I.    Introduction

This guide for Madden NFL 09 on Xbox 360 will give you the order in
which players are drafted when selecting the fantasy draft option at
the start of a franchise game (it might be the same on other
consoles, but I don't know). Indeed, everytime you do a fantasy
draft, the team drafting order is changed so that the same team does
not always pick first or last, but the order in which players are
picked is always the same. That means the Dolphins won't always pick
first, but Bob Sanders will always be the first player picked.

The list goes up to round 25 of the draft, meaning one player per
position plus one backup.

The order below is the default one, if you are not involved (by
simulating the draft after choosing your team and the franchise
options). I'm not entirely sure of the way player involvement
modifies the order, as it does not seem to simply be that the normal
order would be resumed after your pick.

After the draft, the same players are always in the free agent pool,
so it might be a good idea to select your draft picks keeping those
players in mind. There's no point in drafting early a player in a
position for which good free agents are available afterwards! 

I only put the players with an overall rating over 80 in the list,
as the rest is there to fill your roster rather than give you
potential starters.

This is my first guide ever, on Gamefaqs or elsewhere, so I hope I
won't disappoint! I am known on the web as poilbrun, a nickname I use
online since 96. I'm European, Belgian more precisely, but that's
never stopped me from being a big fan of American Football for the
last 20 years. I played Joe Montana Football and the early Madden
Games on the Sega Genesis and have played the game nearly every year!

I'm a big fan of fantasy drafts in Madden and I used Michael
Hansen's fantasy draft and trade guide for Madden 08 to great success
last year, so I thought when I got Madden 09 today that I would give
back to the community and create a fantasy draft guide myself. So,
Michael, if you're reading this, I hope I'll save you some work!

Here is some advice sent to me by Michael Hansen, maker of the
Fantasy Draft Guide for Madden NFL 08:

- I'm still experimenting with this but you can change a 
  linebacker's position to D-Line and they will elevate 
  tremendously. Suggs, Wimbley, Farrior, Lewis, Scott guys like that
  are all 99 DEs.  Spikes in the Free Agents is a 98.
 
- When you sign free agents, you should give them a great salary but
  NO SIGNING BONUS!!! That will mean you can avoid cap penalties when
  you trade.

The next two I copied word for word from my guide and the pertain to
last year:

- The only way to make a good trade for someone who is a premier 
  player, I'll use Champ Bailey as an example, is to add players of
  the same position that either take down the A++ rating to an A, or
  boost one of your own player's ratings.
  To get Champ I had to include Ellis Hobbs. Not only was he a D, but
  he made Champ Bailey's value go down to an A making it easy to 
  include Al Wilson (C+) and someone else for him and draft picks.
 
- An example of boosting the value of your own guys is when I traded
  for Calvin Johnson. Santonio Holmes by himself was a D, but when I
  signed Eric Moulds (an F), Holmes' rating moved up to a D+.
  The final deal was something like Santonio Holmes, Eric Moulds, and
  another D free agent for a B+ Calvin Johnson.

- Since it is easy to get certain positions in a trade, I decide not
  to draft them until late. This is the same as not drafting a
  position because you can get a free agent.
 
- Also, you should try to sign free agents and package them for first
  round draft picks.  So try to target the weakest teams in the
  league and take their first rounder.
 
- One of the main keys to getting the most out of your trades is to
  make sure you always max out what you receive. Always ask for
  another 4th-6th round pick. If you make 5 or 6 trades and you are
  able to get an extra 4th, 5th, or 6th rounder every time, you can
  package these picks together to obtain more assets for future
  trades (you can trade three 4ths for a 2nd, three 5ths for a 3rd,
  three 6ths for a 4th).  Just by simply adding those "garbage picks"
  on to a trade, you could potentially end up with a few 2nd round
  picks.

Here is some advice I received from Charles Mayerhofer. Thanks!

- Offensive tackles are by far the most skilled linemen so instead of
  drafting an ok guard or center or signing free a agent one, many
  offensive tackles will have their rating increase by 5 - 8 points
  when switched to guard or center. so when it comes time to draft a
  guard instead of picking a 86 overall guard draft a backup tackle
  who is 86 instead and change him to a 92 guard later.

- Also this is kind of cheap but when you resign players you can try
  changing their position to one they stink at and sign for a lot 
  less, but if your going to do that you might as well just turn the
  salary cap off.
