06. Auto Club Revolution

Oh sure, your list has games for D&D fans, games for Anime fans, games for Anime D&D fans, games for Starship Troopers (well sort of) and even games for weekend warriors - but what about auto racing, huh?! Where is THAT in your wonderful list of free-to-play MMOs, huh Mister Man?!

Well that would be the game sliding in at Number 6 -- Auto Club Racing -- which I want to point out to you is not just some auto-themed combat sim MMO created by two guys in their parent's garage! It is in fact a free-to-play 3D online racing game AND car social community that was created and engineered in collaboration with the auto industry no less!

ACR features officially licensed and properly converted cars from over fifty real-world car makers -- and it also delivers what is arguably a console game quality racing experience in its free-to-play package that also happens to support its own social platform so you can really get to know the people you are playing with (and hopefully beating). So there!

No, seriously, I cannot downplay the social network side because it is really the first part of the game you see -- the reason being that the game is structured (and the social networking is in your face) via its web-based front end. The actual racing though takes place via the downloaded client program (that makes total sense if you think about it, because how could you manage console quality racing via a web app? The obvious answer is you cannot).

If this was not what you had in mind when the subject of free-to-play MMOs came up, well then shame on you for thinking that they all involved dragons, wizards, or laser guns. Just saying.

Considering how much I enjoy the Forza series and Need for Speed on console, having a computer-based MMO available to do racing in style when I am forced away from the Big Comfie Couch to cover events like E3 gives me a warm feeling in the cochleas of my heart.

No, not in the cochleas of my heart, lower, where man feelings come from! Because racing fast is surely a manly thing (please don't tell Danica Patrick I said that, I still have not fully recovered from the beating she gave me when I said her car looked “cute”).

Seriously though, the web front-end allows players to check in with their mates and their garage from pretty much anywhere (like work) while the backend client -- which is built using the world class Eutechnyx-owned racing engine -- lets you roll out your stable of cars and kick some serious timer (that sounds so wrong...) when you feel the need to race.

You don't have to be a Petrol Head to love this game, but if you like watching Top Gear and the smell of high-test petrol reminds you of romance, this is the MMO for you.
