You will only be able to earn medals while playing on the 'Classic' difficulty setting where in each level you will be given three tasks to perform to earn a medal. It is not necessary to earn all these medals at once as they can be earned independently per run. Tasks can vary from taking no damage, earning a rank, to finishing the level without a wingman.
You earn XP by playing missions or feeding your dragon. The more XP your dragon gets the stronger it will become and eventually when you reach a certain point you will be able to evolve it using special loot. Experience also allows you to level up and unlock more dragons to purchase.
Although in the game they have different names the dragons belong to one of four groups: Fire, Electricity, Wind, and Shadow Dragons. You begin with a fire dragon and more will become unlocked as you progress through the game.
You earn skills for your dragon by leveling it up to the max or feeding it an item. These items are earned from enemy drops, or can be purchased from the shop using credits or jewels. The element type is irrevalent as each dragon can equip any skill.
It is important that you pay attention to your consistently changing surroundings so you are able to swoop away and avoid severe damage to your dragon from things such as hanging rocks and lava streams.
