-Story (According to KOF 2006's Profile)-

Mai's a modern female ninja, heir to the Shiranui Ninja Arts. A
graceful fighter, who can manipulate flame. Her highly revealing clothes
and behavior suggest otherwise, but Mai's a traditional Japanese with refined
tastes: a skilled cook and dress maker, she alsso enjoys flower arrangement,
tea ceremony, and Japanese dannce.

Her relationship with her fellow disciple Andy Bogard has stalled, and
she seems to be getting quite impatient with the overly uncommittal
Andy.

-Prologue (Story Mode)-

"What? You're not entering?... What do you mean?"
"Just what I said."
Andy replies as he calmly closes his eyes in a corner of the board-lined
dojo.
"I'm not entering this time."
Mai, who has already packed her stuff as if preparing for vacation, is
struck dumb heraing this.

Now that Andy and Mai have assumed the dojo of the late Hanzo
Shiranui, they cannot afford to leave Japan together.
And Mai cannot help understanding Andy's current line of reasoning.
But 'THE KING OF FIGHTERS' is the big tournament that at most happens
only once a year.
"But can't the both of us enter together just this once?" Mai implores.
Andy, feeling boxed in, snickers nervously: "And I still don't believe I
can beat my brother."

Andy mumbles to himself that now is the time to take stock of himself
while training anew. The sight of this young man silently devoting himself
to a series of trials needed to defeat the man called Terry Bogard, whom
Andy still has never beat, speaks to Mai.
A victory greater than a tournament win--a battle against Terry, who'll
probably join the event, means this much to Andy.

Perhaps this is male pride, unfathomable to females, so Mai can press
him no further.

"And also...I want you to take full care of yourself."
On morning of Mai's departure, Mai will never forget that slightly
awkward request ande the gentle kiss placed on her forehead.

V. Normal Moves

This section is simply here to tell you about the normal attacks that
Mai can use, and when a good time to try and use them are. However,
you must judge when the best time to use them yourself to make the
best use out of Mai.

*Note that the names of each of these moves are my own, based on
what they looked like when used.

--STANDING MOVES--

LP (Forward Fan Mid-Stab)

-This is a great poke move against Standing and Crouching opponents,
but it generally tends to miss airborne enemies.

SP (Forward Fan Head Stab)

-Same as with the LP, but instead it goes upwards. Therefore, it'll
hit airbourne and Standing opponents, but will miss those who are
Crouched.

F + SP (Right Hook)

-This is the start of some Stylish Moves, but can be good by itself, if
used with other moves like Folding Fan Fandango or Dragon Flame
Romp. However, it has a bit of slow recovery on it, so watch out for
that.

B + SP (Open Fan Backhand)

-Not a bad move, if you're trying to get opponents away from you
(which you really shouldn't be doing with Mai....). It comes out
pretty fast, but has a tiny bit of slow recovery to it.

Side-Step Up + SP (Fan Uppercut)

-This is one of Mai's Counterattack moves, and it comes out very
fast with virtually zero recovery time. Not bad, if you like to use
Side-Step a lot.

Side-Step Down + SP

LK (High Kick)

-This move can hit all types of opponents, and it comes out rather
fast, but has a little recovery time. It's best just to use it in conjunction
with a Stylish Move rather than by itself.

SK (Leap Kick)

-This is nice for moving closer to your opponent while attacking at the
same time. However, it has slow startup, and can easily be countered.

F + SK (Rising Knee)

-This is a great move in the fact that it comes out fairly quick, AND
can be used in many different ways, such as chaining into a Stylish
Move or going into a Solar Flash Dance or Deadly Ninja Bees.

Side-Step Up + SK (Spin Kick)

-This is another one of Mai's Counterattacks. However, unlike the SP
version, it's not as great. It lags on recovery time and startup time a
little more than the SP version.

SP + SK (Drop Flipkick)

-This is Mai's Blowback attack. Not bad, but it lags on both recovery
and startup time, making it hard to use. It's far better to use in the
air rather than on the ground, if you can help it.

--CROUCHING MOVES--

LP (Forward Fan Smack)

-This move comes out very quick and moves Mai closer to the
opponent with each swing of her fan. Add to that it has zero recovery
time, and you have a pretty nice move.

D-F + LP (Fan Uppercut)

-This move is a bit like the Side-Step Up + SP move, but it doesn't
knock the opponent back. It can be blocked and countered rather
easily, so don't use it too often. Best to use against airborne opponents.

SP (Right Elbow)

-This move is decent, but has bad recovery time. Only use it if you're
doing a Stylish Move that requires it.

LK (Floor Kick)

-The reach on this move isn't astounding, but it's decent for poking.
Other than that, nothing special about it.

SK (Backleg Kick)

-Mai's trip move. Comes out a little fast, but can easily be jumped or
blocked. Wait for your opponent to dash at your to use it.

--JUMPING MOVES--

LP (Fan Smack)

-Same as with the Crouching LP, except you don't move forward at
all unless you jumped forward. Still, good for keeping opponents away
who are trying to pressure you.

SP (Fan Swing)

-Even better than the Fan Smack is the Fan Swing, which covers more
ground and comes out a little slower than the Fan Smack. Use it to
keep rushing opponents away.

LK (Aerial Knee)

-Nothing spectacular about this move in the slightest bit. It doesn't
even have that great of a range. However, if you can connect with it,
follow up with a Deadly Ninja Bees or Dragon Flame Romp immediately.

SK (Aerial Kick)

-Much better than the Aerial Knee. Has longer reach, so it's good for
keeping rushing opponents away. Great to combo into just about any
move.

SP + SK (Double Kick)

-Mai's aerial Blowback attack. This is the move of choice to get rushing
opponents away from you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
VI. Command Moves

--Puny Plum Punt (AIR)................D + SK--

This move has a few good uses to it, when used in two situations. The
first, and probably sneakiest and best way, to use this move is when
you jump back from your opponent and Mai is coming down out of the
air. When you input the command for the move then, Mai will come down
at the opponent, which is good for a surprise attack. If you input the
command for the move when you jump (and not while you are coming
down), then Mai will fly across the screen. Nothing better than beating
the opponent with Mai's sweet, sweet ass.....

Spinning Wheel...........................F + SK
(During Swallow Saturnallia or Red Crane Strut)

--Swallow Saturnallia.....................F + LK--

This move isn't all that useful unless you use it in conjunction with
Mai's Stylish Moves. By itself, it can be easily blocked and countered.
If you try combining it with moves like Red Crane Strut and Dragon
Flame Romp, it becomes a bit more useful, but still can leave Mai
vulnerable to attack. Good to surprise any opponent who tries to push
Mai back though.

--Red Crane Strut..........................D-F + LK--

This is a great move, whether or not you combine it with any other moves
or not. This is great to pull out after you've used several mid or high
attacks in a row or when you need to counterattack and push your
opponent back away from you some. Good for knocking the opponent
down and comboing into a Solar Flash Dance.

--Mammoth Windmill Drop (AIR)
(Darin Fuusha Otoshi)
.......................................................D + LP--

This move is only useful if you're opponent is underneath you or
trying to jump at you. Great for knocking them down to the ground, but
other than that, there's not much use for it...

--Floating Feathers (AIR)............D + LK--

This move is a pretty decent stall move. You can easily trick opponents
who are trying to constantly rush Mai with this move, as it makes her
come down from the air slower and it knocks the opponent to the ground,
which is good for a chain to Solar Flash Dance. You can even go into
a Stylish Move right from it if it hits. The downside is that if it's blocked,
it leaves Mai wide-open to punishment.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
VII. Special Moves

All of Mai's special command inputs that don't require Power Guages.

--Folding Fan Fandango...............QCF + P
(Kachou Sen)--

Mai simply tosses a fan at her opponent. LP version moves slow,
SP version moves fast. All in all, this move doesn't do much damage
at all, but if you use the LP version, you can pretty much run right
behind it and chain that into a combo of your choice. Good against
opponents who are jumping towards you from a distance, but other
than that, there isn't any real use for it.

--Rising Dragon Flamefest...........DPF + K
(Hishou Ryuu'en Jin)--

Mai's newest move. Mai does a backwards somersault while engulfed
in flames and hits the opponent with her "tail". Great as an Anti-Air and
Rush countermove, but if blocked, leaves her a little vulnerable to
attacks. Does a bit more damage than Folding Fan Fandango does.
LK version moves super-fast, while the SK version moves slower but
deals more damage. Plus, the SK version leaves Mai open if blocked, so
use it cautiously.

--Nocturnal Plover........................QCB + K--

Mai takes her fan and takes a full swing at the opponent. Good for
stopping rushing opponents and aerial opponents, but it's not that
great (even worse than Folding Fan Fandango, as Nocturnal Plover
really isn't that good to begin with). LK version moves fast, while the
SK version moves rather slow and is easy to block and counter.
However, if you use this move, try comboing a Stylish Move off of it
or use something like Dragon Flame Romp, Rising Dragon Flamefest,
or Deadly Ninja Bees to back it up.

--Dragon Flame Romp...................QCB + P
(Ryuu Enbu)--

One of Mai's best known attacks in the series. Mai simply twirls around
and hits the opponent with her "tails" that are engulfed in flames. Great
for countering purposes. The LP version is extremely fast, while the SP
version moves pretty slow. However, the SP version is the only version
that can be chained into the Heavenly Serpent's Tail Swing move, so
keep that in mind. Try chaining Stylish Move 6 or 12, or Solar Flash
Dance or Nocturnal Plover off of this move to deal more damage (LP
version only though)

--Heavenly Serpent's Tail Swing
(during Strong Dragon Flame Romp)
........................................................HCF + P--

Remember, this can ONLY be used if you use the SP version of Dragon
Flame Romp. Mai twirls around an additional time (a couple, to be precise)
while her "tails" are still engulfed in flames. If this move connects, it
knocks the opponent back away to the ground. Great for surprising the
opponent if you don't use it that much, and also good for Rush-down
players. Also safe on block as well.

--Solar Flash Dance........................Dx2 + P
(Kagerou no Mai)--

This is by far the most broken Anti-Air move in the game. Mai puts her
fan in her mouth, puts her hands together, and engulfs herself in a pillar
of flame. This move hits up to 5 times, and can be chained infinitely if
the opponent does not know how to use Fallbreaker or Roll correctly,
or if at all. Also, you can chain this move into many other moves, those
being:

Stylish Move 17
Solar Flash Dance
Dragon Flame Romp to Heavenly Serpent's Tail Swing
Nocturnal Plover
Stylish Move 6

--Flying Squirrel (AIR)...................QCF + P
(Musabi no Mai)--

This is a pretty good move, and is another trademark Mai attack. Mai
simply flips around in the air once and flies downwards at the enemy
headfirst. Good for when your opponent is trying to push Mai back,
but this move also has a lot of downsides to it. One is that it leaves
Mai wide-open to a LOT of attacks. Two is that many, many players
will already expect this move to come out a lot, and will most likely
be wary of it and know how to block it. Last is the fact that if blocked,
it can leave Mai open for a very brief time. However, this last downside
can be made into an advantage, as you can easily combo into Stylish
Move 6 or 7 from it if blocked. Still, this move has potential by itself,
as long as you use it when you jump back away from the opponent and
don't overuse it. When it hits, it'll knock the opponent to the ground
as well, so keep that in mind.

--Deadly Ninja Bees.......................HCB + K
(Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi)--

Mai's signature move. Mai does a cartwheel, then lunges at the opponent
with her elbow. Both versions of the move makes her fly across the
screen, so it doesn't matter which one you use. If blocked, it leaves
Mai open as usual, so keep that in mind when you try to use it. It's
best against rushing opponents, and worst against aerial opponents.
Not much else to say about this move...

----------------------------------------------------------------------
VIII. Super Special Moves (DOA Thrashing)

This section is to the description and usage of Mai's DOA Thrashing,
otherwise better known to players as Super Specials.

--Blossom Storm.............................QCF x2 + P
(1 Power Guage)--

Mai opens her fan and rushes at the opponent. If the move connects, Mai
goes into a whirlwind with two fans. This move is great just for the fact that
if it connects at any time (except for when the opponent is flying in the air),
it'll automatically come out. Good times to use this move are when the
opponent is coming down from an attack, after a Solar Flash Dance, or
when the opponent is lying on the ground. Do note that if the move is
blocked, it leaves Mai wide-open to attacks, and it's easy to tell when this
move is about to come out, as it has some lag time before it activates. Does
decent damage though. This move can be Sabakied....

--Phoenix Dance.............................QCBx2 + K
(1 Power Guage)--

One of Mai's signature Super Specials. Mai leaps into the air and spins
towards the enemy while engulfed in flames. This move can be easily
blocked if your opponent sees it coming, and if you use it too close to
the opponent, then it'll just go right over their head, leaving Mai wide-open.
It only hits once or twice against aerial opponents, so don't bother using
it against them. Does more damage than Blossom Storm.

--Super Deadly Ninja Bees...........QCF, HCB + K
(2 Power Guages)
(Chou Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi)--

Mai's signature Super Special. Mai does a Deadly Ninja Bees while
engulfed in flames. Great for rushing opponents or when an opponent
is trying to attack and isn't close enough, and it hits up to 7-8 times,
depending on how close you are to the opponent when you use the move.
Pretty good to combo off of a Folding Fan Fandango or Dragon Flame
Romp. Even stronger than Blossom Storm and Phoenix Dance. Then again,
it is Mai's Level 2 Super Special. This move can be Sabakied....

--Blossom Blizzard.........................Ch. D, D, DF
(3 Power Guages)--

Mai's newest Super Special and strongest. Mai jumps onto her hands
and flies at the opponent feet-first, doing a drill like attack while engulfed
in flames. The last hit is what does the most damage, so don't worry if
any of the other hits miss (although they help factor in the damage that
this move does...). This is great to try and chain off of Folding Fan
Fandango (if it hits) or a Dragon Flame Romp, if possible. It's almost as
easy to block though as Blossom Storm, as it has almost the same start-up
animation. However, if the opponent does block the attack, then their
Guard Guage will be severely damaged, as it does about 7-10 bars of
their Guard Guage! If it is blocked, then you won't have to worry about
being struck back, as the recovery on this move is astounding. However,
this move can be Sabakied....

----------------------------------------------------------------------
IX. Stylish Combos

All of Mai's Stylish Moves in detail, just for you. Here's how it works:

-Stylish Move
-[Stylish Move Name]
-Stylish Move Description
-Rating (Out of 5)

1) D-F + LP, SP, SK
[Fan Uppercut, Open Fan Forehand, Crushing Heel]
-Not bad, but the Fan Uppercut can be blocked rather quickly. If that
hits though, the rest of the combo will come out rather easily except
for Crushing Heel, which has a little bit of slow startup.
RATING-2/5

2) SK x3, SP + SK
[Triple High Kick, Drop Flipkick]
-This is another move that isn't that bad, but can easily be blocked and
countered. With other moves that are even better, you'll want to put
this one on hold until you can launch it at the right moment.
RATING-2/5

3) SK x2, D + SK x2
[Double High Kick, Low Kick, Slide]
-This is a great move just for mind games. However, the Slide can be
a bit of problem if blocked, as it leaves Mai wide-open to counterattacks.
Still, not bad by any means. Mix this up with the previous Stylish Move,
and you can easily confuse your opponents.
RATING-2.5/5

4) SK x2, D + SK, F + SK
[Double High Kick, Low Kick, Swallow Saturnalia]
-Even better than the previous move due to being able to go right into
Swallow Saturnalia and not worry about being wide-open to attacks if
blocked. Great to immediately combo into Stylish Move 6 or 12.
RATING-3.5/5

5) SK x3
[Double High Kick, Aerial Flip]
-This move is great just because you can avoid low attacks and go
right into either Puny Plum Punt, Floating Feathers, or Flying Squirrel
Furiante.
RATING-3.5/5

6) D + LK, LK, SP x3
[Floor Kick, High Kick, Fan Hand Fist, Dragon Flame Romp, Powerful
Forward Fan Mid-Stab)
-One of Mai's best Stylish Moves, and the best one to spam against
CPU opponents. It has great potential for custom combos, and it's
good due to the first attack being low and the rest mid.
RATING-4/5

7) D + LK, LK, SP, D + SK
[Floor Kick, High Kick, Fan Hand Fist, Backleg Sweep]
-This is somewhat weaker than the previous Stylish Move, but has
its uses. You can mix this up with the previous Stylish Move for mind
games, but watch for the Backleg Sweep being blocked, as it'll leave
Mai open.

8) D + LK, SP, SK
[Floor Kick, Right Elbow, Aerial Flip]
-Not bad, as you can mix this up into many other moves and combo
them into many other moves. Several options here as long as Mai
isn't hit while in Aerial Flip.
RATING-4/5

9) F + SP, SP x2, SK
[Right Hook, Fan Hand Fist, Dragon Flame Romp, Swallow Saturnalia]
-This is almost as good as Stylish Move 6, but every hit is mid. Good
against rushing opponents that are blocked or if you need to get a
little closer to the opponent. Also great for Guard Crashing your
opponent as well.
RATING-3.5/5

10) F + SP, SP x2, D + SK
[Right Hook, Fan Hand Fist, Dragon Flame Romp, Sweep Kick]
-The only difference here than from the previous Stylish Move is the
last attack, which can leave Mai open if blocked. Still, great for
playing mind-games with opponents if you mix it up with Stylish Move
9.
RATING-3.3/5

11) F + SP, SP, SK
[Right Hook, Fan Hand Fist, Aerial Flip]
-Once again, you have many options once you get to Aerial Flip.
Just watch for the first two attacks being blocked, and if they are,
once you reach Aerial Flip, go for a Puny Plum Punt or Flying Squirrel
Furiante immediately.
RATING-3/5

12) B + SP, SP, SK, D + LK
[Open Fan Backhand, Dragon Flame Romp, Deadly Ninja Cartwheel,
Slide]
-The first two attacks come out pretty quick, but the Deadly Ninja
Cartwheel (which is Deadly Ninja Bees, except without the lunging)
can be countered pretty easily. The Slide move is great for tricking
an opponent who isn't used to Mai. Still a pretty good Stylish Move
to use.
RATING-4/5

13) B + SP, SP, SK, F + SK
[Open Fan Backhand, Dragon Flame Romp, Deadly Ninja Cartwheel,
Forward Jump]
-The difference from the previous move is the Forward Jump, which
leaves many optiions available to the player. Use it wisely!
RATING-4.5/5

14) SK x3, SP x2
[Leap Kick, High Kick, LK Deadly Ninja Bees, Stagment Fan, Powerful
Open Fan Backhand]
-A decent move, if the LK Deadly Ninja Bees isn't blocked. The final
attack will knock the opponent back, so keep that in mind before you
decide on which moves you'll do afterwards.
RATING-2/5

15) SK x4
[Leap Kick, High Kick, LK Deadly Ninja Bees, Aerial Flip]
-Yet another Stylish Move that has many options available to it after
it's used. However, keep in mind that if the Deadly Ninja Bees is blocked
and you go into the Aerial Flip, then Mai is pretty much defenseless
unless you can pull a move off real quick.
RATING-3/5

16) F + SK, SK x4
[Rising Knee, Quick Kick, Aerial Leg Axe, Power Backkick, Aerial
Flip Kick]
-This is another great move, but can easily be countered if used at
either the wrong distance or blocked completely, as the last hit will
leave her wide-open.
RATING-2.5/5

17) D + SK, SP x2
[Backleg Kick, Fan Uppercut, Dual Fan Spin]
-A very nice move, as long as the Dual Fan Spin is NOT blocked, as
Mai is vulnerable to everything then. Great for wrecking havoc on
Guard too if block, and great to chain off of a Solar Flash Dance if the
opponent doesn't get up right away.
RATING-3.5/5

18) (During Jump) LK, SK
[Aerial Knee, Blowback Aerial Kick]
-A fairly useless move, as the SP + SK version does the exact same
thing.
RATING-1/5

X. Special Custom-made Combos

Here, I will go into advanced combos that you can use to crush your
opponent. However, note that you'll need to know how every move of
Mai's works in order to pull these off.

Here is the format for this section:

-Combo Move
-Description
-When to use
-Rating

1) Stylish Move 6 to Solar Flash Dance to Blossom Storm to Stylish
Move 17
Description: Stylish Move 6 is the key for this combo to even work in
the first place. Start with that, then when your opponent is knocked to a
wall, use Solar Flash Dance to throw them in the air. You'll need to Super
Cancel Solar Flash Dance into Blossom Storm, then when the opponent
is on the ground (and not getting up), use Stylish Move 17 to inflict more
damage to them.
When to use: When opponent is trying to pressure Mai, when opponent
is trapped in corner or by a wall
Rating: 4/5

2) Stylish Move 13 to Dragon Flame Romp to Heavenly Serpent's Tail
Swing to Blossom Storm to Solar Flash Dance to Stylish Move 17
Description: You don't really need Stylish Move 13 to pull off the rest of
the combo, but it helps in adding in damage. Whether or not you get that
part to work, just go right into the Dragon Flame Romp to Heavenly
Serpent's Tail Swing. If you want to mix it up just a little, then skip the
Heavenly Serpent's Tail Swing and go straight to Blossom Storm (remember,
you'll need at least 2 Power Guages to pull this off). From there, you can
do Stylish Move 17, or if you really want to tack on more damage, and your
opponent doesn't know how to utilize Fallbreaker or Roll, then go into a
Solar Flash Dance first, THEN do Stylish Move 17.
When to use: If opponent missed an attack, if you Side Stepped your opponent,
if opponent is trapped by a wall or corner.
Rating: 3.5/5

3) Deadly Ninja Bees to Solar Flash Dance to Dragon Flame Romp to
Heavenly Serpent's Tail Swing to LP Nocturnal Plover to Blossom Storm
to Stylish Move 17
Description: This is a tricky one to pull off since you HAVE to have your
opponent either next to a wall or in a corner to even pull off. You'll also
want some distance between you and your opponent, so that the Deadly
Ninja Bees won't give the opponent much time to recover, and even then,
it's easy to block the rest of the combo. If you get the Deadly Ninja Bees
to work, then immediately go into the rest of the combo. Nocturnal Plover
can be skipped if you want, but that's up to you.
When to use: Only when opponent is near wall or in a corner.
Rating: 3/5

4) Folding Fan Fandango to Flying Squirrel Furiante to Dragon Flame
Romp to Super Deadly Ninja Bees
Description: This is a risky combo to use, since if the Folding Fan or Flying
Squirrel is blocked, then the rest of the combo is ruined. If you do somehow
manage to get one or both moves to connect, then immediately throw out
Dragon Flame Romp and Super Cancel into Super Deadly Ninja Bees. Quite
a powerful combo, but hard to pull off.
When to use: When opponent is far away, then rush opponent down after
Folding Fan Fandango.
Rating: 2.5/5

5) LP Folding Fan Fandango to LP Dragon Flame Romp to Stylish Move 6
to Blossom Blizzard
Description: You need to get the Folding Fan to connect, and rush your
opponent down while it's still moving, then pull out the Dragon Flame
Romp quickly. When Dragon Flame Romp ends, go into Stylish Move 6
WHILE charging up the Blossom Blizzard. Hopefully, if you've charged the
Blossom Blizzard up long enough near the end of the Stylish Move and
then go into the motion for Blossom Blizzard, you'll be able to pull the move
off right at the end or near the end of the Stylish Move. If the Stylish
Move is blocked, then consider the Blossom Blizzard blocked.
When to use: Far away, then rush opponent down, near a wall or corner.
Rating: 4.5/5

XI. Strategies for Mai

There are several ways you can use Mai in this game. However, as usual,
Mai is based more on quick attacks and combos than anything else, and
typically has a weaker defense and lower vitality than the rest of the cast.
Here are just some of the ways you can try to use her. Note, however, that
the strategies listed here may, and probably will, differ from the strategies
that you can come up with.

--OFFENSE--

This is Mai's strong point. You'll want to utilize most of Mai's Stylish Moves,
as well as her Folding Fan Fandango and Deadly Ninja Bees (when she's
far away from the opponent). Up close, use Rising Dragon Flamefest
(especially when the opponent is in the air), Dragon Flame Romp, Heavenly
Serpent's Tail Swing, and Solar Flash Dance. For Anti-Air purposes, there's
nothing better than Solar Flash Dance, but Rising Dragon Flamefest works
just as well. The best Stylish Moves that you can use are Stylish Moves 6
(which can be comboed into Dragon Flame Romp to Heavenly Serpent's
Tail Swing or Solar Flash Dance to Blossom Storm), Stylish Move 2 (which
is good for knocking the opponent back if you need to), and Stylish Move
12 (which is good for tricking the opponent). Your main focus on Super
Specials will most likely be Blossom Storm and Super Deadly Ninja Bees,
but don't neglect Phoenix Dance if you're a little farther away from your
opponent and Blossom Blizzard, which you can use to combo off of a
Dragon Flame Romp.

--DEFENSE--

Not really Mai's strongest point, and probably one of her weakest, but you
can still make it a pretty good style to use. You'll want to try and use
Guard Cancels if you find yourself being pressured, and don't forget Sabaki,
if you can use them right. For Specials, Folding Fan Fandango is the best
you're going to get when it comes to attacking, since it's her only long
range move that she has. If the opponent gets too close, use Rising Dragon
Flamefest, Dragon Flame Romp to Heavenly Serpent's Tail Swing, Flying
Squirrel Furiante, or Solar Flash Dance to get them off of you. Blossom
Blizzard is what you want to aim for as your Super Special move, as it has
invincibility on startup, and it's her strongest Super Special to boot.

--MIX-UP--

This is a bit tricky to do with Mai, but she's actually decent at doing this
style. Stylish Moves 6 and 7 are great for mix-up strategies, and can be
mixed-up with a lot of moves, such as Deadly Ninja Bees, Super Deadly
Ninja Bees, Blossom Storm, Solar Flash Dance, Phoenix Dance, Dragon
Flame Romp, or Rising Dragon Flamefest. You can try to use Stylish Move
8 and chain that into either Flying Squirrel Furiante, Puny Plum Punt, or
Floating Feathers. Mammoth Windmill Drop is nice if the opponent is
trying to rush you and you don't want to risk using Flying Squirrel Furiante
or Puny Plum Punt. Red Crane Strut is also a nice way to trick the opponent
as well, especially if you mix that with Stylish Move 16 or 14. It also works
well when comboed into Blossom Storm or Solar Flash Dance. Find out
some strategies on your own and see what works for you though.

*Mai looks around confused*

--Vs. Terry Bogard--

*Mai and Terry are looking at each other. Mai waves her closed fan
at Terry*

Mai: "Hey, big boy! How ya doing?"

*Terry then shakes his head while looking at the ground, then looks back
up at Mai*

Terry: "And since when did I become your big brother?"

--Normal Entrance--

*Mai walks into the arena, camera focuses on her chest, then to her
face*

Mai: Come on, big boy!

*Mai winks as she says this, then gets in her fighting stance.

--Victory Pose #1--

*Mai tosses her fan over her head and catches it with her other hand and
stands straight up*

Mai: Yes! Japan's best! (In Japanese, this translates to "Yo! Nippon ichi!",
which is Mai's trademark)

*Mai walks towards the camera, then leans over*

Mai: I'm sorry. Humor me!

--Provacation--

-Story Mode-

-Before Luise Meyrink-

*Luise is walking into the arena as Mai is standing there waiting for her*

Mai: "You finally show up? For a rookie-you've got a lot of nerve, making
me wait so long."

Luise: "I'm sorry, what's the difference? Does it matter if you're a rookie
in this tournament?"

Luise: "What about you? Are you prepared to go on? Aren't you scared
of the opponents....who await you?"

Mai: "Am I prepared?"

Mai: "Don't know what I'm getting myself into? Is that what you're
saying? I'm pretty sure I'm ready, rookie."

*Luise shakes her head*

Luise: "...warning you JUST may not be enough."

Luise: "You should lose to me here. It's for your own good."

*Luise then gets in her fighting stance. Mai gets in her fighting stance*

Mai: "Funny! Maybe you should take your own advice!"

-After Luise Meyrink-

*Mai looks down at Luise*

Mai: "Well, this is it. Good luck there, rookie!"

*Luise looks up at Mai*

Luise: "This is my final warning. If you value your life, you must leave
immediately."

Mai: "I don't understand....why the hell are you saying that?"

*Mai starts to walk away, then looks back at Luise*

Mai: "A ninja who fears death is not a ninja. You just don't get it, do you?"

*Mai then winks and walks on to her final battle*

-Before Jivatma-

*Mai looks around at her surroundings*

Mai: "I was expecting something more....it seems too quiet. Is this really
the finals?"

Voice: "That's right. This is the final stage. And your battle is about to end
here."

*Mai stares as Jivatma comes walking towards her from behind a pillar*

Mai: "You're my...."

Jivatma: "Uh-huh. Along with being your opponent., I'm also this little
shindig's sponsor. It's very nice to make your acquaintance."

*Jivatma then bows*

Jivatma: "I'm Jivatma, leader of Kusiel."

Mai: "Kusiel...? What is that?"

Jivatma: "The secret syndicate Addes rules this planet's underworld. Me?
I'm just one of the pencil-pushers that works there."

Mai: "Hmm...I see."

Mai: "I think I get what Luise Meyrink was trying to tell me."

Jivatma: "What is it that you think you get?"

Mai: "That you are nothing but evil scum. Why go to all this trouble?"

Jivatma: "Simply put to gather the most powerful of specimens on this
and let's leave it at that."

Jivatma: "Of course, regardless of your appearance, we are only
concerned with the strength and abilities of your physcial form."

Mai: "Whoa! That's a little bold, considering we just met. But regardless
you're definently not my type."

*Mai then points her fan at Jivatma*

-After Jivatma-

*Mai looks down at Jivatma*

Mai: "Man, you're pathetic, aren't you Mr. Sponsor?"

*Jivatma laughs*

Jivatma: "I acknowledge your strength. Today, defeat is mine."

Mai: "You said today? Do you really think there'll be a second time?
Are you serious?"

Jivatma: "Hmph, one day, the truth will horrify you. We are immortal."

*Jivatma teleports. Mai looks confused at where Jivatma was at*

Mai: "He disappeared! No way!"

*The building starts to collapse, and Mai looks around confused*

Mai: "Oh no!! You can't be serious! Where's my prize money?!"

*Mai then runs out of the building*

-Ending-

*Mai is on the ground, looking at the ruins of the final stage*

Mai: "Aww..with the prize money, I thought Andy and I could have a cozy
vacation together...."

Mai: "Hey, but where is Andy anyways. I know he needs time alone,
but at times like this, he could at least come and support me. Why isn't
he here?"

Mai: "..The more I think about, the more it pisses me off...! I'm starting to
think this is all Andy's fault!"

Mai: "Argh...this is crazy! I can't believe this guy vanished! Not only
that, no prize money! This is Andy's fault!!"

*Mai stomps the ground and tosses her fan to the ground in anger*

Mai: "I'm officially pissed! I'll make that next time, both Andy and I enter
the KOF tournament together!"

Mai: "That's it. I'm just going to bitch and moan until he agrees."

*Mai walks off, and Terry walks out from behind the statue and whistles*

Terry: "Man, chicks sure are scary, I'm tellin; ya!"

*Terry picks up the fan that Mai threw to the ground and watches Mai
walk away"

Terry: "I understand Andy being concerned and all, but I didn't even have
to check up on her."

*Terry then looks up at the sky*

Terry: "She's not the kind of chick who's happy being protected by a man.
You're gonna have a hard time, Andy."

         ----FOR THE HARDCORE MAI FANS!---

This section is here just for those who want to know everything about Mai.
Do note, however, that I'm still missing some data. If you would like to
contribute any data to this section, feel free to email me at one of my emails
listed at the beginning of this FAQ, or you can AIM me at AnkokuRyu.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I. Mai's Appearance

Brown eyes and reddish brown hair, tied back in a long ponytail (reaches to
about to the middle of her back) by an ornamental hairpin, and has a slim
figure (though a very busty chest area, which can be seen quite easily due
to her having her dress open). Wears a traditional Shiranui-style outfit, which
is red with white trimming (wears her blouse open, and the area around her
arms are wide open as well), and also wears a white kimono-obi, which has
one long "tail" with a big red ball attached close to the end of them.
The white trimming around her sleeves (which appear to be rope in a way)
also wrap around her back as well). Wears tabi socks with what appears to
be like ropes around her feet, and wears short gloves. Always carries a
fan with her, but whenever she uses Folding Fan Fandango (Kachou Sen),
she pulls another fan out of her blouse. Has not changed this outfit in any
of her incarnations, nor her appearance, though in Maximum Impact and
in King of Fighters 2006, Mai has an alternate outfit.

-Alternate Outfit (King of Fighters: Maximum Impact and 2006 only)

Same bodily features, except her hair is now short and cut. Wears a black
outfit (blouse is still worn open) and black short shorts. Still wears the
same gloves and tabi socks. Wears a red scarf around her neck.

--When you are using Mai--

(Before fighting Bob Wilson)
Bob: Yes! Full contact with Mai Shiranui! My life is now complete!
(After beating Bob)
Mai: Thanks for showmin me about Cooperia. Quite an impressive
way of fighting. Not!

(Before fighting Joe)
Joe: Oh, Mai, you too? I thought the secret scrolls were, well...a secret.
(After beating Joe)
Mai: What do you mean, secret scrolls? C'mon, Joe, cough it up or I'll
tell Andy.

(Before fighting Blue Mary)
Blue Mary: What a sad case. Ok, I guess I'll have to show you my
full power, cutey!
(After beating Mary)
Mai: You pack quite a punch sister, I have a lot to learn about my own
feminity.

(Before fighting Franco Bash)
Franco: My fight does not concern you. Leave, or I will be forced to
kill. Deal?
(After beating Franco)
Mai: Hey, aren't you Franco Bash? The current King of Kick? How
about an autograph?

(First encounter with Yamazaki)

Yamazaki: A beautiful babe like you shouldn't be in a place like this.
Too many thugs. Heh, heh. It's a good thing that I'm not a thug. Heh,
heh. Hah, hah, haaaaaah!
(After beating Yamazaki)
Yamazaki: Heh, heh, heh. Not bad for a bodacious broad. Later, babe!
Mai: Hey, get your male chauvinist backside back here! Just who
does he think he is? Hey, where did Andy go?

(Before fighting Mai)
Mai: Oh no! You've copied my new costume too!
(After beating Mai)
Mai: Oh, take a rest, slimy!

(Before fighting Andy)
Andy: W....What!? Mai, what in the name of the Great Ice Cream
Salesman are you doing here?
(After beating Andy)
Mai: C'mon, Andy. Joe told me about the scrolls. What's your
involvement in this?

(Before fighting Hon Fu)
Hon Fu: Cheng told me to watch out for you. As a matter of fact,
I could watch you forever. Hmm.
(After beating Hon Fu)
Mai: I don't know what Cheng told you about me, but tell him to
keep his filthy mouth shut!

(Before fighing Sosaku)
Sosaku: So the last Shiranui is a girl. I'm not that unlucky after all.
Yeeees!
(After beating Sosaku)
Mai: Mochizuki, huh? My grandfather would whine about you guys
all the time. Not so tough, huh.

(Before fighting Terry)
Terry: What are you upset about? I haven't teased Andy. Well, not
recently, that is.
(After beating Terry)
Mai: So you must be the guy who blabbed to Andy about the
scrolls. Bigmouth!

(Before fighting Geese)
Geese: Even if you are a woman--and a fine specimen at that--I can't
forgive my enemies!
(After beating Geese)
Mai: You're Geese Howard?! Andy said you bit the big one and here
you are....whoops, were.

(Second encounter with Yamazaki)
Yamazaki: Too bad such a beautiful babe like you has chosen such
a line of work as this.
(After beating Yamazaki)
Mai: Okay, pal. Hand over the scrolls. I know you have them in your
slimy clutches.
[Yamazaki collapses to the floor]
Yamazaki: Sorry, hon. If you want them, you'll have to hop on over
to Delta Park. Good luck, toots.

=Before final battles=

[In a dark room, a young boy dressed in ancient chinese clothing is
standing]
???: Mai Shiranui....Why not just kick back and let's make ourselves
comfortable!
[The boy forms a ball of energy]
Mai: What in...? Hey!

[Mai is teleported to Delta Park]

-Battle before Jin Chonshu-

[Mai stands in a pitch black room]
Mai: What is going on here?
[The boy from before appears and speaks]
???: Wow, you sure took care of Yamazaki. A true successor to the
House of Shiranui!
[The room lights up, there is a large door behind the boy]
Chonshu: However, your puny 400 year history comes to an end in
a moment. The strength and blood of 2200 years strengthens my body
and energizes my limbs! After I find the three secret scrolls, the Jin
line will become immortal! All my enemies shall feel my wrath. The
world will quake in the shadow of my power!

--When fighting against Mai--

-When you are Terry-

Mai: Terry, baby! Don't tell me a slab of beefcake like you holds the
secret scrolls! (Before fight)
(After fight) Terry: First, don't call me goldilocks! Second, cover up
that cleavage. Have you no shame, Mai?

-When you are Andy-

Mai: Hey, Andy, tell me about the scrolls. If you try not to, it's
Knuckle Fest '95 time.
(After fight) Andy: Mai, this is my hometown. I have to save it from
the evil that waits to be released!

-When you are Joe-

Mai: Not you too, Joe! I don't want to go back to Japan! I want
action...and pizza!
(After fight) Joe: You saw you're action, Mai. Go home fast before
Andy and Terry on my case!

-When you are Sosaku-

Mai: You look like a Mochizuki in that costume. Hey, you are a
Mochizuki!
(After fight) Sosaku: For ages the Mochizukis have quelled evil.
Now it's time for us to have fun!

-When you are Blue Mary-

Mai: You've already lost in the beauty department. Care to continue
your losing streak?
(After fight) Mary: I hate losing streaks, and you aren't so beautiful
anymore, toots.

-When you are Hon Fu-

Mai: What? Yamazaki? Hey, speak English, fool! I can't hear a thing
you're trying to say!
(After fight) Hon Fu: Maybe you'll understand me better now, eh,
toots?

-When you are Bob Wilson-

Mai: Cooperia athletes have a habit of disappearing around here.
Be warned, and listen good.
(After fight) Bob: Mai! Hey, Mai! Wake up! You okay? If I treat you
to dinner, promise not to get mad?

-When you are Franco Bash-

Mai: You must be a friend of those guys in the black suits. Pass over
the secret scrolls!!!
(After fight) Franco: This place is not for a woman! Go back home, take
off your shoes, and stay in the kitchen!

-When you are Geese-

Mai: You're Geese Howard? Those three guys are in for trouble after

(before Finals)

Terry: !!!
Andy: Iori Yagami... in the flesh!
Iori: Well if it isn't the mangey mutts from Southtown!
Jun: It's a pleasure to meet some regulars like you. ......But, from here
on, it's our turn. Could you let us by now? Beauty before age you know.
Mai: That might work on the men but that's asking a bit much girl.
Miu: ......Don't bother us.
Terry: I can see you're in a rush but we've got our reasons too you know. I
can't just let you pass without objecting.
Iori: Are you in a hurry to die?

(after Finals)

Terry: How did you know? We aren't called regulars for nothing you
know.
Iori: You said it...
Jun: W-wait...!
Mai: Not bad for a first timer but you've got a long way to go.

(before first boss fight)

Mai: I'm too excited for words!
Terry: Hey now, this ain't no game girly.
?: My congrats on reaching the finals.
Mai: Are you the organizer of this event?
?: The name's Gustav Munchausen. ......Let's take some time and get
acquainted, shall we?
Terry: Gustav? Were you the one pulling all the strings in kidnapping
the kids?
?: Oh... I see you've done your homework.
Andy: Cut the nonchalance! What have you done with the children?
?: They served their purpose for me... It's not your concern.
Mai: Not our concern!?
?: Besides, let's get the finals under way shall we? This will be your final
fight!
Terry: Huh? What could that be?
Andy: I know that wind... No way, not Goenitz!?
Mai: No way is right... Goenitz was defeated before, right?
Terry: It can't be Goenitz. What the hell is it?
?: This boy is one of the Orochi's four kings. That powerful wind is to
revive Goenitz via this spirit channeling.
Andy: Spirit channeling?
?: Fight him if you can. As your mighty mental powers come up against
him, our Orochi blood only grows stronger.
Terry: And so you kidnapped the children, right?
?: Yes. Because the fear in the hearts of young children laid a foundation
to manifest this new wind of terror.
Mai: Now you've done it!
?: You said you didn't care right? Regardless, this is where I win and you
die. ......Well, get to it, Sinobu!
Sinobu: ...Don't order me around.
?: Who do you think you are?
Sinobu: I'm not your puppet plaything...
Mai: H-hey you, simmer down now!
Sinobu: Stupid adults... Stupid everything.. The ten and three sacred
treasures, the Orochi's, everything... ...I'll destroy them all!
Andy: What are you saying!?
Terry: We don't have the time to think about all this!

-Capcom Vs. SNK 1/2-

kind and graceful!"
"I am 'the best female Ninja' in Japan! Hee hee hee!"
"This is the Shirnaui style Ninjitsu!"

"You must have been intimidated by my strength,
attractiveness, and beauty!"

-SVC Chaos: SNK Vs. Capcom-

back."

extending arms bit..." (Vs. Dhalsim)

*All of these are before battles

(vs. Kyo)

[Mai:] Kyo! Hey... have you seen Andy?
[Kyo:] Hmm. Nope. ...Geez! Talk about one love sick puppy!
[Mai:] What did you say? Hey, bub, are you hiding something?
[Kyo:] Who me? No!

(vs. Iori)

[Mai:] That won't do! Stunned by my beauty's no excuse for losing!
[Iori:] Maiden... You dare insult me?
[Mai:] Get ready, gloomy gus, cause here I come!
[Iori:] Little one... Know your place!

(vs. Ryo)

[Ryo:] Well, well... Let's see this mighty Shiranui power, shall we?
[Mai:] Always the cocky one. Very well, then. Bring it on, beefcake!

(vs. Terry)

[Mai:] I can't find Andy anywhere around here. Terry!
[Terry:] A, Andy? I'm not his keeper.
[Mai:] ...Terry, you're hiding something.

(vs. Mai)

[Mai:] No matter how much you look like me, you still won't convince
Andy!
[Mai:] So you're the one! You've got my Andy!
[Mai:] Get ready, honey! You'll feel my scorn!
[Mai:] You'll never get Andy!

(vs. Kasumi)

[Kasumi:] Oh, Mai... Keeping fit as ever, I see.
[Mai:] Love is the secret.
[Kasumi:] ...Love. Hard love, right?
[Mai:] Hey! Just what are you hinting at? These are real!
[Kasumi:] What? Huh?

(vs. Kim)

[Mai:] Oh, Kim! Have you seen Andy?
[Kim:] Not hide nor hair.
[Mai:] No? Well, later!
[Kim:] Hold on there.
[Kim:] Looks like I'm going to have to teach you about being more of
a lady.
[Mai:] Say what?!

(vs. Mr. Karate)

[Mai:] Oh! Mr. Sakazaki. Have you seen Andy?
[Mr. Karate:] The name is Mr. Karate! I know not this Sakazaki.
[Mai:] Is that so? So, what about Andy?
[Mr. Karate:] If you wish to know, you first must defeat me.

(vs. Choi)

[Mai:] Choi! Have you seen my little Andy-kins?
[Choi:] How should I know where he is, tootsie? ...Andy-kins... Yee,
hee!
[Mai:] Huh?! "Yee, hee!" what? You do know something!

(vs. Earthquake)

[Mai:] Yikes! Now that is one obese belly!
[Earthquake:] Gah, f, f, f. You're a bit too bulgy in places, too!
[Mai:] Oh, how rude! You can't compare my bulges with yours!

(vs. Genjyuro)

[Mai:] What a samurai stud! Have you seen my Andy?
[Genjyuro:] A female ninja, eh? You'll do well not to work your wiles
on me.
[Mai:] Now just a darn minute! I'm not interested in...
[Genjyuro:] Cackling hen... Annoying wench! Die!

(vs. Shiki)

[Mai:] You, wouldn't have a clue where Andy is, huh?
[Shiki:] ...I only live for one other...

(vs. Geese)

[Mai:] Geese! Yikes! A ghost!
[Geese:] Oh, Bogard's lady!
[Mai:] I'll exorcise you!

(vs. Ryu)

[Ryu:] Better ask directions... Holy cow!
[Mai:] W-what's the deal? Getting all worked up over someone's
clothes.
[Ryu:] Those are rather unusual. Where's the circus?
[Mai:] How rude! This is the traditional Shiranui ninja style.
[Ryu:] Ninja style? People can see you coming miles away!
[Mai:] ...Looks like I'll have to teach you a lesson!

(vs. Ken)

[Ken:] ...Gag!...
[Mai:] Gag?
[Ken:] Are you a geisha?
[Mai:] How rude! Can't you tell right away from my clothes?
[Ken:] Sorry. Sorry. It's just... I... well... What the...
[Mai:] You scraggly rogue. It's time to teach you some Japanese
manners!

(vs. Chun-Li)

[Chun-Li:] Hey, you there! You need more clothes to walk out in
public here!
[Mai:] You're one to talk! How dare you belittle my ninja traditions!
[Chun-Li:] Traditions shmaditions! Put on some decent clothes or I'm
taking you in!
[Mai:] And what about you? You call those "decent"? But I guess
with those chunky legs, that's the best you could do!
[Chun-Li:] OK, that does it! The nerve of you!
[Mai:] The nerve of you!
[Chun-Li:] Say what?!
[Mai:] That's what!

(vs. Guile)

[Guile:] I've heard Japanese women are both reserved and prudent.
[Mai:] That's about right, wouldn't you say?
[Guile:] ...But I guess every country is guilty of a little propaganda.
[Mai:] The nerve! This reserved and prudent Japanese maid will
rearrange your face!

(vs. Dhalsim)

[Dhalsim:] First you must remove all unwanted fat from you. Then
you will be swift.
[Mai:] ...Put a sock in it! My body hasn't an ounce of unwanted fat!
[Dhalsim:] Do not deceive yourself. Training must begin with
complete honesty.... For example... learning your true weight.
[Mai:] Yaaah! Stop! Stop! Enough! I am going to put a sock in it for
you!

(vs. Balrog)

[Balrog:] Be my bride. And I will make you a queen.
[Mai:] Sorry, Mr. Goon. I'm already spoken for. Phhhhhht!
[Balrog:] I'm a lot stronger than those other flippy fops! You still can
reconsider.
[Mai:] Brute strength alone won't cut it with me! And anyway... Andy
is way tougher than you!
[Balrog:] Why you! I'll ruin you! Chicks like you only learn the hard
way!
[Mai:] You simple musclehead. Your limbs are going to learn my
lesson of pain.

(vs. Vega)

[Vega:] Oh, you're quite lovely.
[Mai:] Finally, someone who appreciates true beauty. You must be a
gentleman.
[Vega:] Your body covered with your vermillion blood. It gives me
goosebumps!
[Mai:] ...I take it all back. You're a psycho freak! It's clobbering time!

(vs. Sagat)

[Mai:] Being up against a honey pie like me, how about a little smile?
[Sagat:] Is that how you face life-and-death battles? Foolish little girl.
[Mai:] Now don't get all shy. Let's do it, big boy!
[Sagat:] ...

(vs. M. Bison)

[M. Bison:] Wah ha ha. A girl! Such sweet prey for my psychic
powers!
[Mai:] Psycho...? When you say that, it really freaks me out!
[M. Bison:] Wah ha ha. You're pretty funny. Soon you'll know how
foolish you are.

(vs. Akuma:)

[Mai:] My! You're a scary one. You look like a devil.
[Akuma:] Please die, post haste.
[Mai:] And me without my crucifix and holy water....
[Akuma:] ....
[Mai:] I guess it's all up to my strength and powers alone.
[Akuma:] Destroy!
[Mai:] Yikes! Right away? I really hate being rushed, you know!

(vs. Hugo:)

[Poison:] Hmm. Well, you pass. A bit too bumpy though.
[Mai:] Hey! Watch it, bub!
[Poison:] I'm sorry, but you'll be working for me.
[Hugo:] Don't worry though. You'll be well fed.

(vs. Tessa:)

[Mai:] Oh, gracious. You do dress boldly.
[Tessa:] All the better for mastering sorcery. You, on the other hand,
leave too little to the imagination.
[Mai:] H-hey! Shut your mouth! You'll get bonked!
[Tessa:] Have I angered you? Fighting's so wasteful, but what the
heck?

(vs. Zero)

[Mai:] Oh, what do we have here? What a cute dolly-wolly! I want
one!
[Zero:] ....? What? This Cyber Elf?
[Mai:] Ooooh... Can I get one of those, too?
[Zero:] Another Irregular...? Oh, how tragic...
[Mai:] What do you mean by that? You dare insult me! You'll be
sorry! Big time!

(vs. Demitri)

[Demitri:] Fair maiden, if you bid, let me have you for dinner tonight.
[Mai:] Hmm... A beauty like me and all Blondie thinks about is training...
[Demitri:] What is wrong... Fair maiden?
[Mai:] Oh, clam up! Back off, bloodsucker!

(vs. Serious Mr. Karate)

[Mai:] Oh, Mr. Sakazaki. I may be wrong, but you look different.
[Serious Mr. Karate:] I'm not Mr. Sakazaki. I'm Mr. Karate. Enough
talk! Come on!
[Mai:] Huh? What?

V. Endings

--Fatal Fury 2--

Mai sits on Krauser with her fan over his face....
Date XX XX XX (depends on what day the arcade had)
Mai Shiranui becomes the strongest in the world.
Next, there's a picture of Mai getting a piggyback on Andy, with her Japan
Fan open. She says something in Japanese that mean:

"Oh Andy, I'll make you my disciple."

--Fatal Fury 3--

The blood of the Jins is the blood of death. It
could only, in the end, conclude this way. Jan 1,
1995... Mai Shiranui rids the world of all its evil
Jins! The delusions of the Jins were just that.
Immortality... the last refuge of corruption!

[Mai is shown in casual attire walking in an airport. Lagging behind
is Andy with a lot of baggage]

Mai: Andy, I won so you have to come back to Japan
with me. Andy? Andy! You promised, weasel!

--Real Bout Fatal Fury--

*As Geese is painfully lying down next to Mai Shiranui...she smiles
and performs her favorite winning pose.

She then travels back to Japan with Andy, and Yamada is hardly waiting
for them at the airport. Then when he sees Mai, he happily jumps to
hold her tight.

She then goes to her home, takes a bath, and starts to deeply think of
her and Andy getting married and in wedding dresses...

While she is deeply on that thought, Yamada peeks at her body from
the bathroom window...and smiles.

Mai finishes her bath and wears a sexy dress, then goes to the dojo
and happily stares at Andy training all day. As she looks at him with
her sexy looks, Andy looks at the other side while he is training to
avoid any unwanted conversation.

--Real Bout Fatal Fury 2--

*Mai and Andy get married right away with the wedding dresses on
...then Mai happily jumps and holds Andy tight. Suddenly, Andy's
long hair falls off as Mai realizes he's bald all this very long time.

Suddenly, she wakes up, she realizes that it's a damn unwanted
bad dream...more like a nightmare.

--Real Bout Fatal Fury Special--

Mai: Time for a little trip, eh, Andy?
Andy: With me? W, why?
Mai: Stop that whining and follow me, fool!
Andy: Yes, mam!

Rugal: I....impossible! How could I lose a battle...!!

King: Look! This is the doom of a male-chauvinist!

Rugal: Ha ha ha ha! You still want money! Alright, I'll give you
anything I have here...if you can get out of here alive...! Die
with me! Farewell!

King: Oh no! Let's get away from here!

[After escaping]

King: Whew! We managed to survive...
Yuri: Do you think he's dead?
Mai: Who cares! We've got what we came here for.

[After they took the money and gold happily]

Mai: Yeah, this is it!
King: Yeah, anyway it was worth taking part in the tournament.
Yuri: Yes, indeed! Hoo ho ho ho....!

--The King of Fighters '96--

(Taken from Basel's guide)

Goenitz: What a surprise... eh, Kagura? You guys really know your stuff! but
you will never seal off the Orochi Power again. Give it up now, while you still
can.
Kagura: Don't flatter yourself, ugly. The Orochi Power is as good as locked
away.

Goenitz: You vain fools... oh, a fine wind blows. My time has come.
King: You're not getting away.

Goenitz: No, I'm being called away... to heaven.

  After Goenitz killed himself.

Mai: What the heck was that? And the Kagura's gone, too!
King: That Goenitz guy must have been the legendary enemy of the Kusanagi.
Kyo's ancestors!

Mai: She knew Kyo?
Kasumi: Not only Kyo, the whole Kusanagi clan!

Mai: Hey, this is just too major a concept for me!
Kasumi: Yeah, it's too deep for me, too!

King: Well, anyway, we won again. It's party time, girls!
Mai & Kasumi: All right!

King: That is, Mai, no dancing on the tables for you... and no praying to the
porcelain God!
Mai: Okay! It's okay. Trust me. Right, Kasumi?
Kasumi: Of course!

Mai: King, I brought you a little present.
King: A present?

Jan: Sis! :)
King: J, Jan! It's you! You're so healthy! ^_^

Jan: I fought hard, sis! I promised I'd come and see you when you got back!
King: Jan!
Mai: Sorry for keeping it a secret. We told Jan to surprise you!

Jan: Sis, I always watched you fight on TV! I cheered for you to win!
King: Oh, Jan!

Mai: Hee, hee. We've found the invincible King's weak point.
King: Hey, Mai, knock it off!!

Jan: Yeah, I'm the strongest in our family!
King: Why you little! Ha, ha.
Kasumi: We got you there, King!

King: Mai, Kasumi. Let's drink up!
Mai: Sweet! That's what we were waiting to hear!
Kasumi: Yeah, make mine a double Orange Juice.

King: You guys are the greatest!

--King of Fighters '99: Evolution--

-Ending 1-

We are the NESTS cartel. The new world order. Our
future, is now!

Joe: Whew! That was close!
Andy: Terry! Terry!
Mai: No! Oh my God! Terry was caught in the blast?

Andy: Aaah!
Joe: Andy! A tough guy like him? Don't worry. He can't
be dead.
Mai: I hope not.

Andy: Terry...

Then they left the place. Later on, Terry was seen
battling a guy and beaten the crap out of him.

Terry: Oh yeah! Whaa! Take a hike, fat boy! Whoo hoo!
Peace is back!
Kid: You're one strong dude!

Terry: Thanks kid! Eat your veggies, and you can be
tough like me!

-Ending 2-

We are the NESTS cartel. The new world order. Our
future, is now!

Joe: Whew! That was close!
Terry: What a sad fate...
Andy: Whatever, it's finally over. Let's get out of
here.
Mai: Not so fast, Andy! Remember your promise!

Mai showed him the wedding dress.

Andy: M, Mai! I was just... you can wait, can't you?
Terry & Joe: Hah, hah, hah!

Andy: Oh noooo!
Mai: Andeeeeee!

Andy ran away while Mai madly ran after him with
the wedding dress. Then Mai fell down, and Andy went
to here to check on her.

Andy: H... hey! You okay?

Then Mai got him...

Andy: Ah! You sneak!
Mai: Gotcha, Andy! You're mine!

--King of Fighters 2000--

Yuri: "Well, it ending here..."
Mai: "...would be really unlikely. I knew it..."

Ling: "It's the beginning of an unforgettable event."

            <<Project '00>>

Hinako: "A ceiling...!?"
Kasumi: "When did we get underground?"
????: "Greetings."
Hinako: "Who're you...?"

Heidern: "State your name, villain!"
????: "They call me... Zero!"
Heidern: "Zero, eh...? It fits you."
Zero: "Oh, you're such a joker. You know, we've met before, that is,
I've met you."
Heidern: "Now I know, it was you who slew Krizalid, right? What have you
done with Ling?"
Zero: "He's resting."
Heidern: "You impersonated him, eh?"
Zero: "I'm a master of disguise. So, I masqueraded as Ling. Later,
Ling's clone there took over. Neutralizing all of you
obstacles was the fastest way to realize my plan."
Heidern: "So what's KoF got to do with all of this?
Zero: "It was my way to obtain... The Zero Cannon!"
Heidern: "Stupid! All you had to do was rub us out."
Zero: "You simp! I need all of you for Zero Cannon's power."
Kasumi: "Our energy...?"
Mai: "Zero Cannon? What's that?"
Zero: "An aerial weapon to destroy NESTS -- with all your help."
Mai: "Get real!"
Kasumi: "Who'd possibly help you...?! !!!"

            <<Zero Cannon's firing plan is displayed on a monitor>>

Yuri: "It's weenie time...!!!"
Zero: "You can't resist me. I'll beat you all like a drum. Then your
energy will be sent to Zero Cannon."
Hinako: "How'll you do that?"
Zero: "There is a generator below. Whenever I fight someone... it
siphons my foe's energy and sends it to Zero Cannon. And I'll
use your power to begin the new order!"
Kasumi: "Using us... to conquer the world..."
Mai: "Uh huh. So that's NESTS's scheme!"
Zero: "NESTS? A mere front. The creator of the new order is not
NESTS. It's ME!"
Yuri: "You gotta be kidding! I'll bop you into tapioca! Then trash
your Zero Cannon!"
Zero: "Crush me? Stop the cannon? Give it a shot. If you DARE!!!"

            **FIGHT ZERO AND WIN**

Zero: "You lose."
Hinako: "Huh? What do you mean?"
Zero: "When I press this button, all your energy goes to the cannon."
Mai: "I'll put the kibosh on your twisted ambitions!"
Zero: "Even with my death, you haven't got a prayer. Why do you think
I handed over the clone to Heidern?! Farewell, you fools!
Disintegrate in the light of a brand new world!"

<<Zero presses the button, but the generator chokes>>

Zero: "Curses! What is this...?!"

            <<the generator overloads and explodes>>

Zero: "GOOOAAAAAH...!! ...a malfunction?! What's going on!?"

            **VARIABLE SCENE 1 or 2**

Kasumi: "What the heck is going on here?

<<the four of them look down a hole in the ground>>

Yuri: "Ouch... WHOA! That's one big crater!
Mai: "Look's like he got away."
Hinako: "I don't get it? Did we win, or what?"
Yuri: "Hey, Hinako. What's this then?...
Mai: "Yeah! That's right! We won all right! Ha ha ha..."
Kasumi: "Good job, Hinako! You won your first time out!!!"
Hinako: "You're right! Thank you. I owe it to all of you."

            <<Yuri whispers to Mai>>

Yuri: "psst. Mai! Are you cool with this?"
Mai: "Of course! Whatever! We won, didn't we?!"
Yuri: "...."

            <<One week later>>

<<Hinako's doing her ring entrance ceremony before a crowd
              of schoolgirls>>

Kasumi: "Hinako... over here. Look this way! You're a hit,
eh, Hinako?!"
Yuri: "I can't believe there's a Sumo club at school."
Mai: "It's great. Everything's A-OK!"

<<Hinako finally notices them and waves>>

Hinako: "Oh, Mai. Yuri. Kasumi."

<<the crowd of schoolgirls notices them>>

Crowd: "HEY! Those are Hinako's teammates, aren't they?!!!
They're so COOL!"

Mai: "Hey, this is a little too freaky for me."
Yuri: "Y, you said it..."
Kasumi: "Let's get out of here!"

<<the three of them flee from the frantic crowd>>

Crowd: "KYAAAAH! Wait for us! Everyone join the sumo club!"

Mai: "Whoa! So THIS's what an all-girl's school's like?"
Yuri: "How should I know?!"
Kasumi: "Anyway, let's beat it!"

Hinako: "Ah, I'm so happy!!!

Andy: Hey, evil one! Just where are you going, Geese?

Geese: Escape? It's you who will flee! If you survive, let's meet again. If you
survive...

Out...

Andy: Unbelievable. Trying to master the Orochi power! Geese, that fool!
Whatever. At least he'll lay low presently.
Mai: Whatever. I say let's party. How about it?
Terry: Good idea! I'll call mary. We'll cut loose!

Mai: Then let's do it!
Andy: Oh brother! You two need a reality check!

After a while...

Iori: Kyo didn't swow up then, eh? Whatever. I'll get him. Someday soon...
whatever. It's no concern of mine.

--King of Fighters EX2: Howling Blood--

Mai: H-hold it! Something's not right.
Terry: Are you saying if you go down, we all go down together?
Andy: Darn it... just where are those abducted kids?

Mai: Mary is taking care of it! We'd better get a move on too!
Terry: No complaints from me... but where are the kidnapped kids anyway?
Mary: They've all been rescued and are safe and sound of course. Thanks to all
of you.
Joe: Any time you're in a jam, just say the word! I'll help you out!

Andy: Look who's talking... you didn't do anything this time.
Mai: Yeah, why are you here anyway?
Joe: Shut up! It's just punishment for ignoring me! Tonight, dinner is on you
two!
Mary: .........
Terry: ........

Mai: "Yes! Now Andy is mine! Ok give that talisman to me!"
Andy: "Mai? Why are you here?"
Mai: "Andy! Nice timing! Let's talk about our marriage."
Andy: "Mai, I've been thinking...We can't get married."
Mai: "But I have the talisman! Why can't we be married?"

VI1. Profiles

--Full Profile (From Fatal Fury 2 to King of Fighters 2003)--

(Data courtesy of wikipedia)

-Fatal Fury series-

Mai Shiranui is the granddaughter of Hanzo Shiranui, master of
Ninjitsu and Kopo-ken. Mai learned from her father the secrets of
Ninjitsu, and became an expert in stealth and other sneaky tricks.
Although her beauty has brought her many suitors, she rejects all
who propose to her, considering them "weak." However, one day
she became obsessed with a young boy by the name of Andy Bogard.

Andy had come from Southtown in the United States to train under
the orders of Hanzo Shiranui in Kopo-ken. Mai then had to take
alternate courses from her grandfather's friend, Jubei Yamada in
Ninjitsu. However, far from hating him, Mai fell instantly in love with
the American kid, since he was suitably strong and handsome.
However, Andy paid little attention to Mai, too absorbed in his
training. Mai, on the other hand, had even made plans as to when
Andy would marry her.

After they grew up, Andy became a good-looking young man, and
Mai a very attractive woman who received marriage proposals from
dozens of men. However, Andy decided to travel back to the United
States and reunite with his brother Terry Bogard to exact revenge on
Geese Howard, the man who killed their father.

Mai was infuriated by this desertion, but had no choice but to stay
and keep training. She knew that Andy would come back one day.
Not much time later, Andy returned to Japan in order to continue his
training. He found out that his fighting in Southtown had been for
the wrong reasons; not for the real sense of fighting, but for personal
vengeance. In addition, Andy left Southtown with unresolved emotional
problems and a resolve to gain honor in fighting. Mai did not care for
any of this, she just wanted Andy to be close to her again. So, when
Krauser decided to go out in search of worthy fighters, she followed
Andy to fight Krauser. After the journey, Mai felt even closer to
Andy, and thought it was the time to wrap things up.

-The King of Fighters series-

The new King of Fighters tournament was announced around this
period. The fights would take place between teams of three persons
each. Mai felt it was a sure bet to make a team with Andy, but he
thought otherwise: he would team up with Terry and his friend, Joe
Higashi. Mai was left out, but she promised Andy that she would be
in the tournament as well. Once she found out that the Southtown
bouncer King had received an invitation as well, and had no assembled
team, Mai immediately proposed herself as a team member, along
with Yuri Sakazaki. King was not expecting this, but accepted them
anyway. During the next two tournaments, the Gorgeous Team was
seen as a beautiful, but deadly team.

However, by 1996, Yuri was obliged to take her father's place in the
Kyokugenryo Team, and King and Mai were left without a third team
member. When Mai seemed hopeless, a strange woman attacked her.
Mai avoided the attack and prepared to fight. The woman praised
Mai's skills and introduced herself as Kasumi Todoh, the new third
member of the team. Once more, the Gorgeous Team was back in
action; but by next year, King and Mai were in trouble again, as
Kasumi was still looking for her father. They resigned themselves to
losing the tournament that year. King had to take care of her brother,
Jan, anyway. However, Chizuru intervened, and told Mai and King
that she would gladly be the third team member, and that she would
take care that Jan would go with them.

Mai used the two year recess to go back to Japan and perfect her
Ninja skills, and to spend some more time with Andy. Mai insisted in
that next time, she would team up with Andy, which he took more as
a joke. However, a stroke of luck enabled Mai to finally accomplish
her wish: an invitation for another King of Fighters tournament, with
a new four team member rule. Mai lost no time in joining along with
Andy. However, after the tournament, Terry disappeared under the
ruins of Krizalid's base (the tournament's host). Mai's high spirits
were dampened by the task of trying to reassure Andy that Terry
was not in fact dead.

Even though it hurts to leave her beloved one once again, Mai has
decided to abandon the Lonely Wolves team. After finding out that
Terry was in fact alive, Mai and Yuri reunited after a long separation.
They decide to team up once again, since they miss the fun times
way back when the King of Fighters tournament was just beginning
to grow. They also decided to accept Kasumi along as well, but this
left one gap in their four person team. The final member appeared
soon enough, during an audition in Japan, where they saw a peculiar
little girl named Hinako Shijou. Mai was so impressed with her skills,
that she was taken in as the fourth team member.

--From King of Fighters: Maximum Impact--

Mai is the legitimate successor of the Shiranui style of ninja arts and
assassination techniques.

Her specialty is the use of folding fans and flames.

She often battles in outfits that are a tad too revealing, but her old-world
charms make her an ideal of Japanese womanhood.

--From King of Fighters 2006--

As Mai Shiranui headed for the dojo, it had been her habit since
childhood to silence her footsteps and movements.
Hanzo Shiranui, her teacher in Shiranui Ninja Arts and grandfather
had told her to attack him if she caught him with his guard down.
And if she was successful, he would buy her whatever she had
desired at the time--That was what he had always promised the
young Mai.
Come to think of it, Mai had never stood a chance. In spite of his age,
a girl of 10 or so had no chance of beating Hanzo Shiranui, master of
the Ninja Ars of Shiranui and various modalities of motion.
Of course this was just the hindsight of the adult Mai, but the younger
Mai remained eager to beat her grandfather.
Recalling he always would meditate at dusk in the dojo, it took no time
to plot a surprise attacfk from behind at this time.
But in the end Hanzo had sensed the young Mai approaching before she
reached the dojo, and she had not once succeeded in surprising him, but
her habit of silencing her movements and footsteps still stayed with her.

And todyay Mai is inperceptible as she heads for the dojo. "If Hanzo
were still alive, she might have won---she thinks without conceit as she
slips into the dojo and heads for the alcove and sits back and laughs
silently.

As if tossing her fan, Mai pinches an envelope in her fingers and lets it
fly.
Just after the slight sound of it slicing the wind is audible, the frozen
figure on the mat quickly spins around to snag the fan.
"--Stop goofing off, Mai."
Just when did he notice her?"
Andy Bogard, in a simple singlet, looked at Mai and giggled.
"I'm not goofing off."
Slightly discouraged at her foiled attack, yet reassured by his dependable
reflexes, Mai entered the dojo.
"This came for you."
"An invitation to THE KING OF FIGHTERS, is it?"
Andy heaves a sigh as he sees Mai with the same envelope.
Mai plops herself down next to Andy and tilts her head curiously when
she notices his expression turn grim.
"What's wrong? Naturally you're going to enter, right?"
"No, not this time."
"Huh? You're not entering. What do you mean?"
Mai, who took his entry for granted, is dumbstruck at Andy's words.
"Are you worried about the dojo? You do have a point with both of us
taking off at the same time. But it's only once a year, right? At a time like
this, both of us could join the tournament, couldn't we?"
"I'm not passing it by to watch over the dojo."
Andy shakes his long blond hair and brushes it back.
"Then what is it?"
"Well."
Andy smiles wryly as if put out, slaps his knees and rises.
"---It's because I'm still not sure I can beat my brother."
"Terry?"
"That's the one."
Andy refastens the belt to his singlet and slowly moves away.
He slowly assumes a simple form that is a fundamental Shiranui
position and flawlessly repeats the move in silence.
It's not a tough move but the beads of sweat on his forehead make
clear that it's no picnic.
Even as the sweat begins to cascade down his face, he ignores it and
presses on.
"---I haven't been able to beat him even once."
Having muttered this, just what was Andy fixing his gaze on?
"For me the guy called Terry Bogard is just one obstacle I am
obligated to clear someday."
"If that's the case."
Andy immediately cuts off Mai, who was obviously about to convince
him that KOF would be just the chance to do this.
"I still can't beat him with my current strength. I may not even be in his
leagure. Even if I did take him on, I'd only disappoint him."
So now is the time to lay low for awhile to be ablew to beat Terry
Bogard the next time they meet--That's the message Mai got as she stood
behind him and watched him train in silence.
Maybe this is what masculine pride was all about.

And perhaps Mai felt a little jealousy at this time, too.
Mai couldn't help feeling a tightness in her chest at Andy, as a fighter,
being only fixated on Terry, but if her grandfather and father were
still alive, Mai, too, would be working to surpass them.
Because she understood Andy's feelings, Mai decided to not bother
Andy any longer.
"Take good care of yourself."
The morning Mai was packed and heading for the airport, Andy, too,
would leave the dojo for the mountains during KOF.
"---As always, there's no guarantee this tournament is on the up and up."
"Yeah, I know. Well, I gotta be going."
"Mai."
"Yes?"
Andy suddenly took Mai's hands in his.
"I'm praying for your safety."
Andy's slighty awkward parting and his gentle kiss on her forehead are
two things Mai will never forget.

VIII. Story

---King of Fighters '94---

"If I say no, I mean no! Absolutely not! I will absolutely not permit it!"
When she recalls the words of her brother, fuming his objections, Yuri
puffs out her cheeks in a pout.
"Who does he think he is that dumb brother of mine! He didn't have to
get so peeved! And what a weasel, teaming up with Pop and Robert
like that!"
Yuri's still steaming about her spat, but, in an instant, she regains her
cool.
"What am I gonna do...? Three members for a team...? Hey, I got it!"

"Man! I can't believe you did that, Andy! How unfeeling can you be?"
Just when Mai thought they'd be entering together...
Mai, at her wit's end, mumbles. Andy has quickly teamed up with Joe
and Terry, and all of her other possibilities have not panned out.
"Oh, what in the name of the Supreme Ninja am I going to do...?"
A girl of the same age suddenly appears before Mai, whose shoulders
droop from dejection.
"Mai...Shiranui, I presume?"
Yuri Sakazaki, quite unlike her normally perky self, addresses the ninja
rather stiffly, owing perhaps to the fact that this is their first meeting.
"Why yes. Yes, I am...May I do something for you?"
Yuri replies:
"Well, as a matter of fact...that is...."
"What? You, too?"
"Really?! Wow, that's so harsh!!!"
A few minutes after their first meeting, the two have completely opened
up to each other.
"But where are we going to find another person to team up with us?"
Mai poses this question to her newfound soul sister.

"Yeah, she's in England."
"What?!! In England?!"

And in no time the ravishing Women Fighters Team is ready for KOF
action.

---King of Fighters '95---

King is tending bar on the graveyard shift at her tavern. As she spies
the time, she mumbles with a sigh.
KING: "It should be anytime now."
And just as she utters this, Yuri perkily pops into her place of business.
YURI: "Howdy-do, Kingly-poo!"
King appears overwhelmed by her perkiness.
KING: "Geez.... I saw this coming down Main Street...."
YURI: "Aw come on...I thought I'd surprise you coming all the way to
England, so why don't you look at least a little surprised?"
KING: "Now hold on there, toots...."
Just then, the door opens and in waltzes Mai.
MAI: "King! Konnichiwa-ha-ha!!!"
YURI: "Mai! Konnichiwa-ha-ha to you!"
MAI: "Oh, Yuri! Long time, no see!"
KING: "Good grief.... You guys are easier to read than the funny papers."
MAI: "Aw, geez. Are we so predictable...?"
KING: "I got one of these, too...."
King produces a King of Fighters invitation from her breast pocket.
YURI: "Aw, nuts! Well, it'll save me some breath. So, we're teaming up
again, right?"
KING: "Uh, I hate to say this...."
MAI: "What's wrong, King? You don't mean...."
KING: "I'm sorry, guys...I'm thinking about sitting this one out."
YURI: "What?! What do you mean?! If you're not with us, we'll...."
MAI: "Yeah! We three are supposed to be inseparable!"
YURI: "Tell us why. Why?!
King casts looks down grimly, and then her shoulders begin to shake
and she burst out laughing.
KING: "Haaah, hah, hah, hah!"
MAI, YURI: "...?"
KING: "What a couple of stooges! You fell for it!"
YURI: "Aaaah!!"
MAI: "Oh! You are nasty, girl! You really had us going...."
KING: "I'm sorry. I just couldn't help myself. Seeing you two stooges
again...."
MAI: "Well, then, what's it going to be?"
KING: "Hey, I got burned by you once before, remember? I've been
waiting for this for a whole year!"
YURI: "All right! So you're with us and Ryo's gonna get a whippin'!"
MAI: "Looks like the mighty babes are back in action!"
KING: "Since you two are entering, I guess we've just got to win! You
with me?"
MAI, YURI: "With you, girl!!!"

---King of Fighters '96---

England. Mai Shiranui energetically bursts into King's bar "Illusion."
MAI: "K-King! We're in a real pickle!!!"
King, in the midst of closing up her bar, is struck dumb by Mai's
outburst but manages a response.
KING: "Wh-what's all this then, Mai?!"
MAI: "I-it's...this year's King of Fighters! Yuri won't be teaming up
with us!"
KING: "What?! Yuri?!"
MAI: "Yeah! It seems that Yuri is a part of her father's designs, so if
we don't find a replacement, we won't be able to join the competition."
KING: "...Really? Well, it looks like things are working out to my
advantage...."
MAI: "Huh...?"
KING: "...Mai. As a matter of fact, this is a little hard to say...."
MAI: "What is it?"
KING: "I want out of this year's tournament."
MAI: "Huh?! What did you say?"
Mai can't believe her ears.
KING: "...My younger brother was in an accident just the other day."
MAI: "Your little brother?!"
KING: "Yeah, it was no big deal, but he's my only kin. I'd like to be by
his side. ...So this time around, I'm sorry but...."
MAI: "O-OK, I understand. I hope your brother gets well as soon as
possible. I'm sure this must be tough on you, so hang in there, OK?"
KING: "I'm sorry, Mai. I'm sorry I can't help you. Hey, isn't your
boyfriend...yeah, it's Andy, isn't it? How's he doing?"
MAI: "...Andy always enters as one of the three stooges..."
KING: "Oh...is that so.... W-well, how about staying the night here?"
MAI: "...No. I've reserved a hotel room nearby, so don't put yourself
out. See you...!"
And with that, Mai bursts out of the bar.
KING: "Ah, Mai!"

Mai looks heart-broken as she walks through the town.
MAI: "Looks like I'm all alone again...."
Feeling pathetic, Mai's face flushes red and she loses her composure.
When she comes to her senses, she realizes that tears are flowing
down her cheeks.

After Mai leaves, King remains alone in "Illusion."
KING: "The King of Fighters, huh...?"
King gaze fixes onto a flashy ad broadcast on her bar's tele.

The next day, Mai packs her bags in preparation to return home to
Japan.
MAI: "Sigh. I've exhausted all my options; they didn't pan out.... So
much for this year's KOF."
Mai heaves a sigh of disappointment.
"Bing-bong."
The doorbell to Mai's room rings.
MAI: "Yeah. Is it the bellboy? I'm coming!"
But just at the moment Mai opens the door, "BAM!" A stinging fist
comes toward Mai's face.
Mai barely avoids it.
MAI: "Wh-what the?"
Mai is momentarily dazed but she realizes her opponent's a woman and
her mode of combat appears to be some sort of ancient martial art. She
closes in on the retreating Mai, gradually pushing her out into the hall.
MAI: "Uh!"
As she grunts, Mai repeats a series of kicks. The woman slips by the
attack.
MAI: "There's a lot more where that came from, sister!"
Mai adds a special move to her attack.
MAI: "Dragon Flame Romp!"
The flames alight on the hakama-wearing woman.
This attack catches her off guard, but the woman in the hakama manages
to guard against the attack and winces.
"Now!"
MAI: "Ahh!"
Mai rushes toward the woman in the hakama.
She unleashes her Deadly Ninja Bees.
"Gashee."
Mai guards against the onrushing woman. She grabs onto Mai.
At that moment...
"OK, that's enough!"
The two look in the direction of the voice. A single woman stands in
the doorway.
MAI: "K-King!"
Seeing the figure of King, the woman dressed in the hakama releases
Mai and begins to speak.
WOMAN: "Forgive me for being so rough. I am Kasumi Todoh. King
told me all about you and I felt I had to come and greet you, Mai."
MAI: "Huh? King? And why couldn't you just settle for a simple
hello' or something?"
KING: "That's right. I directed her here. She's our new team member."
KASUMI: "That's right. I've been dying to enter King of Fighters. But
along with entering the tournament, I'd sure love to win it. This little
scuffle tells me that you've got what it takes. With you on our side, I
know winning the competition is no mere pipe dream."
MAI: "H-huh...? So why are you here, King?"
KING: "Uh-yeah. My kid brother saw right through me. He said he
didn't want to see his sister without her usual glow. He prefers to see
me in action and told me he's so proud of seeing me fight. When he
told me he wants me to enter the competition, battle it out, and win, I
realized then I could do more for him winning KOF than sitting by his
bedside.
MAI: "Th-then, King..."
KING: "Yup...! I'm in, of course!"
MAI: "A-all right! If you're with me King, I have no complaints!"
KING: "Well, that's settled then! Mai! Kasumi! We're going for the top!"
KASUMI: "You said it."
MAI: "Naturally! This one's for King's kid brother!"

---King of Fighters '97---

A press conference with Chizuru Kagura about this year's KOF
tournament is currently playing on the TV in "Illusion," King's bar in
England.

CHIZURU: "...I know this has already been mentioned in the various
media, but once again I'd like to take this opportunity to announce the
beginning of the King of Fighters '97."
REPORTER 1: "What exactly is the scale of this year's tournament?"
CHIZURU: "We plan a larger scale than last year for this year's
tournament."
REPORTER 2: "As the scale of the tournament gets bigger, I think it
will be more difficult to handle any occurrences like those of last year,
so what comment do you have about that?"
CHIZURU: "We've strengthened security far above that of the previous
tournament and are doing our utmost to provide everyone with a safe
tournament."
REPORTER 3: "Didn't you fight at the end of KOF '96? According to
the rumors, you plan to enter this year's competition as well. Care to
comment on that?"
CHIZURU: "As far as that goes, I can't say that the particulars regarding
my team have been decided, but, yes, I will most certainly be entering
this year's tournament."
Click, click. Mumble, mumble. Flash, flash.
REPORTER 4: "What's the reason for your entering the competition?"
CHIZURU: "I am, after all, a fighter, and I want to see just how I stack
up."
REPORTER 5: "You said things haven't been decided, but just who do
you plan to team up with?"
CHIZURU: "Let's just say that for the time being I can't give any names,
but I'm going to be negotiating with fighters with whom you are all
quite familiar."

KING: "Hmm, so Kagura will be entering, too...Doesn't matter to me,
though..."
King watches the press conference broadcast from behind the counter.
Just then, Sally the waitress comes toward King, holding something in her
hand.
SALLY: "King, you have a letter. Here it is."
KING: "Th-thanks."
The air-mail letter is addressed to King, and Mai Shiranui's name is
written in the return address space.
KING: (From Mai? What could this be?)
King takes a quick peek at the contents.
KING: (An airplane ticket?)
Inside the envelope there is a letter and an airplane ticket for Japan.
The contents of the letter read: "I have to talk to you about this year's
KOF. See you in Japan."
KING: (...This is weird. Ah, well, I guess I'll go since I have something
to discuss with Mai as well.)

A few days later, King is in Japan. Relying on the map that was enclosed
in the letter, King sees that Mai has already arrived at a modest coffee
shop and sits at a seat by the window.
MAI: "King, it's been ages."
KING: "It has been a while, hasn't it?"
MAI: "So, have you got the shop covered?"
KING: "Yeah, I left everything to Sally and Elizabeth."
MAI: "Those twin waitresses of yours. Is that so? Well, I'll just jump
keep you up to speed about the King of Fighters, then. It looks like I
not going to be finding a third member."
KING: "What about Kasumi?"
MAI: "I tried to contact Kasumi, but she said she's still looking for her
father so she took off after him."
KING: "...Ah-hah...Is that so?"
MAI: "And Yuri has to team up with her brother, it seems. I tried a
number of other possibilities, but they came up empty too."
KING: "Is that so?"
MAI: "So, it looks like this time, I think I'll give up entering."
KING: "That doesn't sound like you. You're always so gung-ho about
gathering up teammates and now you just give up?"
MAI: "I'd like to enter, but it doesn't look like we'll be able to find a
third member. And Andy'll probably enter as one of the three stooges
again, so maybe I'll just go cheer him on."

KING: "Great, then it all works out. I was thinking of sitting this KOF
out too."
MAI: "Oh, really?"
KING: "As a matter of fact, I had planned to take the summer off and
travel with Jan. Since Jan was, you know, up till now, I haven't been
able to take him anywhere. And since I entered last year, my bar got
famous and I've just been so busy, so, since Jan has gotten better,
and we haven't spent any time together..."
MAI: "I see.... Jan must be excited."
KING: "Well, no, I haven't told him yetit's still just in the planning
stages."
MAI: "Ah, I see. But if you've decided so quickly, wouldn't it have
been faster to call me?"
KING: "I suppose. But you went to all the trouble of getting me a ticket."
MAI: "Huh? A ticket? What're you talking about?"
KING: "Yeah, it was in your letter."
MAI: "Letter? But I got a letter from you...."
KING: "Impossible, I didn't send you any letter...."
WOMAN: "I called you two here."
MAI, KING: "?!"
Mai and King turn in the direction of the voice to find the woman who
appeared at the press conference on TV a few days ago standing there.
WOMAN: "It's been a while, hasn't it King and Mai?"
KING: "You're...Chizuru Kagura...it all makes sense now. I had a feeling."
King shows the letter addressed to her to Mai.
MAI: "This is it...?"
KING: "That's the letter that came with the airplane ticket. I thought
something was queer about it...I'm sure you got a letter similar to this
one, right?"
MAI: "Yeah. I thought it was pretty bizarre too."
CHIZURU: "Forgive me. I thought that if I didn't resort to such a ruse,
you two would never have come."
MAI: "Well, the last KOF was no picnic, I'll give you that."
KING: "It's doubtful that I would have come without your name written
on the envelope. I'm in no mood to get caught up in some freaky blood
feud. But since we're all buddy-buddy now...This must be what you
were talking about at the press conference."
MAI: "Ah, the story about her team, yeah!"
CHIZURU: "Yes. I was counting on the power that you showed me in
the previous tournament and hope you'll enter with me this year."
MAI: "Unh...well...it's all right with me. How about you, King?"
King takes a moment to think it over and formulate an answer.
KING: "...Can't you try someone else? I would have liked to have
entered with you, but this year I'd like to devote my time to Jan and
give him something special to remember."
MAI: "...Well, if King won't enter, I think I'll pass, too."
KING: "Mai..."
CHIZURU: "Very well.... I guess I'll have to cancel the four sets of
tickets I prepared for each venue..."
KING: "Four sets of tickets?"
CHIZURU: "Yeah, an extra set for your brother."
KING: "Tickets for Jan?"
MAI: "Ah, I see. That means you can enter the tournament and Jan
can join you, too."
KING: "...But...do you think he'd enjoy traveling around for KOF?"
MAI: "Are you kidding? Didn't he tell you how proud he was to see
you fight? If that's the case then he should really be glad to actually
see you in action."
CHIZURU: "How about it? Will you do me the honor?"
KING: "..."
MAI: "King...."
KING: "...OK...I'm in. I'll enter. But in return we'll have to do our best to
win our matches and go on to all of the venues to show Jan around
the world. If we don't, it won't be worth it."
MAI: "Leave it to me. We're in this to win."
KING: "OK.... Well, then, Chizuru, it looks like I'm in."
MAI: "It'll be my pleasure to enter with you."
CHIZURU: "No, the pleasure will be all mine."

---King of Fighters '99---

When I met up with him again, he didn't sense anything different.
While I was training, it took a while for me to realize that the phone
was ringing.
When I became aware of it, the phone must have already rung 10 times,
and I managed to pick it up just as the caller was about to hang up.
A familiar voice on the other end of the receiver chewed me out.
"Hey, thanks for finally picking up lead butt."
The tone of his voice was more reassuring and calm than complaining,
I felt that he was smiling on the other end, happy to be talking to a
friend after a long while.
After exchanging one or two pleasantries, the caller soon got right to
the reason for his call in his typically matter-of-fact way, or put more
bluntly, in his usually rude way, but when I heard his story, I felt a
feeling of relief.
"It looks like a private event this year. And it looks like we'll be able to
enter as a team of four. The other two...you know who they are! Let's
meet at the place we always do, you know when. You do remember the
place, right? ...I'll let the other two know myself. Let's win this again,
OK?"
Apparently the invitation had only been delivered to him, and he
called me up right away.
Of course I had no reason to turn him down. No...not since I wanted to
test the results of my unsparingly grueling training, anyway. I left
Japan right away. It had been a while since I last saw the gang too, so
I checked into a Southtown hotel a few days before the tournament
and anxiously waited for them to show up.
The morning of the appointed day.
That day was more blisteringly hot than usual, and I realized that the
bed was cool because it was drenched with sweat when I woke up.
When I think about it I must have had the dreadful premonition then
too.
It took about 30 minutes to the meeting place from my room.
I checked out of the hotel quickly because I wanted to walk to take a
jaunt around the old streets of Southtown I had not seen for a while.
The moment I got out of the hotel, a familiar voice called out my name
a few times.
When I looked back I saw him walking quickly toward me, wearing that
familiar red cap, the brim down over his eyes.
So the both of us headed to the meeting place together, and I gave up
any thought of enjoying a pleasant walk through the streets of
Southtown.
At that time I didn't think that anything in particular had changed with
him. He talked in his usual outgoing manner with that winning smile
on his face, didn't appear to be injured in any way, and looked his
usual strong self figure whom even the meanest-looking military types
strutting confidently down the street made a point of getting out of
his way, his arms of steel rippling with those muscles, and that
unnatural chest that the buckshot of the most powerful shotgun would
bounce off of even though the weapon would drop a lion with a single
shot.
We came to Southtown's main street. The city had been changing
dramatically these days I heard, and my eyes were struck by the sight
of skyscrapers I had never seen before and the streets of high-quality
fashion shops and jewelry stores.
It was Sunday and people thronged along the streets of the shopping
district, clearly oblivious to such matters as "economic downturns"
and "war footing;" they exhibited the prosperity brought by peace.
While gazing at the children, laughing with joy while accompanying
their parents who had come to ship, he muttered,
"...I wonder if I'll be coming back this time..."
His comment shocked me.
When I saw the unfamiliar expression on his face, different than
anything I'd ever seen, I finally was able to realize the graveness of the
matter.
Yes, it was like he was going to his death...!!!
Realizing the amazed expression on my face, he quickly changed the
topic to other unrelated matters, as if trying to get me to forget what he
had just said.
I, too, tried to come up with something suitable to say, but I could
only get through the awkwardness of the moment with a nod and a
nervous laugh.
An sense of dread choked us, and we walked on for a while in silence.
I tried not to think about what grim fate awaited us, but that expression
then burned itself into my memory, and I couldn't shake it out of my
head.
The voices of two people calling our names shattered our silence.
Apparently, unawares to us, we had already reached the meeting place,
but when I glanced at my watch, I discovered that we were about 15
minutes late for our meeting.
"Wow, those guys are fast. Oh, Joe already here, too. If you don't
hurry up, pal, Mai's gonna thump you upside the head."
He said this with a laugh and the two waiting for us ran toward us.
Sure enough, Mai appeared a little miffed, striking her usual pouty
pose at the slightly late Andy and me.
Looking back, when I recall the image of the back of him running
toward them, maybe it was a result of the ungodly heat of that summer
day, he looked so far away from me.

---King of Fighters 2000---

Yuri and Mai sit on a couple of chairs on the train platform. They
appear to be in the middle of an argument.

YURI: "Aw, come on, Mai. Are you still angry?"
MAI: "Why did he boot me off the team? I can't believe it! Oh, Andy!"
YURI: "He said that he had to let Mary on the team for her to complete
the job she had, so what are you going to do?"
MAI: "What are you going to do? If it were that simple, than why
would you need a cop on your team?"
YURI: "Don't take it out on me, Mai. More important, if we don't get
cracking and find some new team members quickly we'll run out of
time."
MAI: "I know, I know! There's nothing we can do so we have to make
another team!"
YURI: "Geez, why are you getting all snippy with me?"

Yuri eyes dart around the surroundings as she gets off one last shot.

MAI: "Hey, Yuri. Are you expecting someone?"
YURI: "Heh, heh. I just got an idea about a possible team member."
MAI: "Really? Who is it?"

As Mai finishes her question, a train slides up to the platform.
YURI: "Ah, this is the train. She's supposed to be on board."

POOH-SHAW!
The train comes to a stop and the passengers file out. Among them is
a young woman dressed in a traditional style that seems out of place
and carrying an umbrella.

MAI: "Hey, isn't that...?!"
YURI: "Heeey! Kasumi-eee! Over here, over here!"
KASUMI: "Oh, Yuri-eeee!"
MAI: "Why if it isn't the girl who traveled 12,000 kilometers to see her
father."
YURI: "Hey, back off, Mai. ...Ah, Kasumi. It's been ages."
KASUMI: "It sure has. Thank you for inviting me onto your team."
MAI: "Hello, Kasumi. So you found your father, I take it?"
YURI: "Mai! Put a sock in it, would you?! I'm sorry. Mai's a little
touchy now. Pay her no mind, okay? So, since you're here, all we have
to do is find one more member."
KASUMI: "Yeah, speaking of that, I have an idea!"
MAI/YURI: "An idea?"
"Hey, this is an audition hall, isn't it?"
A young girl obviously the product of well-bred family, gets out of a
posh car in front a Japanese-style mansion.
On the gate to the house is a sign written in large letters, WAY OF
TODOH DOJO-GYM.
The woman walks briskly through the gate and enters the mansion.

YURI: "Whoo!"
MAI: "Well, Yuri, did you find any good candidates?"
Yuri plops herself down on a piped chair while she wipes the sweat
from her with a towel.
YURI: "How did it go...I don't mean any disrespect to you, Kasumi, but
no one really had what it takes, Mai. I hope it all works out, though,
and we can find another teammate."
KASUMI: "Really...I thought that a general audition for a teammate
wouldn't be such a bad idea, but...Mary helped me when I last tried it,
and I think she used something called the Intertrap to do it."
MAI: "That's Internet. Yeah! Yeah! So just why does someone like
Mary have to join Andy's team anyway! Geesh! ...I got it! It's a
conspiracy, a conspiracy carried out by this year's sponsor! The
harmonious relationship I had with Andy was too much for them!"
YURI: "Not again, Mai...I told you to put a sock in it. ...But if this is the
way it's going to be, I wish I hadn't introduced King to Ryo and the
gang."
KASUMI: "I guess that's true, but, for the time being, there are still
people waiting at the general auditions, so let's get on with it? Yuri?"
YURI: "Yeah, you're right. For the time being, there are those who've
come to be on our team, so we should really meet them."
MAI: "OK, next!"

The next contestant enters the practice hall. She's the person who had
gotten out of that posh care shortly before.
"Hello, my name is Hinako Shijo. It's a pleasure to meet you."
All three rise up as she enters and their jaws drop to the floor.
She has blond hair, an elegant and charming face, and a sailor uniform
that seems like that of a high school student to boot.
It appears that a girl who has nothing to do with the martial arts is
standing before them.
MAI: "Uh, excuse me, Hinako, is it? So you'd like to enter this year's
KOF tournament, would you?"
HINAKO: "Yes. By all means I'm hoping you will grant me the
opportunity to audition for the open position on your team. The honor
to be here is all mine."
YURI: "Um, have you ever participated in a fighting tournament before,
Hinako?"
HINAKO: "No, this is my first time."
YURI: "Ah, oh, let's see...(Mai! She's a freaken' amateur!)"
MAI: "(I know!) So, well...uh, yeah. Well then, I know it's a bit sudden
but would you care to spar with Yuri here?"
YURI: "Say what?! (I'm not going to be the one to slap some silly kid
around!)"
MAI: "(If you show her the difference in our abilities, she'll run right
on home!)"
KASUMI: "(And it would be just plain rude to send her on her merry
way without giving her a chance.)"
HINAKO: "Uh, is there a problem here?"
YURI: "Uh...no, no problem. Well, then, shall we have a little match
then?"
HINAKO: "Yes, please."

The match begins.

At that moment Hinako immediately begins to stamp the ring to warm
up.
MAI/KASUMI: "What the...?! Ah! That pose...!! It can't be!"
YURI: "S-Sumo?!"
Seeing a chance for an attack, Hinako stomps down on the canvas and
lunges toward Yuri.
YURI: "(Oh, Oh no! She's got my waist!)"
MAI/YURI: "Aaaaaah!!!"
And the moment Yuri becomes aware of her predicament, Yuri goes
falling to the mat.
MAI/KASUMI: "An overarm body slam!"
Hinako's sumo moves are masterfully applied to Yuri.

MAI: "N-No way...."
KASUMI: "Wow! You tossed Yuri on her caboose in no time!"

HINAKO: "How did I do?"
The serious look in her eyes during the match has already vanished,
giving way to her unassuming visage.

MAI: "W-We got a good idea of your abilities. I just have a question
for you: why do you want to enter the KOF tournament?"
HINAKO: "Uh-huh. If I go into to much detail it would become quite a
long story, but if I win a well-known tournament, the school that I go
to says that they would help me make a sumo team at my school, so I
thought KOF would be the perfect opportunity."
MAI: "Uh, huh.... (I'm not sure I'm following her, but I really think
we've hit paydirt this time...but there sure is a gap between her style of
combat and her looks, isn't there...?)"
HINAKO: "If we're able to win the KOF tournament, I won't have to
practice alone anymore. I wonder how many people would sign up?
And I'll have to get the school to make a suitable training gym, too.
Maybe that space at the right of the school gym...?"
YURI: "Uh, Mai...She seems to be getting all worked up alone over
there...."
KASUMI: "But she's really something. With a body like that, what
refined technique! And she must be the same age as I am, so it looks
like she'll make a fine teammate! I want her on the team."
YURI: "That's fine with me. I'm a little humiliated that she could throw
me so quickly, though...."
MAI: "Y-Yeah, she's a bit , though, isn't she? But she does have
ability...Uh, Hinako?"
HINAKO: "And I'll have them make a window with a beautiful view of
the hill outside...Uh, yes? Did you call me?"
MAI: "We'd like to welcome you as the new member of our team.
We're looking forward to having you with us."
HINAKO: "Yes! Thank you so much. I won't let you down, and I look
forward to receiving your kind guidance. Whooo-hoo!"

---King of Fighters 2001---

"Yes! This year I'm entering for sure!"
A lone girl mutters this with a touch of excitement as she squeezes the
KOF invitation in her hand.
Her expression brims with her enthusiasm towards entering the
tournament.
Now we're in Southtown's Chinatown. The young woman works here
part-time in her Grandfather Bai's Chinese restaurant.
Her name is Li Xiang Fei. Ever since she can remember she has loved a
good fight and works as this shop's bodyguard as well as one of its waitresses.
"Last year was a real letdown. Even though I got an invitation, Mary
and King ended up entering on other teams, and Mai's team was
already decided...."
Xiang Fei still stings with the regrets of being unable to find team
members for the previous tournament, but this time, for sure, she's
determined to enter KOF.
"OK! This year for sure I'm absolutely going to gather together some
teammates and quickly form my team!!!"
Once she makes up her mind, Xiang Fei's quick to act. She bursts out
of the early morning mist that shrouds Chinatown.

Meanwhile, inside Andy's gym in the middle of Southtown, Mai's
voice echoes through the structure to no avail.
"That Andy. I'll never forgive him! This is the second time in a row
he's left me in the lurch, and I won't forget it! Come on! Show yourself,
Andy, you bleach-blond girlie-man!!!"
With almost perfect timing and no prior notification, in pops Xiang Fei,
right in front of a truly peeved Mai.
"Hey, Mai! I thought you'd be here!"
"Say what?! You're Xiang Fei, right?! What're you doing here?!"
"Eh, heh, heh. I heard Andy had opened a gym, so I came to check it
out. And just as I expected, here you are Mai!"
"Well, yeah. I don't mind about Andy opening a gym here, but...Nuts!
The loser's not here! It's just getting to be more and more of a chore
trying to find out where that pretty-boy is! Uh, anyway...do you have
something you want to ask me?"
"Yeah! I thought I could convince you to be on a team with me this
year!"
"Huh?"
Xiang Fei tells Mai relates her experience with last year's tournament.
"Hmm...the dickens you say...Well, all right! I understand. Let's kick
some butt, Xiang Fei! And I want to make Andy scream Uncle.'!"
"...Y-Yeah, that sounds nice. So let's do it together! (It's not the way I
pictured it, but it'll have to do...)."

"Hmm, looks like the whole world's on the skids these days...."
A solitary woman sits inside a bar that boasts a reserved atmosphere.
She looks over the newspaper spread out on the table and sighs.
Meet King. Along with being the owner of the bar "Illusion," she
is an figure well-known among fight fans.
There is still a while before she's set to open her shop. King takes her
eyes off the newspaper and shoots a glance at the envelope placed
casually atop the thick oak counter. It's an invitation to King of
Fighters.
"...It's come uninvited once again this year...ah, whatever...."
And just at that instant, "bing, bong" rings the doorbell.
"I'm sorry, we're not open yet."
King answers melancholically with her back to the door.
"Is that...King? Long time no see!"
"!! Xiang Fei?! And Mai, too. Hmph...."
The instant King saw their two faces, she knew it was another invitation
to enter KOF. But this year she has not intention in the least of
entering the tournament. So that's why she would tell the two the real
reason and get them to leave. But as a result of Xiang Fei and Mai's
persistent pleadings, King's chance to give these two the boot never
arises. King eventually gives in.
"All right. All right already! I'll enter on your team, so enough of this
whining!"
"Really?! All right!!!"
The two go wild with joy.
"But what are you going to do about the fourth team member? You
can't join with a team of three members."
"Uh, I forgot about that...What'll we do? ...Kasumi said she saw her
father in the last tournament so she set out to find him and can't be
reached...and Yuri has already joined up with the Kyokugen Karate
team...."
"Mai, uh, what about that sumo chick that entered last year. Won't
she do?"
"Ah, you mean Hinako? She has school to worry about now...."
"That's not a problem. I'll convince here!"
Xiang Fei confidently comes to a credible conclusion.

"Nice to meet you. My name is Hinako Shijo."
It didn't take especially long for Hinako to show up at the bar "Illusion."
What a coincidence that she shows up on a trip to Southtown at this
very moment! It looks like the final pieces have fallen into place, so
Mai's beside herself.
"So you're that sumo fanatic, Hinako, are you? Well, today everything's
on the house so eat up!"
"!!!"
King stops wiping the glasses momentarily and takes a deep breath.
She resigns herself that there's nothing she can do, today's just not
her day. Not her day, and not her month: accounts this month will
surely register in the red.
"Oh really? Thank you very much. I oblige myself of your kind
hospitality."
"...So, Hinako, won't you enter KOF with us? With you on our team, I
know we can win for sure."
"Oh, really-eeee? I'm truly honored to hear that. And if you provide me
with another opportunity to enter...I'll be able to get more sumo club
members, and...yeah, can I bring my sumo club teammates to the event?"
"Uh, yeah, the more the merrier, right?! It would be nice to have our
own cheering section!"
"U-Uh, that's fine with me. Well, anyway, we have all of our members
lined up, eh? Oh, good grief...."
"And in the event of our victory, I'll be happy to treat you and all your
friends to a dinner party here at my place."
"Huh?!!! Really?! All right! Now I feel more psyched than ever. We're
really going to bust some heads!"
And so, with Xiang Fei's passion, Mai's rage, and King's tolerance (?),
the new Women Fighters team came into being.

---King of Fighters 2003---

"Mai, King, sorry to have kept you waiting. So let's have some fun."
A baseball field on the outskirts of Southtown.
Although the baseball season has already ended, the double "A"
league is playing a tournament to appeal to the local baseball fanatics.
The one who has asked Mai Shiranui and King here is none other than
Mary Ryan. She's a female agent who's known for her considerable
talent in the field.
"Both of you have no objections to a dog and some suds, do you?
The hot dogs here are legendary."
"You sure are all worked up today, Mary."
"So what's with those clothes? Are you planning to play catch in the
stands or something?"
King and Mai are mutually impressed. Looking around the stadium,
it's questionable whether there are even a thousand or so fans in
attendance. So it's close to a miracle that a hot dog stand is open for
business.
And Mary is no slacker either, decked out in her usual leather jacket,
baseball cap, and even a broken-in glove in her left hand.
"Oh, this thing? It's to snag those home runs. Hey, some hot dogs
over here please."
There are no seats in the outfield of the ballpark but a well groomed
lawn instead. The fans sit her on sheets laid out to their liking. Among
them are some who have removed their shirts, enjoying a bronzing
session along with the ballgame. It's well into autumn, but today is a
paragon of an Indian summer day.
Mai loses no time sinking her teeth into her hot dog.
"Wow, this is really good - just the right amount of onions."
"I told you so. These are the perfect accompaniment to a tall glass of
beer."
"By the way, Mary, although I do know my pool, baseball's all Greek
to me."
"Don't worry about it. It's fun enough just watching the players throw,
hit, and run the bases."
"Hmm, I guess so. How many points do you get for a homerun?"
"Uh..."
"All I know is battledore and shuttlecock, myself, so, come on, teach
us the rules. How many points for an out?"
"Uh...Oh, don't sweat the details now. Watch and learn"

The batter smacks a fly ball, high and deep.
The white sphere shoots into the serenely blue Southtown sky, but
the centerfielder snags it with barely a move. It's the third out and the
sides change. King tries to strike up another conversation once the
play comes to a halt.
"By the way, Mary."
"That was an out. You don't get points for that."
"That's not what I was trying to say..."
"We're surrounded."
Mai seems to be aware of the situation too. There aren't too many of
them.
But some clearly well-conditioned individuals around the stairs to the
seats, in the shadows of the billboards, and behind the light posts
have them encircled and are gradually closing in.
"Five, no I'd say six. Mai?"
"At least in the immediate area I'd say so. There may be more waiting
in the wings."
"I'm sorry, looks like I got caught with my pants down here."
With that remark, Mary shoves the last bite of her hot dog into her
mouth, washes it down with a swig of beer, and then licks the ketchup
off her fingers.
The eyes of the three remain on the action on the field.
"They don't seem too anxious to use guns. I say we let them move
closer into range, sound good to you?"
"It's your call, Mary."
With the previous change-up the match completes the top of the third
and the visiting team is now looking at a man on first with no outs.
The clean-up batter is at the plate.
Crack!
Along with the short bang of the dry bat smacking the ball, Mai
backhands the nose of the man who has approached her from behind.
She takes his right hand and in no more than a couple of seconds she
twists it up behind him.
In a flash King swings her feet along the ground to trip up the feet of
another man coming to the aid of Mai's assailant. The man falls flat on
his back onto the grass. King's heel then lands in a flowing motion
down on his unguarded solar plexus.
The baseball meanwhile bounces into left center and the runner makes
a beeline towards home.
The small crowd erupts in cheers and applause for the runner.
"Tish."
Still another man witnesses the unfavorable series of events unfolding
before his eyes and tut-tuts his accomplices in spite of himself, then
glances backward.
"What are you doing? Malin!"
"You're busted!"
The moment he lets his guard down, Mary seizes his arms.
It's a brief and speedy action that appears as if she shook her arms up
and down just a few times. And with that, there is a disagreeably dull
snap accompanying the dislocation of his shoulder.
The final brawl is drowned out by the cheers for the batter just making
the slide into third base. The home (visiting?) team has just taken the
lead with a three-base hit. A flashy display appears on the scoreboard
and the screaming color commentary of the announcer from a radio of
one of the fans echoes in the area. No one appears to be aware of the
action taking place in the stands.

"I suppose this is a warning for me. They're telling me to go home. But
Blue Mary doesn't give in to threats."
"Damn, no one told me something like this would happen. So it wasn't
just him?"
"You're not very up on your intel for someone in your line of work.
Just try pulling something like this with my pals here. You'll have to
answer to me, Mai Shiranui!"
"And your friendly neighborhood bouncer, who wishes to remain
anonymous."
"?! ...Y-you're those fighter chicks from KOF, aren't you? Tch, I'm out
of here!"
In spite of the shape of their bodies, the men retreat in a right quick
and orderly fashion.

"My precious hot dog is ruined!"
Unlike Mary who managed to gulp hers down in the knick of time,
King and Mai's superlative sausages rest on the lawn, splotches of
ketchup and mustard color the grass.
The three are not at all fazed by their predicament, nor are they in the
least afraid or jittery. They are seasoned fighters, pros who have
survived scuffles more severe than this.
"I'll go get us some new ones."
Mai gets up and makes her way to the singular stand that served them
before.
"I'll take two hot dogs (Hmm, Mary could probably use one more too).
No, make that three."
"Hey, you were just here, weren't you? You don't need to pay."
"Huh? But why?"
"It's already been covered. Here you go, three hot dogs."
"Covered? By who?"
"What? Don't you know her? She's a petite, cute little thing. Her name
was, uh, yeah...it was Maria, or Mario...no, something like Marie,
maybe? Nah, I think it was Mariko?"
"Do you mean, 'Malin?'"
"Yeah, yeah. That's it! It was 'Malin.' She left me a message for you,
too."

Mary and King immediately sense that things aren't right with Mai.
"What's up, Mai?"
"It looks like someone already knows of our plans to enter this year's
KOF."
"So what's the big deal, we're in it every year? Was she scrounging for
an autograph or something?"
"No, just the opposite. She sprang for our hot dogs."
"What's all that about!"
"And she left us a message. It reads, 'This competition looks like it's
going to be a blast, so you'll be seeing more of me later. Your pal,
Malin.'"
"Malin? ...Didn't that bunch of thugs mention that name?"
"Oh, whatever. We'll find out all the details once the tourney starts.
Look, another hit!"
The dull roar of the crowd emanates from the baseball stadium on the
town's outskirts.
And the sun has begun its westward descent.

---King of Fighters XI---

"Hooray for Master Kim!"
"Best of luck!"

Chang & Choi gave a hypocritical--that is to say, blatantly false--er,
rather, heartfelt cheer for Kim and Terry as they waited in the airport
lobby.
The path leading to this particular turn of events had certainly been a
twisted one.
On one of Mai's chance encounters with Andy, she lost her temper
and told him it would be just fine with her if they "didn't participate,"
and dragged him off on a forced vacation... and Joe Higashi had been
forced to abstain, as he had a scheduling conflict with a Muay Thai
title match.
Finally, Tizoc, who had joined with Terry last year, had already joined
a different team for this year, leaving the Lone Wolf in a bit of a tight
spot.
It was then that he ran into Duck, looking as carefree as ever.
"Hey, Terry? What's up? You don't look yourself."
Flashy clothes, sunglasses, a mohawk and those high-tone dance
steps.
Terry felt his spirits lift slightly on seeing one of Southtown's minor
celebrities, and thought he might have a way out of his jam. He replied
immediately with a cheerful, "KOF? Sure, why not? Might help relieve
the boredom!" Perhaps the gods were smiling down on Terry again.
"But aren't we missing someone, Terry? KOF teams need three people,
right?"
"Yeah, I'm working on that part..."

Terry planned on getting the leader of the Korean team, Kim, to split
from them.
Since Choi Bounge hadn't participated last year, due to the inclusion
of Jhun Hoon, it made sense that he might not participate again this
year. And since Jhun wasn't planning to fight this year, the Korean
team's roster had was a bit short of the three needed.

"Well, if we invite Kim, that ought to settle things, right Terry?"
"It would be great if he joined us, but I don't think he will."
"Why not?"
"He's worked hard with Chang & Choi. KOF is where they've done
most of their training. It wouldn't really be fair of us to cut in on that."

Duck gave an exaggerated shake of his head. He looked remarkably
exasperated.
"Uh, Terry, you really should think a little harder."
"Huh?"
"Kim's students have improved themselves during KOF, right?"
"..."
"Am I right?"

***

"Hooray for Terry and Duck!"
"We just know you're going to win!"

When presented with Terry's offer, Kim had been reluctant and unsure,
while Chang and Choi looked as though they might burst into song
and dance. Unsurprisingly, they offered much encouragement.
"If you go without us, Master Kim, you can fight much more powerful
opponents," said Chang.
"We can use the time to train more for next year's KOF!" added Choi.
They have not forgotten their feelings are just window-dressed and
just want to justify it. As the three boarded the plane, they waved
small flags in the lobby, wishing them a safe trip, and the like.
If they'd learned anything in their time with Kim, it was that he was
very observant, and was not easy to fool.

"You've done a good job training them and steering them on the right
path. Are you a little worried, Kim?"
"Of course not. Hah hah hah!"

He wore his usual smile, and seemed quite confident.
Now his team would be at full fighting strength, but still...
Terry considered their plans, and elbowed Kim in the ribs. He sat down
and whispered quietly to avoid letting Duck hear him.
"Hey, Kim. Is it okay for Duck to dress like that all the time?"
"..."
"If you think about his prospects, KOF could be the chance to kinda
steer him right, you know? Put him on the right track."
"Ah, I see... you may be right, Terry."

Now that he'd been given a goal to work toward again, Kim folded his
arms and pondered.
Suddenly, he felt another elbow in his ribs, this time coming from
Duck.
"Hey, Kim. Don't you think it's time Terry stopped playing the part of
the wandering warrior and settled down somewhere? As a friend, I
kinda worry about him."
"..."
"If there's anyone who could show him the value of a traditional life,
it's you."
"Ah, I see... you may be right, Duck."

Kim was feeling more cheerful than ever.
In unity, there was strength.
Now that he had new goals for which to strive during this new KOF,
he could begin his preparations like always. The plane holding the
three flew high above Southtown.

***

"...They're finally gone," said Choi.
"Yep."
"Those two just don't understand Master Kim one bit, do they?"
"You got that right."
"It ought to be fun to see what kind of changes he's inflicted on them
when they get back."

"..."
"..."
"You know, it's actually a little bit lonely here now..."
"Yeah, just a little bit."

---Neo Geo Battle Coliseum---

The Ninja Arts of the Shiranui has a history of 400 years. With the
death of Hanzo Shiranui, the preservation of this tradition has fallen to
Hanzo's granddaughter Mai. While she seems to be overwhelmed by
the legend and status of the Shiranui legacy, this unfortunate female
ninja bravely endures her destined lot....But far from the tragic figure,
Mai faces today's training cheerfully, guides her disciples, and stays
on Andy Bogard like ugly on an ape. The stoic Andy does not resent
Mai for this, but doesn't exactly feel put out by her excessive affection.
That's why finally...
"Put a sock in it. We're both in the middle of training for Pete's sake..."
he exclaims. And then it was out there.
"Now you've done it. I'll show you I don't need anymore training!"
And to prove this Mai joins the Battle Coliseum.

IX. Trivia Section

-Fun fact: Note that Mai does not have her bounciness in the English
King of Fighters 2000 or 2001, and is hardly noticable while standing still
in King of Fighters: Maximum Impact. It was also taken out in the English
Fatal Fury 2 and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special series.
-Mai only has the fourth largest bust size of all female King of Fighters
characters.
-Mai appears in Gen-an's and Haohmaru's endings in the first Samurai
Shodown, and in Gen-an's ending, she actually kills Gen-an with a
Super Deadly Ninja Bees.
-Regardless of their last name, Mai and Gen-an are in no way related
to each other.
-Something that many may not know, but Mai has been taught in the
Shiranui-ryuu Ninjitsu arts for 17 years.
-According to SNK, Mai, in the early planning stages of Fatal Fury 2,
was originally supposed to be a male named Ninja Master. Thank
goodness that didn't happen, eh?
-Mai is voiced by Akoya Sogi in all of the games that she has appeared
in (Japanese voice) and in the Japanese version of King of Fighters:
Another Day.
-It's good to note that Mai did NOT learn all of her Shiranui ninja
arts from her grandfather Hanzo. In fact, when Andy came to Japan
to train in the style, Hanzo sent Mai off to Jubei Yamada to complete
her training in Shiranui ninja arts.
