------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------[ VANGUARD ]-------------------------------- -------------------------------[by Ice Queen Zero]----------------------------- -----------------------------------[Atari 5200]-------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also for 2600 and the Arcade (though the latter is a little different) o---------------------o INTRODUCTION o---------------------o This was another one of SNK's breakout games in the arcades if not the first and it helped pave the way for shooters like Scramble (which in turn led to Gradius game and other related games). o---------------------o DISCLAIMER o---------------------o Vanguard and its characters are trademarks of SNK and all copyrights belong to them. Your goal is to fly through the tunnel and reach the end of it. It's not as simple as it looks however. There are many enemies in the way who would love to blast you out of the sky. You have to shoot your way out to survive. o---------------------o CONTROLS o---------------------o Up/Down/left/right = move the player along the screen and also allows players to shoot in that direction Button = fire your weapon The above controls apply to the Atari 2600 and 5200. The arcade version of the game had a separate joystick for firing so you didn't have to fire your shots in the direction you were traveling. o---------------------o ENEMIES o---------------------o There are a number of enemies you fly by and they are very deadly. Some of them shoot lasers. Mist - they look like helicopters that occasionally bounce up and down. They don't normally shoot lasers till late in the stage. Harley - Jetfighters that shoot lasers and try to crash into you if you are level with them Helm - they only appear in the vertical level. They are saucers that move left and right. Amno - they appear in the vertical level. They constantly fire lasers to the right. Building Base - They are still objects that can be shot for points Kelmus - they look like sperm. They appear in the vertical level too on the opposite side of the Amnos Garine - they move upwards on the vertical level and suck your gas if they catch you. Romeda - they are shaped like down-pointing arrows that rain down. Barrier - they try to make you crash into them after you get through the Amnos or the Kelmuses. Gond - the boss at the very end of the path who shoots lasers out of nowhere but can be defeated in one shot. o---------------------o GAMEPLAY o---------------------o You will automatically shoot in the direction you are moving in. Pressing another direction will let you fire forward and in the direction pointed. So basically, you are shooting just by staying still. On the straight passageways, you'll notice E-blocks at the bottom. These render you unable to shoot but also leave you invincible for a certain period of time. Take the time to charge into enemies who are a pain in the ass especially the ones with laser. The safest place on the zones are at the bottom of the horizontal area and the top or bottom of the vertical scrolling area. These give you time to make quick dodging and selective shooting for those on your level or flying past you which you press the direction to shoot. Don't be a wimp with shooting. You must shoot the enemies in order to keep your gas meter intact or else you die automatically when you are forced to make a crash landing. Careful of the top and bottom of the screen in the horizontal scrolling area as you can crash into them and die. When the level begins, you are shown a map of the area. When you reach the end of one scrolling segment, you will be shown the map again to display the direction you are moving in. TO avoid hand tiring, it's better to hold down the fire button than to keep pressing the fire button. Once you reach the very end of the road, you get to take on Gond, the best way to defeat him is to hold down on the D-pad and fire one shot at him and he is gone just like that. That seems way to easy. In one of the upward moving levels, there is a path where the direction you choose depends on the enemies you face followed by a barrier. The left leads to Kelmuses and the right side leads to building bases and Amnos. Garines normally suck up your gas instead of kill you. They can however, hold you down until you crash into a wall if you are not careful. When Gond is defeated, you go through another round of shooting and this time the path will change. For example, the first path went right, down, right, and up. The next path is like a staircase going up. In the arcade version, there are only 2 different layouts. After you win the 2nd level, you go back to the first layout and it gets tougher. There is a sequel called Vanguard 2 for the Arcade only (rereleased on PS Network). o---------------------o CREDITS o---------------------o SNK for making the game. GameFAQs for hosting my FAQ.
