British bombing mission

How do you complete the bombing mission without enough fuel? After bombing the four land sites, you have to return to base but don't have enough fuel to reach it. How are you supposed to get back?

You don't make it back to base. Just before you finish the level you have to shoot down some more Nazi planes to protect your bomber. This is the only time that you see a star on the radar when you're acting the gunner. Keep going in the direction indicated by the star and you should get past the level.
