Super Mario Maker 2 Cheats and Tips

Switch
Last Updated: by Dennis

Super Mario Maker 2 is a side-scrolling platform game by Nintendo that has a story mode and online and local multiplayer for groups of four. Super Mario Maker 2 also features a game creation system where players design their own custom courses using assets from the various games across the Super Mario franchise and share them online. Check out our Super Mario Maker 2 cheats and tips to find out how you can create the best possible level.

Cheats, Tips and Strategy

Below is a collection of hints and tips that will help you to progress in the game. These include starting of simple and using the alternate functions and options of items.

Play Story Mode

Take the time to play the story mode which involves building Peach a new castle as this is basically a tutorial that teaches you each of Mario Maker 2's tools in Maker mode. Although these tools are intuitive enough and you will find plenty of written tutorial content in Maker mode, playing Story mode will give you a top-to-bottom look at what the each stage element can do in the form of over 100 levels, each designed by the Mario experts at Nintendo using the Mario Maker tools.

Use the Touch Screen

Super Mario Maker was originally a Wii U title and was designed around a touch screen. Nintendo has implimented the use of controller-based inputs which are fiddly to use and will take time to get used to. To begin with it is recommended that you use the touch screen as this will enable you to get things done quickly. If you want pin-point accuracy you will be able to find a range of Switch-friendly stylus options available online.

Start Off Simple

After completing the hundred-plus levels in Story mode you will probably have lots of level ideas of your own you will want to create. To begin with it is advised that you start off simple, just have an area where you need to get from A to B that maybe has a sub-zone via a pipe and a sealed-off boss room that must be tackled before the end. Although it will only be a basic level compared to those found in Story mode and Course World it will nonetheless be a great primer to learn the tools so you can create more complicated things later on.

Check the Alternate Functions and Options of Items

If you are familiar with the Super Mario world you will know what things like a Super Mushroom or a Fire Flower does. However in Super Mario Maker 2 you can adjust their abilities by pressing and holding on any given item once it is in play to reveal the additional functions and options that item has and how they can be used. A Super Mushroom for example can be given wings that enables it to fly or a parachute so it can slowly drop down from above. These alternate functions can be combined with the alternate functions of other items to produce even more unique effects. Additional features can also be found on most of the items found in the game, you just need to press and hold down an item to reveal them.

Choosing a World

Super Mario Maker 2 gives you access to five different worlds of Mario (Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 3D World). You will be initially influenced when you pick a world by style and nostalgia but it is advised that before you do so you look at what each world offers you mechanically and in power-ups before you make a decision as each is subtly different with different items.

Don't Go Overboard

When putting your Mario Level Design together you need to make sure you do not go overboard and clutter it up with too many things, this is easily done as the game gives you lots of different tools. Keep this in mind along with the following tips.

- Build your level around one idea that evolves and changes as the player progresses through it.

- Don't build something frustrating

- Avoid Dead Ends

- Maintain a balance between the number of enemies and power ups you have.

- Use coins, power-ups and arrows to help direct and draw the player towards key pieces of your level.

We hope these tips help you out in the game, we also have some FAQs for Super Mario Maker 2, you can also submit your own questions there for other players to answer.
