There are supposed work arounds to becoming host, but generally having the strongest internet connection will suffice. Usually it will happen during the pre-game lobby or through in-game host migration. Sometimes, as I've recently experienced on Black Ops, the host migration will pick weaker connections so everyone except host will lag an skip everywhere.

If you go to the network options it say that the lower number represents a faster connection but I seriously doubt it

I have bad connection and im able to be host and ive tried fixing my wifi and tried switching to a better company but nothing works.

get an xbox one X with a SSD drive, and good internet connection hardwired. Its automatic host with the external SSD.Guest answered:
Upload a large video file to youtube and then sear for a game when in a lobby on your own cancel the upload and then players will end up going into your lobby which when the game starts you will become host.

You can only become host of a game online if you have the best connection between all the players. There isn't much you can really do.

Also, it doesnt work to be waiting in the lobby. Other people can't join with me, nor me with them. Sucks...
