Version 0.6 - November 22nd, 2005
----------------------------------
First version of this guide. Completed everything up to Game modes section. I
decided to submit what I have right now, knowing that this is the first FAQ
for this game. =p 14 KB

Version 0.8 - December 3rd, 2005
--------------------------------
Forgive the late update, I've been real busy lately and haven't gotten the
chance to work on this FAQ. As for the update, I completed the first complete
version of this FAQ. And if you haven't noticed, I reformatted the Table of
Contents and some headers. I might update it if something comes up or if I
decide to reformat the whole thing again. Actually, I think I have something
in mind. Enjoy the FAQ. 36 KB.

Version 1.0 - December 4th, 2005
--------------------------------
Alright, implemented a search system in the Table of Contents and in the
headers. Added the section I had in mind called Music Listing. With all this
done, I think the FAQ is officially complete. 40 KB.

This section is just an introduction to those who have never played a football
game or watched one or TV.

The game football is very simple to understand - if you can understand NFL, you
can do this! There are four basic positions:

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
- Goalkeeper - attempts to block shots at goal. The only member who can use his
               hands.
+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

- Defender - attempts to stop the attackers or midfielders from scoring by
               tackling them. Stays back.
+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
- Midfielder - assists the attack and defense.

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
- Attacker - shoots at the opponents goal and stays up the field

+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

And here are some very basic rules

FOOTBALL is a 22 player game.
-----------------------------
Football (soccer) consists of 22 players (well, official games) with 11
players in each team. One keeper with 10 outfield players in each team.

FOOTBALL is a passing game
--------------------------
Remember, the ball moves faster than the player. Passing the ball helps
your team score!

You need to SHOOT a BALL into the NET to win
--------------------------------------------
By scoring goals more than you conceded will allow you to win

Throw-in
--------
When the ball goes out, the one who get to throw the ball in is the opposition
of the side who last touched the ball. For example, if Cristiano Ronaldo
(Man. United) touched the ball last, then Damien Duff (Chelsea) will get to
do the throw-in.

Fouls
-----
Now, in this game, if you do a sliding tackle that did not hit the ball
but hit the player who is bringing the ball that is a foul. If you use your
hand to block the ball (in the game, you can't do it intentionally, just
accidently), that's a foul. The most obvious foul is when you tackle the guy
from the back. Sure a yellow or even a red card! But, the referee would allow
the advantage rule. Scroll down to red about it.

Advantage Rule
--------------
During some point of the game, well, almost every game, the referee
would just leave a foul unattended. This is because of the advantage
rule. The one who committed the foul will be safe while the one who is
tackled will... you know. When you tackle and it will sure grant you
a card, it is better to the opposition to retrieve the ball and your
player safe. Same thing when the foul is committed against you. If you
are tackled and the referee's picture is shown at the top left of the
screen, advantage rule is engaged. If you managed to get the loose ball
first, the foul will be left unattended and gives you a chance for a
break. Beware, your player could suffer.

Offside
-------
This happens when a player is behind the defense line when the ball is
played to him. The offside will only be given if the ball is played to
him. I'll just draw this for you.

        + +

        + +

        + +
  # ---> #                          # ------->#
        + +

OFFSIDE!!!!! NOT OFFSIDE!!!

The '+' symbol represents the defender while '#'representing your
player. The arrow represents your pass.

And there you go. Those may seem confusing but I recommend firstly to read the
simple controls below, then try a friendly match. The rules should then
hopefully make sense. The game is very simple to understand once you grasp the
basics.

O============================================================================O
                       >--- 4.1~ Tactics ---< (0401)
O============================================================================O

There are 3 kind of game tactics in UEFA 2004. The game usually suggests you
to play with the tactics you'd set. I guess they were right. You will lose the
match if you don't.

Now, here is section that will help you know what is the difference between
those tactics and you should be able to think your own way to suit the style.

Possession
----------
This is very basic tactics. Just as it says, Possession, keep the ball but
why should I, some of you might ask. Here is the answer. Keep the ball by
passing it around and try to lure out the defenders or mess up their formation.
It usually provide spaces for your shot.

Wing Play
---------
This one very popular tactics in our real world since everybody thought that
the wings were the most skillful players in football except for forwards. This
tactics basically provide your team more spaces at the sides and allow your
wingers to dribble down it and cross the ball. This kind of tactics are widely
seen in EPL and usually scores header goals.

Long Balls
----------
This tactics isn't what it really means by its name. It is actually a kind of
counter attack. When your defender clear the ball from your side, the forwards
will receive the ball most of the time. This gives you a big advantage as there
only a few defenders to get pass. Timing is very important in this tactics.

O============================================================================O
                    >--- 4.2~ Formations/Lineups ---< (0402)
O============================================================================O

There are loads of formations to choose from. Here are the main ones along with
a brief description:

4-4-2 : Most common formation. A balanced team with no real emphasis on attack
        or defense

4-3-3 : With 3 strikers this is definately one of the best attacking options.
Watch out though because the smaller midfield won't provide as much
        defensive cover.

3-4-3 : Again an attack minded team but pay caution to the fact that you have
        only 3 defenders!

4-5-1 : Don't use this. Ever. This formation will only slog out 0-0 draws and
will give you very little attacking power.

5-4-1 : Same really as above. You'll need a good striker and fit midfielders
        to score. Avoid.

5-3-2 : Not quite as defensive as you have wingbacks who are players that can
support the midfield. This is actually quite a useful formation.

5-2-3 : 5 defenders seems very defensive but again they are wingbacks. The
major fault is that you only have 2 midfielders so fit wingbacks are
        needed.

3-6-1 : Great attacking formations as long as your midfielders support the
        lone striker.

There are also some other formations like the 4-1-2-1-2 but those are similar
to the #-#-# style formations.

For lineups pick the most suited player for the position. It will say under
the name of the player where he likes to play.

[--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==]

These are things that will only be found in this game. They won't sorta apply
in real life. Great info for beginners at this game.

O============================================================================O
                   >--- 5.1~ Player's Abilites ---< (0501)
O============================================================================O

These abilities appear on the bottom of the screen, next to the players name.
Each ability makes them a bit stronger than the average player. Keep a look
out for this and use them well.

A picture of a guy Slide Tackling = This means this player is more expierenced
in tackling. He actuallly does it better. When he slide tackles there is a
greater chance it will not be a foul. (If he gets them in front but if he gets
them form behind it's a foul!) The players who have these abilities are
defensive players and rarely any midfielders.

A picture of a guy dribbling the ball = This picture means that this player
is a excellent dribbler. He could easily cross a guy over but with no move.
Just move the player left and right constantly and once you reach the opposing
player he will try to tackle you with be and he'll miss, allowing you to move
on. Cool, huh?

A picture of a guy running = The ability the player gets with this one is he
is able to runn faster than the average player. He will likely out run a
number of players he goes up against. This also means his running stamina
(located next to the ability at the bttom) will raise faster and go down
slowy. Meaning he will not get tired that easily. This ability is not common.

A picture of a guy about to shoot = I like this ability. This one allows the
player a better make the a shot for goal. It really helps the player since it
makes it harder for the goal keeper to block. He also has power in his
shooting than any other player. I would put a player with this ability to
shoot direct and in-direct free kicks.

O============================================================================O
                    >--- 5.2~ Player's Status Bar ---< (0502)
O============================================================================O

The players status bar is located at the bottom-right of the screen. It has
the players name, morale indicator, his ability (if he has one), and his
fatigue level. I'll use my crappy ascii art skills to show you how it looks.

          ,------- Players Name

Morale: This level decreases the more a player sprints, slowing him down,
but replinishes when he returns to normal pace.

GAMEPLAY
========

Tactics is important
--------------------
Play with the tactic you had set. The tactic will actually ease your team's
movement and attacking style. Most importantly, choose the tactic that suit
your style.

Passing is the key
------------------
Pass often. There's no one-man show in football. Passing often provides
space for your players to move and score. Although you should pass often but
please pass intelligently. Pass to unmarked players only. Passing a ball to
marked player will loses your ball possession most of the time. Using through
passes and lobbed through pass is very useful but make sure you use it wisely.

Slow down!
----------
Never ever sprint towards a defender. It is stupid because you will surely
lose your possession. Do a few trick or just a simple turn of direction will do
job but it doesn't guaranteed work for sometimes.

Shoot smartly
-------------
Shoot from of a different angle of your run. This will mostly be a goal if
the shooter's skill is high.

Stay calm
---------
Never rush your CB out of their position to tackle a ball unless he is very
near you or you have no other choices. Always try to take control of a
midfielder and rush back for the ball. If there are no forwards on the side,
then you may rush the RB or LB towards the ball.

Let go of that D
----------------
Don't always depend on D, conservative tackle in other words, because you may
easily been fooled by your opponent with just a simple turn.

MENU SCREENS
============

Tournament squad selection
--------------------------
Choose current squads if you want to include recent player swaps in a
tournament or select default squads to overwrite any unsaved squads.

Using the virtual keyoard
-------------------------
To input names, move the left thumbstick to highlight each character and press
A. Select DONE to enter a name.

Practice mode pause menu
------------------------
When practicing set pieces in practice mode, select a location (an area of the
pitch) form wich to take them (1 corresponds to the left of the opponent's
goal)

AMATEUR:
--------
Just pass the ball quite alot and hammer in crosses. The com isn't hard to beat
on this level so there's no real need for fancy stuff. Maybe a few days at this
level and you're up to semi-pro.

SEMI-PRO:
---------
Take more care whilst passing and direct them better. Start using through balls
but beware: don't make the mistake that using a through ball is always the best
option, use X passes as well. Don't wait until you get inside the box to shoot
all the time, as you will usually be tackled. As long as you don't lose
possession often and keep a tight defense then you'll be fine. Also start using
first touch control if you haven't already, but again don't use it all of the
time.

PRO:
----
Eek. This is tough but certainly not impossible. The CPU gives you little time
to pass inside their half so always look out for options. Radar helps immensely
here. Again using first touch control correctly, passing quickly but neatly and
taking advantage of every chance you have will help you win. Nonetheless this
takes real skill.

WORLD CLASS:
------------
OMFG. Hard. The CPU can close you down in seconds and can turn a goal-line
clearance into a goal in seconds. Use every skill that you have learned and
hope that the opponent's star striker gets injured.

This is a section where strategies for various situations listed. The
strategies enable reader to be successful in various situations.

                      >--- 9.1~ Free Kicks ---< (0901)
O============================================================================O

There are 2 kind of free-kicks, indirect free-kicks and direct free-kicks.
Let's talk about indirect free-kicks first. Indirect is quite like corners. You
need to cross the ball in and hopefully some one might get to the ball and
shoot into the back of the net. The only difference is that there is no
stationary receiver. There are 3 receivers to choose from and are stated with
there respective controls.

Now, is all about timing and some luck. Try strafe your player to the
opposite direction you are going to move into. While the kicker put down his
hand, rush your player forward and hold the button the opposite direction. If
you rush the player too early or late, the keeper will step out and intercept
the cross but sometime it will miss it and it's your biggest chance to score.
That's why I say you need some luck. Do not trap the cross, shoot it right
away. You should more chance of scoring like this. Also remember to shot to the
side of the keeper and not towards the keeper.

In the other hand, defending indirect free-kicks aren't easy. As soon as your
opponent chose his receiver, you will automatically switch another player which
is in front of his receiver. Your mission is to block him from reaching the
cross. Moving around near your original position aids you by increasing the
speed of your defender apply pressure to the receiver. If you failed to block
him, you have only one choice. Clear the ball away by pressing D and the
directional keys. Rushing the keeper won't help, please don't do so.

Direct free-kicks is a direct shot from the free-kick toward the goal. Aim
your shot away the goal keeper. You can try to curl your ball by using the
SHIFT and the directional key to move the cross-hair on the ball on top of the
meter. Try to stop the moving point as near the end of the yellow meter as you
can. Avoid stopping the moving point at the red meter, it will shoot your ball
over the bar. After that, the moving point will move backwards and try to stop
it at the left side of the green meter if you want the ball to go a bit slight
to the left. Same theory if you want the ball to go slight to the right.

O============================================================================O
                       >--- 9.2~ Corners ---< (0902)
O============================================================================O

Corners are almost alike indirect free-kicks instead corners have a stationary
receiver. The stationary receiver doesn't no have to move but he has to
maintain his position until the cross reached him. The ability of him maintains
his position is depends on his STR stat, the higher the better.

Defending a stationary receiver is to push him away and maintain yourself at
his previous position and clear the ball away. The success rate of pushing him
away is depends on your defender's STR stat. It is actually very difficult to
maintain your position after you'd push him away because if you pushed him
until you positioned yourself outside the spot, the receiver will walk around
you and return to the spot.

The other receiver are the same as the indirect free-kicks'. So, read the
Free-kicks section above. I don't want to write it again.

O============================================================================O
                       >--- 9.3~ Penalties ---< (0903)
O============================================================================O

Penalties are the easiest way to score goals. It is so simple. What you need
to do is to pick a direction and press D. If the meter goes to the red and you
are in trouble, the shot will go over the crossbar for sure unless your shot is
towards the bottom center of the goal post.

Defending a penalty is very easy too but saving it is 100% luck. Same as
shooting a penalty, you just simply choose a direction and press D. If you want
to go for the center, don't press anything.

O============================================================================O
                >--- 9.4~ One-on-one with the Keepers ---< (0904)
O============================================================================O

There are a few strategies to beat the keeper when facing them one on one but
the strategies won't guaranteed 100% work. Thus, don't blame me when you didn't
score from it.

Chip Shot
---------
Chip shots are executed by pressing B + L trig. It should be used only when the
keeper rushes out of his position. You need practice a lot of this in the
Practice Mode if really want to master it. The key for this shot is the timing
and the power of your shot. A too early shot will be received by the keeper
safely while a late shot will be snatched by the keeper from your feet before
you can really shot it. A chip shot that isn't high enough has the possibility
of being saved by the keeper although it doesn't happen often.

Fake Shot
---------
Fake shot is executed by pressing Black. It should be used only when you are
near the keeper and the keeper is not rushing out. If your fake shot is
successful, the keeper will dive down. Doing a fake shot near the 6-yard box
will be successful but the keeper will rushes out before you can do a fake shot
if you are in the center of the penalty box. I suggest you use fake shots only
when you are moving from the side towards goal because the keeper won't rushes
while you moving from this direction.

Low Shot
--------
Low shot is the easiest shot to execute during one-on-ones. It can be
executed either if the keeper rushes out or not. The only key is to shot to the
side of the keeper and not directly into the keeper. Low shot was also my
personal favorite for scoring.

Q: Where are Holland?
A: They are not there. They are not unlockable. They don't like being in footy
games so they didn't want to be in the game. UEFA isn't the only game with
this problem. FIFA had it (Ned 26 to Ned 13...).

Q: How do I put swerve on my shots?
A: This is called 'aftertouch' and is quite tricky. It can only be practically
used on shots from further out due to the time taken not only to input the
commands but for them to take effect. Aim your shot as normal as you power
up the power bar using the analog stick. After the shot has been struck,
release the analog stick, then quickly press it again in the direction you
   wish the ball to swerve.

Q: Which is the best team?
A: Hmmmm...I really can't answer this. It's really up to you, depending on your
strategy and your likings. I personally prefer Italy, as they have many
quality players, a stable defense, and a lot of star shooters (no, they
are not people who shoot stars. They are people who are stars at shooting).

Q: How do you prevent the opponent from scoring from corners?
A: First, select a player near the goal and sprint him to the goal line. He
   will
act as a block if the ball goes his way. Then when the corner is taken,
select a player close to the receiving opponent and do a conservative
tackle to knock the ball out of him. Keep tackling until the ball's gone,
but never do a aggressive tackle as that'll probably result in a penalty,
   and a card.

Q: Is there any commentary?
A: Of course. John Motson and Ally McCoist provide informative, and sometimes
   humorous commentary and Sound FX.

Q: What do all the abreviations stand for in position?
A: Here's a list of the more complicated positions:

CF-Center Forward- A forward who is not as far upfront compared to a striker.

CAM-Central Attacking Midfield- Usually is in between the midfielders and the
strikers.

RWM & LWM-Right/Left Wing Midfield- Plays on the wing, the widest position
available.

CDM-Central Defensive Midfield- Usually in between the midfielders and the
defenders.

Q: [Insert any right-analogue related question here]
A: Check the guide at gamefaqs.

Q: Cheats?
A: None.
