Learn How to Brake and Dive
Two key maneuvers you need to be adept at in The Falconeer is braking and diving. Being able to brake effectively during combat scenarios is essential as is diving to pick up items such as lost goods and mines from the water. In order to make your bird brake suddenly in The Falconeer you need to tap the left trigger on your Xbox controller, when you do so your bird will come to a complete stop for a second which will allow you to quickly assess your options if you are engaged in combat. Being able to brake suddenly also comes in useful when you think you are about to overshoot a water-bound object or a perch to land on.
You will need to know how to brake to be able to dive into the water. To perform a dive you need to tap the left trigger to brake and then press it again so your bird rears up to stop itself from gliding. If you now press forward on the left thumbstick of your controller your bird will dive headfirst into the ocean below and pick up the item that you have spotted. Your bird will then proceed to carry the item in it's talons until you reach a destination where you can receive splinters from any items you find. It is important to remember that while you are carrying something your bird will fly considerably slower and you will not be able to perfrom aerial maneuvers which will make you suspectible to enemy fire as a result. If you are attacked while carrying something you simply need to drop the item and deal with the foe and then retrieve whatever you where carrying afterwards.
