In the Castle of Leyawiin there is an orc called Mazoga. You talk to her and then you talk to the Count. He will ask you to kill Black Bow bandits at a ruin called Telepe. You go with Mazoga and after you kill them you become a knight. Then you will get a key to the nearby lodge and each Black Bow Bandit you kill take their bow because the Count will give you 100 gold for each bow you give him.
If you get the shivering isles expansion you can become The Madgod and you have duties where you can send soldiers or go do them yourself. That's as close to guarding a city/realm as you can get.
You can dress up as a guard by finding a guard helmet, the cuirass with the cities badge on it, a shield with the cities badge on it, chainmail greaves, chainmail boots and chainmail gauntlets.
Hope this helps!
There is also the Nights the the Nine official Plug-in. The Nights of the Nine allows you to go on a quest to restore the Nights of the Nine, With you being one of said Nine...or something to that effect...
You can become a Knight of Nine or MadGod. But Guard? Unlikely.
You can become a Blade,Knight of the Nine, or Madgod but never a Gaurd sorry
