1. I bought the game myself, but I suggest you don't purchase it. Personally, it was fun the first time through, but by the second playthrough, I didn't like it as much.
2. Yes and no. You can't actually "carve" out caves with the terrain tools. However, you can make a "cave" by digging a trench, then placing rocks and other things over it to cover it up.
For your first question it depends, this game can take a very long time to complete, so renting it for that time can be quite expensive, This game is also pretty old so it is fairly cheap anyway.
I am not sure about the second question, as I have asked this question to friends myself numerous times.
Don't waste time buying this it takes far to long and it takes two full days and a half to finish not including side missions. It feels longer due to a story which quite frankly no player could care about. The game is this in A nutshell .shoot people , repair gun, replenish ammo , destroyed checkpoint , buy gun from shop, checkpoint has respawned, gun is terrible, got killed by car doin five MPH , buddy comes , and dies cos he's got a pistol, secondary jammed, primary out of ammo, knife left and last guy signAlled for help, running away, died , smashing my controller,RROD, crying- this is why it's called farCRY.
