At the end of the game on the memorial thing that shows pictures of those who died in the war it says '117'

It master cheifs number but he dosnt die if you beet the last level on legendary it shows masterchief is alive and he goes into a sleeping chamber and tells cortana to wake him up when help comes

Wii nut =], is correct it shows the ship breaking apart and Spartan 117 on the half floating in space. And yes the 117 is for spartan 117 because they believe he is dead.

All of the above also it is Spartan 117 but his name is John and his rank is Master Chief Petty Officer
