When an area turns blue it indicates that there is no longer anything useful there while those that are red indicates there is some kind of useful item still there you can obtain. You are not told what it is, it may be an important quest item, or it could just be some ammo. Either way it is essential that you backtrack and check it out before you progress and trigger the next objective as there is the possibility that once it has been triggered you will not be allowed to go back.
