-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A1. Version History
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

4/3/10: Version 1.0
The main intention of this FAQ is to be a centralized source for the
objectives of KOF 2002 UM's Challenges, since they're in Japanese in
the PS2 version of the game this guide is based on.

Thanks
----------------------------
nekich - For the first complete listing of challenge mode
objectives that I know of.

LeadTester and Eiji Kisaragi -
Their outlines/tips for the expert challenge objectives on YouTube
were the first indicators I saw of what was what and helped set me in
the right direction to figuring these out. Go check out LeadTester's
channel for great examples of how to get through the expert challenges!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A2. Notation & Terms
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This FAQ shortens direction descriptions to the notation on the left.

ub u uf Up-Back Up Up-Forward
    | |
b - c - f Back - Center - Forward
    | |
db d df Down-Back Down Down-Forward

dp = Dragon Punch motion (f, d, df)
LP, LK = Light Punch, Light Kick
HP, HK = Heavy Punch, Heavy Kick

Command Normal = Extra normal done with a direction and button press,
i.e. Kyo's f + LK (see in-game movelists - these are listed early).

MAX = aka SDM, stronger DM/super, requires 3 super gauge bars.
MAX2 = aka HSDM, strongest DM/super, which can only be done when the
character has 30% health or less and 3 super gauge bars.

MAX Mode = Special mode that allows for attack cancels:
LK+HP activate. Costs 1 super gauge bar when activated normally
and 2 when activated in the middle of a combo.
MAX and MAX2 only cost 2 super gauge bars while in this mode.

See in-game movelists for specifics on how to perform command,
special, and super attacks. MAX and MAX2 supers are labeled as such in
English letters at the end of the movelists, so they're hard to miss.

=======================================================================
C. Tips
=======================================================================

Please note that not every challenge will have a tip, as there are
some that are just really straight forward and others I have no
particular comments on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
C1. Normal Challenges
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

01. Execute Throw Escape (forward + HP/HK while being thrown) 5 times.
----------------------------
T: Note that the button you should use to escape successfully (HP or
HK) depends on which throw (HP or HK) the opponent uses. If you fail
to escape the first time, they'll start alternating between their HP
and HK throws - otherwise, they'll start with HP and just keep using
it, meaning you can just use f + HP to escape a bunch consecutively.

06. Beat an opponent who uses Guard Cancel Blow Back on all attacks.
----------------------------
T: Brain dead way: Spam King's Double Strike (d, df, f + HK). For most
characters, the second strike will hit. Just watch your time. In any
case, a projectile followed by another attack that can reach without
being interrupted should work well here.

07. Beat an opponent who uses Roll repeatedly.
----------------------------
T: Simply spamming LK and occasionally HK will take care of this.

10. Combo: Include MAX Mode Activation (i.e. LP -> MAX Mode).
----------------------------
T: Yes, it's really as simple as hitting the opponent with LP or LK
or something and then activating MAX Mode quickly.

17. Use d, d + P to survive Clone Zero's DM.
----------------------------
T: Just do it right at the beginning and you will be fine.

18. Hit opponent w/ Overkill (db, d, df, f, uf, u, d + P in air, close)
----------------------------
T: Chris will constantly be attacking you with Shooting Dancer: Step,
which is a dash attack followed by a jump and boot to the head when it
hits (even when blocked). You can hit him with Overkill any time he's
in the air, whether that be during the jumping step attack or when
he's flying backwards after the move is blocked or when he's jumping
to perform the step kick after the elbow dash.

22. Using Kensou, whose health is gradually draining, beat 3 opponents.
----------------------------
T: Fortunately, Kensou will not be K.O.'d if your health reaches 0 via
this special drain - only the enemy can finish you off. Take
advantage of Kensou's MAX2 (d, df, f x 2 + LK+HK), a fast fireball
which will return to him as a smaller one and power up his attacks.
Just remember that his fireball special can kill said smaller one
while it's returning, so don't get too carried away with the
projectile spam.

26. Beat the opponent with 10 hits or less.
----------------------------
T: As you might imagine, grapplers work well here, since they have
attacks that do a lot of damage with only one hit. You can also
sit back and whiff specials to gain some meter and pull a DM, but
keep an eye on the timer.

29. Avoid being hit by Choi's MAX2 3 times. You have 0 health.
----------------------------
T: Roll backwards a lot. Look out for the finisher, in which Choi will
appear again to deliver the final blow - you may need to time your
roll to avoid it when it comes time for that.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
C2. Expert Challenges
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

02. Use Seth's HP+HK Blow Back to interrupt Foxy's MAX2 3 times.
You need to take advantage of this move's auto-block frames.
----------------------------
T: Said auto-block frames occur early on in the attack's animation, so
start doing it when Foxy is close to you.

03. Mirror match: Beat the opponent, who uses the same character as you
and copies everything you do exactly.
----------------------------
T: Basically, you need to hit your opponent with one attack that won't
hit you too and then just do normal attacks to trade hits until they're
K.O.'d. A special grab of some sort should do the trick, although you
may end up needing to do it more than once if you mess up and they
grab you first.

06. K.O. opponent using the follow up on Ralf's MAX2. The main motion:
d, db, b, db, d, df, f + LK+HK. The follow-up is d, df, f x 2 + LP+HP
----------------------------
T: The timing for the follow up, which is basically a real deal
Galactica Phantom that you need to hit them with as they fall back
down after the initial MAX2, is EXTREMELY TIGHT. We're talking like,
one frame tight. It's all about good timing. Keep in mind, in the
regular game, aside from bosses, this is an instant K.O. (!!)

11. Combo: K.O. opponent. Jump and Roll are disabled.
----------------------------
T: Use Iori's Scum Gale special grab (f, df, d, db, b, f + P) to keep
the combo going. This is the one where he makes the opponent
switch sides.

18. Parry opponent's attacks with Ryo's f + LK &/or df + LK and
counterattack to do damage until opponent is defeated.
----------------------------
T: Follow up with a special attack. His dp + P works well.
