Do not skip the introduction in Act 4: Scene 13 - 'Subway', instead when the scene begins interact with the telephone that is on the small table next to the door. Make sure you use the zoom out function often to check that there are not any enemies in the corner of the level waiting to ambush you.

When you encounter enemies with guns the best tactic is to try and lure them out into the open so you can get easy kills.

You will find that there are a lot more enemies with guns in the sequel so make sure you pick up guns along the way so you have an arsenal available for when you encounter ranged fights.
