,000 B.C. and then slept for years upon years until he felt like waking up around 1999 A.D. and putting the world in an apocalyptic/dystopian state. It has three different forms and those who have gone head-to-shell with it know that you must fight it more than once. Many fans who love Chrono Trigger will openly express their rage for this creature.

3. Garrus (Mass Effect)

Garrus is everyone’s favorite companion in the Mass Effect series. Whether you’re more Paragon or Renegade, Garrus is a pretty loyal alien. In fact, he’s a turian with a troubled past, but cares very much for Shepard. Garrus may appear calm on the outside, but he’s an absolutely killing machine later. If you’ve played the series, you know that Garrus holds grudges as quickly as he falls in love. The only way you’ll really lose this turian’s loyalty is if you do him wrong purposefully.

4. Abe (Oddworld)

There’s nothing like living out the saga of a hero that saves the entire world as a lowly, weak Mudokon. In the game Oddworld, Abe, aka Stich Lips, is trying to find a way to stop his people from getting produced and eaten as canned meat by the race of aliens that have enslaved them. Abe fights to rescue them while traversing through various traps and weapons with the other Mudokon’s he’s rescued. Abe has magical abilities, such as mind control. He is very sweet, meek, and poorly coordinated. Fun fact: Abe is named after Abraham from the Bible.

5. The Zerg and Protoss In StarCraft

Starcraft fans know of the intensity of this game. The rising powers of various races come to a clash in the first and second game. The aliens the terrans, who are known as the humans, have to deal with initially are the Zerg and the Protoss. The Zerg were the creatures that specialized in mutations while communicating as a hive-mind. The Protoss are a strong and powerful alien race with great psionic power and are the most technologically advanced. The terrans dealt with the Zerg first then had a conflict of interest with the Protoss. These two were the start of every military sci-fi fan’s greatest and most intrinsic adventure.

6. Metroid (Metroid)

Since it’s the name of the game, the Metroid made it to the top 10 aliens in video games because they are the most resilient race of aliens. Samus, the main character of the game, has gone through hell and back but the Metroid never seem to leave her alone. These creatures were created by the Chozo, the alien bird-people who adopted Samus. The Chozo only created the Metroid to keep the X Parasites at bay, but thanks to the instigation of Space Pirates and their experimentations, the Metroids mutated into something much more threatening. From then on, it seemed there was no end to their existence.

7. The Alien Invasion In The XCOM Series

If you’ve ever played any of the games in this series, then you know the title “XCOM” refers to the player becoming a part of the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit. InXCOM: Enemy Unknown andXCOM 2the player is the commander of this global fighting force. The aliens that invade Earth are the embodiment of what most us predict aliens will do; they’ll invade us, then enslave us or destroy us, which is why we feel it’s necessary to know how to fight back. Playing XCOM is good practice and can become really addicting really quick.

8. Alien Domination in The Half-Life Series

Alien invasion will never get old, but Valve Corporation wanted to explore what the world would be like if the aliens were too close to conquering Earth forever. Players see the story of the Half-Life series through the eyes of protagonist Gordon Freeman. The aliens that have won over the Earth are known as the Combine who are so technologically advanced that they are able to travel through multiple dimensions. It’s a hobby of theirs to travel to different worlds, dominate them, and force the survivors of the world to join their empire.

9. The Giygas In Earthbound

The presence of Giygas brought about a terrifying and dark reality for the characters in Earthbound. Giygas is an alien with psychokinetic powers and although he had malicious intentions for the end of the world, his love for another character, Maria, causes him to give up in Earthbound Beginnings. He returned in Earthbound where he rules the world in the future and only four kids known as “The Chosen Four” can stop him.

10. The Saga Of Alien Games

Last, but certainly not least in our top 10 list of aliens in video games are the Aliens series. We all have heard of the Alien vs. Predator movies and there have been several adaptations through video games. The most recently released game was Alien: Colonial Marines is 2013. These beings are incredibly fast, relentless, and cunning. They can cloak themselves and spit out acid, but that is only a few of their many abilities. These aliens have certainly earned their place on the list of top 10 aliens in video games because they’re scary enough in theaters.
