Total War: Three Kingdoms is a real-time turn-based strategy game set in Ancient China where the objective is to rise to the position of Emperor and unite all provinces under a single, imperial rule. You must choose between 12 different generals to start your journey with, each has a specific trait that makes them a viable option to become emperor of China and each has unique units that give them an advangtage in specific battles. Check out our Total War: Three Kingdoms Cheats and tips if you are struggling to conquer factions.

Cheats, Tips and Strategy

Below is a collection of hints and tips that will help you to progress in the game. These include starting military action and fighting multiple factions. As well as these hints and tips we also have a mini-guide here which goes into more details on some of the tips we have below:

Gold

Gold is an important resource as it allows you to train new units, build more buildings, and hire units that possess special skills. Make sure extract an adequate amount of gold from the peasantry as the lack of it will slow down the overall development of your general and lead to backruptcy and the gradual loss of troops.

Public Order

Public order increases the presence of the army, reduces taxes and lowers cost of some buildings. It is advised that you have at least one building in your city or settlement that increases public order. If you allow public order to fall to -100 it will cause rebellion and you will lose control.

Border Settlements

Settlements located on the borders that have a hostile faction need to be secured. This can be done by keeping one of your armies there so there is a military presence there at all times that can intervene if necessary. If you are unable to do this build stuctures in nearby settlements that will increase the garrison, this will prevent enemies from being able to capture the vulnerable settlement with just one army. Check out our How to Unlock Units page to learn how you can increase your army.

Food Production

Make sure with the development and increase of settlements and cities in your kingdom you regularly increase their food production accordingly. Food production reserves can be increased with the help of the grain farming garrison building chain and through trade with other factions.

Starting Military Action

Before declaring war against another faction and launching an attack you need to ensure you have the appropriate level of public order, sufficent funds in your treasury and enough food to see out the campaign. Check out our Preparing for War Guide to learn what precautions you must first take before starting a military campagin against another faction.

Fighting Multiple Factions

Even if your Kingdom is considerably larger than the enemy you will not be able to fight multiple factions at the same time on different fronts. To be successful you will need to deal with factions one at a time and this may involve using diplomacy to conclude a temporary peace with a neighboring faction to do so.

Troop Morale

After their health the morale of your units is the most important stat you need to keep an eye on. If you allow the morale of your units to reach zero they will retreat from the battlefield and you will lose control of them. You can prevent this happening by allowing the unit with the low morale to either momentarily retreat or use the special ability of your general to boost their spirits. Check out our How to Steal Characters page to learn how you can get the best characters and units for your retinue.

Don't Exhaust Troops

Under normal conditions units enter battle as rested and tire out by fighting. Exchausted troops are far less efficient in battle and they will have decreased morale. If your unit has to march a long distance before a battle you need to ensure you give them adequate time to recover before using them to engage the enemy.
