Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl Cheats, Tips Strategy

Below is a collection of hints and tips that will help you to progress in the game. These include why you should not skip battling trainers and why you should always make sure your party is fully stocked up with items. As well as these hints and tips, we also have a beginners guide here which goes into more details on some of the tips we have below:

Choosing your Starter

It is essential that you choose your starting Pokemon wisely in in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl as it will have a big impact on how you handle dungeons and gyms. If you want an easier time progressing through the games it is recommended that you select Chimchar as your starter as this Fire-based monkey Pokemon is useful throughout almost all the story. The only exceptions are when you encounter water-based areas. Remember that you can catch and train up other Pokemon to compensate for any weaknesses on your team.

Claim your Free Rare Mew and Jirachi

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl you can claim the mythical Mew and Jirachi by having save data from Pokemon Sword, Pokemon Shield, and Pokemon Let's Go on your Nintendo Switch. Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield saves grant you Jirachi while Let's Go save data will enable you to claim Mew. You will not be able to access either of these Pokemon at the start of the game, to receive them you must reach Floaroma town and talk to the elderly couple that are standing together in a field of flowers. Take a look at our How to get Mythical Mew and Jirachi guide to get more details.

Grind the Grand Underground

Once you reach Eterna City and spoken to the Underground Man in the house that is nearby to the Pokemon Center you will be able to access the Grand Underground. Using the Explorer Kit you can drop down anytime and should consider visiting the Grand Underground to buff your Pokemon. The Pokemon in the Grand Underground will consistently keep approximate pace with your level, making them appropriate for grinding. It is also full of Pokemon that can't be found anywhere else. Take a look at our Grand Underground guide to find out everything you need to know about this feature in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl.

Battle Trainers

You will come across trainers to do battle with as you wander around the world of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl. Although you can skip these fights if you are in need of healing or need to move on, it is recommended that you engage in combat with them whenever possible as battling trainers nets you more experience than wild Pokemon battles. Remember, if you skip too many trainers, you will just have to go back later and battle them or grind.

Speed Things Up

If you want to speed up Pokemon Brilliant Diamond or Pokemon Shining Pearl so things move along faster, you can do so by toggling some settings in the 'Options' menu. These include turning off battle animations, the prompt to nickname your newly-caught Pokemon, and adjusting your text speed. Another time-saver is to toggle off the prompt to change Pokemon when your opponent switches, but be aware if you do this you may be putting yourself at a strategic disadvantage for type matchups.

Hold Items

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl the Held Items mechanic allows you to give your Pokemon passive buffs or emergency healing opportunities during battles. These items are not just useful for battle, just holding an item that doesn't have a utility will make the Pokemon become happier with some Pokemon only able to level up when they hold items. It is therefore recommended that you always make sure your party is fully stocked up with items.
