I used my dog. They find them with their digging skill. All you do is click on your dog if you have one and go to digging. Once it's leveled up some in digging you will get the sniff out something option. Then eventually you will get the sniff out something... Option and you can click on what you want it to find whether it be gems, rocks, beetles, or seeds.
