T.W.I.T. Coins
Trowzer has paywalls separating sections of the world and the only way that you can pass them is to have enough T.W.I.T. Coins. In each of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair's 40 levels there are 5 coins you can find. You don't need to find all the coins in a level, just enough to satisfy the paywall.
Keep Yooka and Laylee Together
At the start of each level Yooka and Laylee will be together but whenever Yooka takes a hit Laylee will get spooked and fly away. When this happens you will have a certain amount of time where you are able to catch her. If you manage to catch her in the alloted time Laylee will rejoin you as if nothing happened and you will be able to take another hit thereafter. The easiest way to catch Laylee is by paying attention to her flight arc, if you are unable to catch her in time you will have to keep an eye out for the bells that you can touch to call her back.
Jumping Using Yooka's Roll
One of the most useful moves that you have available to you is Yooka's roll. Not only does it cover a lot of ground and makes a great offense it is also invaluable when you need to peform a tricky jump. Yooka not only has the ability to roll off a platform and stay airborne for the entire duration of the roll, he is also able to jump at any point during the roll. To get the maximum amount of distance out of a roll you simply walk to the edge of the platform you are on and roll, then at the end of the roll animation jump.
Ghost Quills
To be able to unlock the second versions of some levels will require Quills. Ghost Quills act as a challenge to earn more Quills in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. There are 5 different coloured Quills who each behave in different ways. Ghost Quills can sometimes be found inside of crates with a Quill symbol on them, or throughout different levels. Other than Fee-Dee, every Ghost Quill will award you with a T.W.I.T Coin or a Quillion. Just playing through the game normally should give you enough Quills anyway. Quills can also be collected repeatedly during the levels.
Tonics
There are 62 Tonics to find in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and each will allow you to modify your gaming experience by either making it easier or harder or by applying visual changes to the game. Tonics are only found in the Overwild, either in the wild or by solving clues given to you by swinging signs. Once you find a Tonic you need to purchase it from the Tonics menu using Quills the in-game currency. You may want to consider equipping the following set of Tonics which will give you a multiplier of 2.5 (the multiplier is set to x1.0 by default).
• Less Checkmates - Quill Bonus 1.
• Googly Eyes - Quill Bonus 0.5.
• Quill Magnet
Although no Bonus is awarded it makes getting all the Quills in a chapter considerably faster.
• Quillspolsion - Enemies die in an explosion of Quills, increasing the total amount.
Bee Team Guards
In Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair one of the collectible types is Bee Team Guards. You will be able to rescue 40 of these bees in the levels themselves, the other 8 can be found on the levels that have secret exits somewhere in them which are not easy to find. If you keep your eyes peeled you will be able to identify the levels with the secret exits as the imprisoned bee will be visible on the overworld. It is important that you collect these bees as they act as shields when you tackle the Impossible Lair. Check out our Bee Team Guards Locations guide to find out exactly where you can find them.
Practice
Although doable without the full roster of 48 bees, getting through the Lair is not easy. Therefore be prepared to find yourself having to do a fair amount of practice to gain the skills required to overcome certain challenges.
Skip Sections
If you find yourself repeatedly dying in a particular section of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair you will discover that the checkmate you spawn at will eventually turn gold. When this happens you will be give the option to skip whatever is giving you difficulties and move forward.
