Using Powerups Effectively

-All powerups can be either thrown behind you or used behind you by holding the "Look Back" button before using a powerup.

- All powerups can be thrown or used while you're spinning, so if you have a powerup such as the Zone Disruption you can use it at the same time an opponent uses theirs to spin both of you out at the same time.

- The Rocket powerup can be negated by Dynamite, another Rocket, the Zone Disruption, or the Oil Slick. By timing these right, you can hit the Rocket before it hits you.

- The Oil Slick powerup does not slow down other drivers, but lowers how much they can control their kart. The CPUs tend to handle Oil Slicks fairly well. On tracks with Sharp turns or overhead objects, the Oil Slick can be thrown forwards with good timing to either bounce it off the overhead objects or hit slightly in front of you by throwing it ahead of a turn, which can make them hit drivers in front of you more effectively. Oil Slicks are affected by gravity, and if they land on angled surfaces they will slide down the track. By aiming them right, you can narrowly avoid your own Oil Slicks and hit drivers directly behind you. Be careful with this powerup, as not only can you hit yourself with your own Oil Slick, but you can also hit your partner.

- The Rocket powerup should be thrown behind you when you're in the lead as soon as possible. Be aware that you can hit your own partner with your Rocket if they're close to you. Being hit by a Rocket will not make you lose momentum if you're in an active Boost, or are directly in front of another driver (including your partner).

- The Dynamite powerup can be used similarly to the Oil Slick to hit drivers far ahead of you by throwing it over turns, and is very effective when thrown behind you early in a race to separate the pack from you. You can't be hit by your own Dynamite, so feel free to use it however you like.

- The Zone Disruption powerup can be used on turns with no edges and jumps to knock other drivers off the track.

-Avoid using the Yellow Flag or Instruive Ad powerups when one or the other is in effect, as they do not stack. These powerups are usually gotten when you're in the middle of the pack or further behind.

- The Fuel Can and Free Pass powerups are usually gotten when you're near or at the very back of the pack. If you aren't doing well in a race, you can intentionally let yourself fall back to 12th place and grab every Powerup until you get the Free Pass. Almost every time the Free Pass will send you to the front of the race, or very close to it. The Fuel Can powerup will also fully charge your Boost meter at the end of its' duration. You can use the Fuel Can to enter a Grind with other drivers and win them instantly, causing them to spin out. .

Using Other Drivers to Your Advantage

Other drivers can be used in several different ways to do better in races.

- At the beginning of the race, you can use boosts gotten by quickly pressing the drive button before the green light to place yourself directly in front of them. Because the other CPU drivers seem to get a speed advantage at the beginning of races, you can let drivers run up against the back of your kart to catch their momentum and not fall as far behind. However, be careful not to hit the sides of their cars during the beginning of the race, as they will almost always win and spin you out when you enter a Grind with them.

- T-boning other karts will not enter Grind mode, and do not count as hard objects. If you overshoot a turn or take some of the jump shortcuts on tracks like Bristol, you can run directly into the side of other racers (or even your partner) to keep your momentum and quickly straighten out.

- When a driver is spun out, either by losing a Grind, being hit by certain powerups or track hazards, you can run directly into them in order to make them spin out longer, and on tracks without edges you can force them off the track. This does not work on drivers who are flipping instead of spinning (I.e. From being hit by Dynamite), and hitting drivers that are flipping will cause them to match your speed and stay ahead of you, so go around them when this happens. This can also be used to your advantage to negate Dynamite, by having other drivers run into the back of your car.

- Your partner makes a great shield against the Rocket attack. Try to keep them behind you for as long as possible so that they take the hit.

- You can get directly behind another driver and use the Oil Slick powerup to immediately inflict it on them. This can be timed so that they miss jumps and turns with open edges. .

Track Shortcuts and Tips

Talladega - Just before Turn 3 on the inside of the track are some roadblocks hiding a shortcut. Be sure to maintain good control going into it as it has sharp corners. You can also take pit lane to skip part of the track.

Cactus Pass - Just before the first big turn on the left are some roadblocks covering a significant shortcut. Store a boost and use it there, as it's all slower track.

Junkyard - This track has very wide and forgiving turns, and cutting all the corners will put you significantly far ahead of the other drivers. Just before the second to last turn, on the right hand side there's a shortcut with a ramp and an elevated section with a powerup at the end. Be careful to avoid the posts as they'll completely stop you.

Race Oil Harbor - The second long turn has two separate shortcuts, but you can only take one. The right side shortcut has powerups, and the left hand side shortcut has boosts (although the building is filled with posts to run into). There is a jump inside a tunnel, and if you use a boost before hitting the ramp you'll end up on top of the tunnel, with powerups at the end. The last turn is also very wide, and you can cut the corner to get a little bit ahead.

Daytona - On the turn immediately after the beachside straightaway there are three powerups in rapid succession. If you quickly press the powerup button while collecting them you can use three powerups at the same time. The 90 degree turn after the highway segment can be cut to save time. The left hand side of the tunnel afterwards has a powerup. When you enter the speedway segment of the track, pit lane has powerups and can be used to skip a little bit of the track.

Dinosaur Canyon - Right at the end of the track, if you continue straight to the left of the direction sign, you can enter pit lane for the track and skip a small portion. You can also stay to the right of pit lane, hit the boost zone and skip a little bit more of the track by jumping over the cliff.

Red Clay Run - This track has lots of wide turns, which can be cut to get significantly ahead of the other drivers.

Dover - This track has a lot of wide turns, however some of them can be difficult to skip, as going quickly through them can make you overshoot the next turns. The flat tops of the outside corns of the two turns between the lava zones can be driven on top of, which can negate the downsides of overshooting them if done right. On Race Reverse mode, the section with the Dover Giant can be skipped by using a boost over the cliff.

Riverside - This track has many sharp turns which can be cut through. The best technique to do this is to drift into them, and them release the drift button so that when you run over the curbs your kart is going straight when it lands.

Bristol - The first few turns have ditches that can be driven through to cut parts of the track, though you will need boosts for them to be effective. Many of the turns are wide, and drifting into the inside corners lets you skip some of them. Before the hairpin turn, if you store two boosts, you can skip the entire hairpin turn by boosting across the cliff. You may want two boosts, as you'll likely end up in the wall on the other side. The speedway section of the track has two separate pit lanes that both have powerups in them. The second pit lane has several powerups which can be used in rapid succession.

Patriot Park - If you drift just before the big jump, there's a shortcut on the left side of the track. You can also wait until after the jump and cut through the barrier to get a powerup. There are a number of powerups and boost zones near and inside of the hangar section, though colliding with any of the objects in the hangar will negate any boosts obtained. On the inside of the final turn is a shortcut marked by roadblocks. Be sure not to drift in this section, as the small sharp turns make it almost impossible to not run into objects..
