If you are here you must be wondering how to achieve a certain Private Action, or perhaps how it affects an ending to the game. This is the FAQ to read. Please note before we go any further that Private Actions in this game are quite different then they have been in past Star Ocean titles. Furthermore, this guide is solely composed on my own experience with the game and the information gathered by other users from different online communities. That being said, this guide may contain some errors. As time goes on and more information is discovered, this guide will be updated to ammend those errors. So please, before you throw your controller against the wall because you didnt get to see Meracle stradling Edge, calm down, take a deep breath, and make sure you did everything correctly. What are private actions? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alright, so what exactly are Private Actions (from here out known as PAs)? If you are new to this series, shame on you. Go back and play the first three (or 4 depending on counting Star Ocean: BB). Okay, done that? Good. Fans of the series will know very well that Private Actions are......well.... actions that are private. They usually take place after certain conditions are filled, certain items are in your inventory, certain characters are in your party, and a certain amount of time has passed in the game. All your characters had affinity points (or relationship poitns) with one another and depending on if you had enough, certain scenes may play that tells more about the backstory of a certain character, characters may fall in love, some are just for comedic value, and in the past few games, private actions could alter the ending you saw after beating the game. Got all that? Sounds pretty cool right? Read on and weap. Star Ocean 4 throws all of that out the window. Well, most of it at least. See, in past Star Oceans there were many different path or options to choose throughout the game, and in doing so, certain characters may not join your party, thus eliminating the ability to see some PA's. Some options also allowed the main character to alter their ending and end up staying/living/ killing/or falling in love with a certain character. Not in Star Ocean 4. In this game, PAs are set, as you have the same party members every time (with the exception of your second playthrough on but it changes nothing). Not only that, in this version, no matter what PAs you see, the main character will always end up with the same person every time. I wont say but I am sure you are smarter than you look, take a wild guess. So what is the point you ask? Well for one, having a great amount of affinity with each character nets you an "additional scene" at the end of the game earning you a small amount of gamerscore (10 points per character). Not only that, there are 2 "additonal hidden" scenes that are not normally unlocked by default that you can earn by doing certain actions throughout the game (explained in more detail in following sections). Finally, some of the PAs are just downright hilarious to see, mostly involving Lymle or Meracle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. What you need to know ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There are a few things to be aware of about Private Actions: 1) Some are permanently missable 2) Some are only unlocked by choosing "specific" options in earlier PAs 3) To get one of the "additional ending" scenes, you must follow a strict path. 4) Most of the PAs occur on the long flights inbetween your story destinations so do not feel that you will automatically miss them. 5) That being said, some of them DO NOT occur on the ship flights. Don't worry I will tell you where they are. 6) You can skip a "legs" of PAs if you do not want to see any or gain/lose any affinity with anyone else or just move on to the next leg of PAs. In most cases, you will advance "one leg" for every PA you see. There are a few however that will not advance the "leg" thus allowing you to see 2 or more in the same time. 7) You can skip all PAs if you want on the flights between destinations by going to Edge's room and choosing "Rest Until Arrival" on his bed. --Affinity Points-- Affinity Points are the "bond" we will call it Edge has with a certain character and vice-versa. In most cases PAs will either raise or lower your affinity points with said character. Some PAs affect multiple crew members and sometimes it only affects one. Sometimes there is no change at all. In order to see each characters "additional ending" Edges affinity for them, and their affinity for Edge must be above a certain mark. Unfortunately, there is no way for me to put an exact # on this mark. However, after 7 speed runs of the game trying out different combinations I have a good guess and will label in the guide where I think you've earned/unlocked their additonal scene. --Raising Affinity-- There are a few ways to raise Affinity Points: 1) Actually trigger the PA between characters. There are only a handful of PAs in the game that actually LOWER affinity so do not feel ashamed to view most of them. 2) Making the right choice during PAs (this is where you can actually lose some big points if you make the wrong choice). 3) Room with the character. To room with a character, after Edge becomes the captain of the ship check the room board listing right outside of Edges room on the corner of the hallway. Here you can pair up certain characters. Please note that until they have a sufficient amount of affinity points for one another, male/female pairings are not possible. Also, affinity rises only as the story goes on, NOT YOUR PLAY TIME. Do not ask me about this. Period. Thank you. 4) Love Potion 256. This is an item you can make via synthesis during the game and when used on a character, EVERYONE ELSE's affinity rises for that character. So if you use it on Edge, everyones affinity for edge rises. Some say it doesnt work for the same sex (guy/guy and girl/girl), however, I have found that it does and until I can find SUBSTANTIAL evidence that it doesnt, I will keep it this way. 5) Aroma of Love. Another item made through synthesis, this can be placed in the 4 bedrooms of the Calnus and causes whoever is rooming together in there to gain more affection for each other as time goes on. More so than if they were just rooming together without it. --Lowering Affinity-- 1) Trigger a negative PA. For example, peeping on Reimi in the shower (but honestly, who wouldnt?) Ahem...moving on. 2) Choose the incorrect or "bad" choice during a PA scene. 3) Pickpocketing. This is a skill that Edge can acquire during the game. While tempting as it may be to pickpocket certain items, if you want to get EVERY characters additional ending in one run through of the game, dont do it. Besides, the items you get through pickpocketing are usually not worth it anyway. However, there is only a 10-15% chance that your affinity will be lowered by one point when you pickpocket. You have been warned. 4) Super Aphrodisiac. Another item made through synthesis. It has the exact opposite effect of Love Potion 256. 5) Ominous Metal. Another synthesis item that has the exact opposite effect then the Aroma of Love. --Private Actions with Welch-- There are a few scenes throughout the game that have Edge and co. sometimes interacting with Welch. These are usually triggered by introducing a new character to Welch or sometimes just for the heck of it. None of these PAs have an affect on affinity for you characters. They are just there for comedy and to listen to Laura Baileys sexy (but sometimes annoying) voice. --Achieving the Additional Scenes-- If the combined affinity points between 2 characters equals a certain amount, then the additional scene for that character will be played. Note that it is different for each character and until I find exact numbers, I do not want to post them (the numbers you see below in my lists are my guesses for affinity increases/decreses. Once again, follow the one playthrough guide below and you should achieve all the additional endings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. List of Private Actions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This section will list each PA as it becomes available and show the corresponding gain or drop in affinity points that the characters receive. Format is as follows ------------- #) Name of PA ------------- Available: When the PA is first available and what requirements are needed to see it. - Disappears: When the PA becomes unavailable. - Reappearing: If you miss it when its first available, this will state when you can trigger it again. - How to Trigger: How to start the PA and whether or not it advances to the next "leg" of available PAs. - Answer to choose: If there is a best choice to make for the PA, it will be listed here. - Affinity Change: How the response above, or just triggering the PA changes affinity. - Affect Future PAs: This will show whether seeing this PA will affect/unlock additional PAs down the line and what answer you should give. - Required for the two hidden endings: This will state whether or not you have to see this PA to unlock "Crowe's Ending" achievement and "Faize's Ending" achivement. THIS DOES NOT STATE WHETHER OR NOT SEEING THIS PA WILL GET YOU THE CHARACTERS ENDING IN QUESTION. This will only state whether or not its required to get one of the two achievements mentioned above. - Comments: Any other miscellaneous info I need to throw out there. --BEFORE LEAVING AEOS-- -------------------------------- 1) The Beautiful Flowers of Aeos -------------------------------- Available: After promoting Edge to captain of the Calnus - Disappears: As soon as you take off from Aeos - Reappearing: No - How to trigger: Run back to the east side of Urd Falls Cave. You should see a purple exclamation point in a patch of flowers. - Answer to choose: "You're really beautiful Reimi." - Affinity Change: Edge: +1 Reimi Reimi: +2 Edge - Affect Future PAs: No - Required for Hidden Endings: No - Comments: If you choose the other 2 options, affinity for both characters goes down by either 1 or 2 points respectively. There should be no reason not to choose the correct one for this PA unless you really don't want to get Reimi's Ending Achievement. Also, after viewing this PA, you can immediately pair Edge and Reimi together if you wish (Good God theyre already getting it on). Note Faize is available to room with Edge even before this PA (WTF?) -------------------------------- --) Welch, meet Faize -------------------------------- Available: Before leaving Aeos - Disappears: After the fifth "leg" of the flight from Aeos to Lemuris - Reappearing: No - How to trigger: Before leaving Aeos, or anytime on the trip from Aeos to Lemuris, go activate the synthesis module in the meeting area of the Calnus - Answer to choose: None - Affinity Change: None - Affect Future PAs: No - Required for Hidden Endings: No - Comments: RAWR! I am not sure what triggers it but I think its a 2nd+ playthrough PA only. Of course it is with Welch so it does not affect anything. Before setting a course for Cardianon, choose to return to Aeos and head back into the base. For one, if you accidently set course for the Cardianon, you've missed it. Two, I cant figure out if JUST seeing this PA affects another one at the very end of the game, or if you have to see this PA AND answer correctly as well. However, it is good to see it so that you can get Faize and Lymle closer as you will need them to be able to room together ASAP. ------------------------------- ------------------------------- -------------------------------- 15) Crowe Kicked Your Butt -------------------------------- Available: On-route from Lemuris to Cardianon, 5th "leg" of flight - Disappears: After the fifth "leg" of the flight - Reappearing: No - How to trigger: Head to the battle simulator room and speak to Reimi. Advances to the sixth "leg." - Answer to choose: None - Affinity Change: Edge: +1 Reimi Reimi: +1 Edge Faize: None Lymle: None - Affect Future PAs: No - Required for Hidden Endings: YES! WARNING! YES! WARNING! YES! WARNING! - Comments: This is one of the PAs that is required to achieve "Crowe's Ending" achievement. Do not miss it or you will be sorry. Such a cookie cutter relationship between the two. This is not a required PA to see the final Reimi PA that gives tons of people trouble on the forums. But to be safe, view it anyway. ------------------------------- ------------------------------- -------------------------------- 16) Cookies! -------------------------------- Available: On-route from Lemuris to Cardianon, 6th "leg" of flight - Disappears: After the 6th "leg" of the flight - Reappearing: No - How to trigger: Head to the recreation room and talk to the party. However, lots of affinity points for Lymle towards Faize which helps later on down the line. See this PA. ------------------------------- ------------------------------- -------------------------------- 17) What is this Contraption? -------------------------------- Available: While exploring the Cardianon Mothership in the Biological Laboratory. - Disappears: After clearing the Cardianon mothership - Reappearing: No - How to trigger: Examine the vending machine on the Cardianon mothership, then examine it again to trigger it. Funeral Bouquet Private Actions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So what are the Funeral Bouquet Private Actions you ask? They are optional PAs (all PAs are optional I guess) but these moreso that help you raise affinity with certain characters. Some you definitely want to do (like Sarah, Meracle, Myuria, and Arumat). But others such as Bacchus, Lymle, and Reimi arent really required due to you already having lots of affinity points with them. However, those of you who are scared and those of you who want to see everything should do them anyway.....I did. Each Funeral Bouquet PA requires one "Funeral Bouquet" item in your inventory. The materials are found all over but most of them you can get in En IIs Sanctuary. To start, you can get a free Funeral Bouquet as well as the recipe from Myurias's friend in Metropolis. She is in the center of the map standing in front of the store entrance somewhat. Talk to her and you will get one Funeral Bouquet for free as well as the recipe to make more. This is required if you want to see Crowe's ending as you will need a funeral bouquet. In short: --SAVE 1 FUNERAL BOUQUET FOR CROWE'S ENDING PA!-- --SAVE 1 FUNERAL BOUQUET FOR CROWE'S ENDING PA!-- --SAVE 1 FUNERAL BOUQUET FOR CROWE'S ENDING PA!-- --SAVE 1 FUNERAL BOUQUET FOR CROWE'S ENDING PA!-- If you wish to see ALL the endings in one playthrough. The Final Reimi PA Conundrum ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ As stated many times earlier in this FAQ, many users were falsely led to believe that in order to achieve Reimi's final PA they had to choose the answer, "Take you to the stars" in one of the earlier PAs in the game by the official BradyGames strategy guide. This is incorrect. Or at least it is in the 7 times Ive played through the game. In order to get the PA, the one fact I know for sure is that you must choose "I would marry you." in that PA instead. Yes, the dialogue is better if you choose the stars option, yes it should have been the correct answer to get the final PA with Reimi, but it isnt. Blame Tri-Ace, or BradyGames, or God, or whatever it is you may worship, this is my experience with it and I am sticking to it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Achieving All Endings in One Go ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alright so you want to get all the endings in one go do you? Well this little handy checklist will help you achieve just that. There are a few notes to be sad before we begin though. 1st, if you miss a PA, do not worry about it, unless it was one of the special ones for Faize or Crowe's endings. In which case, all I can say is I hope you have a save from earlier. 2nd, is the Funeral Bouquet PAs. With the exception of activating Crowe's which is required to see his ending, none of the other Funeral Bouquet PAs are required. However, they give a huge boost of affection points for the matching character and can definitely give you a boost if you wish to activate their ending. 3rd, SAVE ALOT AND IN MULTIPLE SLOTS. YOU HAVE 20, USE THEM! Backups are always good to have in case you mess up. That being said, below you will find a list of the PAs as they are numbered in my guide. Just print this section out or copy and paste it into word and then either: check-off, cross-out, highlight, or do whatever you wanna do to keep track of whether or not you have seen the PA. Note that this list is composed of the PAs I did on my 9th and final runthrough of the game so it should work for you if you follow it to a T. Some of the PAs you may be thinking, wow all that for 1 point. But that one point can make a difference. This guide shows the order you should view the PAs in (reading left to right) So follow that and you should be good. Note after PA 61 I do some FB PAs to help in case I did not have enough points to see certain characters final PAs. You should too just to be safe. If you are REALLY paranoid, then just view every single PA you can and do the Funeral Bouquet PAs as well, then you should have no problem. Special Notes: You can choose 19-B instead of 19-A as well, but to me I like the flow that the PAs take if you do 19-A instead. Also, PA 26 is the ever elusive Reimi PA that determines the final PA with her. Be sure to do it. Also PA 33 is easy to miss and required for Crowe's ending, be sure to do it as well. 37-A is a tough one to hit in time. If for some reason you cannot do it, do not fret, there is another chance, do 37-B instead. A: Duh, what you thought you were going to get something for nothing? No such thing as a free lunch. If you are really worried, be sure to do all the Funeral Bouquet PAs as they help a lot. Q: I didn't get the final Reimi PA (68) and I chose "stars" earlier in the game because Brady's guide told me to and I think they are smarter then you. A: Regardless of your opinion, that is an error in the guide. You need to have chosen "marry" instead. For those of you who did pick the "stars" option and got the final PA. Good for you, I never did. God must like you more. Q: I dont have enough Relationship points to see PA 41-A because I cannot pair up Lymle and Faize, am I screwed? A: Almost. If you still cannot have them share a room by the time you get to 41-A, you need to make lots of Love Potion 256 and feed them to both Lymle and Faize respectively (not Edge).
