You don't have to save the cups in this game. After you unlock the newer cups, the game automatically saves it for you. You can then access them anytime during Time-Trials and VS. But for Grand - Prix, they only stay in the mode you unlocked them in. So if you unlocked the Special Cup for 100 CC, it will only be available for 100 CC, not for 50 CC or 150 CC grand-prix.
