1-1- The Author

Off_Da_Border (Alan Tyler). I've always been a big fan of racing games. I'm
also a big fan of Exotic cars which come in 500+ HP STOCK. Now you're probably
wondering what I'm doing with this game, well, it's simple. I'm not the fanboy
kind of person which would prefer one kind of game and that's it. The hype of
this game reached me, so I decided to check out what this game's all about.

If you want to ask any questions, e-mail me at: odb.8492 [at] gmail [dot] com
You can also find me at the Need for Speed Carbon (PS3) boards and occasionally
at the PlayStation 3 Hardware, GTA Vice City Stories, and GTA IV boards. Just
post a message to notify me of your email (if you sent any), but don't flood
the boards. I'd say don't post, but do if you must. DO NOT ask the question or
requests on these boards, since you'll probably be modded by the GameFAQs
moderators for off topic posting... :)

I have a life outside GameFAQs if you haven't guessed, but I'll try my best in
replying to your questions or e-mails. DO NOT SEND THE E-MAIL MORE THAN ONCE!
Chances are I haven't checked my inbox. Just be patient. The average time to
reply should vary from around 1 day up to 3 weeks. I don't guarantee anything
though.

You can e-mail the following:
o Corrections of info in the FAQ
o Contributions to the FAQ, such as additional races and secrets
o Praise and thanks
o Questions NOT ALREADY ANSWERED in the FAQ, DOUBLE CHECK THIS
o Future requests for any FAQs or Reviews
o Critiques of this FAQ, as long as IT IS informative and polite
o Requests to host this guide on your site

You cannot e-mail the following:
o Any mail containing explicit or offensive language
o Hate mail
o Any mail containing links to virus infected or porn sites
o Any spam, adware, spyware, virus, or the like
o Any mail with attachements
o Anything not in relation to this FAQ and not mentioned in the "can e-mail"
  list
o Hard to understand internet jargon AKA "i am teh kewl b3c@w53 i r@wk"

You MUST include "TFATF FAQ" in your subject line, otherwise your e-mail will
be deleted.

If you want to host this Guide on your site, do not hesitate to e-mail me. Make
sure to post a link to your site. I will browse through the site first before
deciding.

1-2- The Game and the Guide

The Fast and the Furious is basically the game version of the respective Movie.
It's all about tuners, muscles, and Japan. Namco promised extensive
customization options, but they seemingly missed that customization is not all
what cars are about.

You can find a review for the entire game (done by me) on GameFAQs sometime
soon. I'm pretty busy, but expect it around the end of the month.

This guide will include information about races and cars, as well as a
walkthrough to get you through the game. The way mentioned here is NOT the
only way to beat the game, and you can use your own personal choices. I will
include methods to beat the races in other vehicles as well, but I will not
classify ways to beat the game in each and every car. If you follow this
walkthrough you should not find difficulties in winning races in this game.

This guide is version 0.45 at 10/19/06. As you can see, it's far from complete.
Expect the next update in one or two weeks.

Version 0.45
o Completed the Roll Up racers list, only need to know some of their cars
o Removed 1up from the hosts list due to their request
o Added CheatHappens, Cheatplanet, and Gamesradar to the hosts list

Version 0.4
o Added Neoseeker and Supercheats to the hosts list
o Added a part to the Walkthrough
o Added more Roll Up Races in the Checklist
o Added a Grip Racing tutorial

Version: 0.3
o Very minor fixes to the drift names
o Added a part to the Walkthrough
o Added more Roll Up Races in the Checklist

Version: 0.15
o Initial Release

What you might expect:
o Complete the Drifting section and the Grip Battles section
o Adding to the main walkthrough
o Adding to the checklist
o Complete the Tips and Tricks section
Remember, I'm not guaranteeing anything...

The meat of the game. Let's get started!

2-1- First Race

o Top Speed Race
o Vehicle: Honda Acura NSX
o Cash Reward: $6000 (+$12000)
o Opponent: Hanzo
o Opponent Vehicle: Mazda RX8

This is a very simple race. You're in a pretty powerful car, so there should be
no problems. Just Nitrous all the way [R1] and avoid the traffic, which isn't
very dense. Enjoy the $18000 you've got for now!

2-2- Choosing your First Car

These are the available cars for purchase:

o '86 Toyota Levin GT-Apex [FR] [$8040]
o Power: 138 BHP, Weight: 2349 lbs, Torque: 110 ftlbs

o '86 Toyota Sprinter Trueno [FR] [$8891]
o Power: 138 BHP, Weight: 2283 lbs, Torque: 108 ftlbs

o '89 Nissan Silvia S13 K's [FR] [$11558]
o Power: 172 BHP, Weight: 2525 lbs, Torque: 165 ftlbs

o '05 Ford SVT Focus [FF] [$13490]
o Power: 170 BHP, Weight: 2760 lbs, Torque: 145 ftlbs

o '06 Honda Civic EX 1.8 i-VTEC [FF] [$13785]
o Power: 138 BHP, Weight: 2922 lbs, Torque: 124 ftlbs

o '99 Toyota MR-S S-Edition / '02 V-Edition [MR] [$13834 / $14233]
o Power: 138 BHP, Weight: 2222 lbs, Torque: 126 ftlbs

o '97 Honda Acura Integra Type R [FF] [$14240]
o Power: 195 BHP, Weight: 2650 lbs, Torque: 130 ftlbs

o '98 Honda Acura Integra Type R [FF] [$15320]
o Power: 195 BHP, Weight: 2437 lbs, Torque: 130 ftlbs

o '96 Nissan 180SX Type X [FR] [$15471]
o Power: 105 BHP, Weight: 2701 lbs, Torque: 203 ftlbs

o '99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX [AWD] [$15995]
o Power: 210 BHP, Weight: 3280 lbs, Torque: 215 ftlbs

o '90 Mazda RX-7 Infini IV [FR] [$16000]
o Power: 215 BHP, Weight: 2642 lbs, Torque: 198 ftlbs

o '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero [FR] [$16325]
o Power: 217 BHP, Weight: 2745 lbs, Torque: 202 ftlbs

o '93 Nissan Silvia S14 Q's Aero [FR] [$16500]
o Power: 158 BHP, Weight: 2613 lbs, Torque: 140 ftlbs

o '00 Toyota MR-S VM180 TRD [MR] [$16647]
o Power: 153 BHP, Weight: 2222 lbs, Torque: 126 ftlbs

o '05 Scion tC [FF] [$16995]
o Power: 160 BHP, Weight: 2921 lbs, Torque: 163 ftlbs

o '97 Nissan SIlvia S14 Q's Aero [FR] [$17500]
o Power: 158 BHP, Weight: 2679 lbs, Torque: 140 ftlbs

o '04 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT [FF] [$17550]
o Power: 200 BHP, Weight: 3137 lbs, Torque: 205 ftlbs

o '97 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero [FR] [$17825]
o Power: 220 BHP, Weight: 2811 lbs, Torque: 205 ftlbs

Phew... That was a long list. Basically most of the cars are not worth your
money. Since you've got $18000 you need a good car and end up with spare money
for customization. I'd strongly suggest the '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero,
'90 Mazda RX-7 Infini IV, or the '99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. They all have good
210+ BHP, good Torque, excellent $16000 price, and a great 0-60 off the line.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse also is an AWD, giving you good stability in races.

I chose the Silvia for this Walkthrough.

2-3- Performance Upgrading #1

To the first Customization menu you'd see in the game. First of all, AVOID
VISUAL CUSTOMIZATION FOR NOW! You need the money for Performance Customization.
There will be a time to get the Visuals, but that is not now.

You can get a Level 3 Intake and Exhaust upgrade, or a Level 3 intercooler.
The intercooler weighs more, but gives a better BHP and Torque boost. Your
choice. If I were you I'd spare the intercooler for now and get the Level 3
Intake and Exhaust, as well as a Level 2 Fuel and Ignition System.

My Silvia's stats after Customization:
o Power: 252 BHP, Weight: 2739 lbs, Torque: 231 ftlbs
o Cash remaining: $141 (Oh my, we're such money wasters.)

After you're done, press Triangle to exit.

2-4- Team DailyDriven Member #1 - Aqualine Bridge Hot Spot

This is your first (well, second) opponent.

o Destination Battle 1
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $1200 (+$141)
o Opponent: Criss [DailyDriven]
o Opponent Vehicle: '97 Silvia S14 K's Aero

Another easy race if you followed my instructions so far. Just avoid the
traffic and walls, and you're fine. The track is straightforward with no
problems, so you should be on the gas for most of the time.

o Game Completion: 1%

2-5- Team DailyDriven Member #2 - Aqualine Bridge Hot Spot

Another fairly simple opponent.

o Destination Battle 2
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $1500 x3 times (+$1341)
o Opponent: Tommy [DailyDriven]
o Opponent Vehicle: '05 Scion tC

Again, if you followed the walkthrough, this race should be a piece of cake.
There is a right turn somewhere in the beginning that you need to brake for
though.

You need to race him once for the Game Completion %, then two more times for
the Cash. You'll need it.

o Game Completion: 1%

2-6- Performance Upgrading #2

Now for some more Upgrading. You've got $7341 to spend on customization. Again,
ignore Visuals and focus on Performance Upgrades. You have the Level 3
Turbocharger for $3600, Level 4 Intercooler for $1800, and Level 4 Grip Tires
for $1338, making a total of $6738. For now, we've got the money. So go get 'em
upgrades!

Then, sell your Level 2 Fuel and Ignition System for $295 and get a Level 3
Fuel
and Ignition System for $750. That leaves you with a nice $148.

The Silvia's Performance:
o Power: 401 BHP, Weight: 2772 lbs, Torque: 365 ftlbs
o Cash Remaining: $148

Pretty amazing now huh?

2-7- Team DailyDriven Member #3 - Aqualine Bridge Hot Spot

It starts to get tougher here, but basically if you follow the FAQ till here
you'll be fine.

o Destination Battle 3
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2000 x2 times (+$148)
o Opponent: Warren [DailyDriven]
o Opponent Vehicle: '06 Dodge Charger SRT8

There's one horrible 90 degree turn to watch out for. When you exit a really
long tunnel be prepared. As soon as you see big white arrows pointing left
BRAKE HARD! The turn is then followed by some sharp turns. Again, brake hard.
That's all what's really difficult in the race. If you don't brake you'll hit
the wall hard and lose grip and end up facing the wrong way. Very Bad.

Do the race twice for the bling bling. :)

o Game Completion: 2%

2-8- Visual Upgrading #1

ZE MOMENT UV BEEN WAITIN 4!! Go chill and get yourself a bodykit or something.
Really. You're car is already souped up in peformance for now. So just spend
the money you've got on some visuals. Spend all $4148 you've got on these
upgrades if you want to. I got myself a Vertex Ridge Body Kit and a set of
Circular RS rims. I'll assume you spent $4000 on the visuals.

2-9- Team DailyDriven Member #4 - Aqualine Bridge Hot Spot

Well, duh. What would you expect? Go challenge the dude!

o Top Speed Battle 1
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $3000 x3 times (+$148)
o Opponent: Damiyan [DailyDriven]
o Opponent Vehicle: '89 Nissan Fairlady Z TT

VERY SIMPLE RACE. Just Floor it all the way through the highway until you
reach the U turn, then Floor it again. Your car should reach a top speed of
151-152 mph no problems, while your opponent car's max is around 144 mph or
so.

Again, race him three times for the cash. If you cannot find him after you
race him, exit the Hot Spot and enter again.

o Game Completion: 3%

2-10- Performance Upgrading #4

Get the Level 4 Nitrous System for $1800. Get the Level 2 Weight Reduction
Upgrade for $2800. Get a Level 3 Transmission for $2500. That should leave you
with a nice $2048. DO NOT SPEND IT!

The Sylvia's performance:
o Power: 401 BHP, Weight: 2648 lbs, Torque: 365 ftlbs
o Cash Remaining: $2048

2-11- Team DailyDriven Boss - Aqualine Bridge Hot Spot

Ahh. Now it's time to kick that Red fella's butt.

o Destination Battle 5
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $6000 (+$2048)
o Opponent: Trin [DailyDriven]
o Opponent Vehicle: '97 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero

You should notice that your top speed has increased greatly thanks to the
upgraded Transmission. The Weight Reduction also gives you a nice boost in the
car's acceleration.

VERY EASY RACE. If you upgraded your car like I told you he'll be a piece of
cake. The track itself is also very easy.

After seeing the bunch of new unlocked stuff, you'll notice that you WON A
CAR! Yep. But let me be the first to tell you that it sucks. The real car we
want at the moment is a Chevrolet Corvette. A nice 500+ stock BHP is THE way
to go. Unfortunately it costs $75850, and the C6-R costs $250000. XD

But let's aim for the regular, cheaper Corvette Z06 first.

2-12- Drifting Tutorials 1 to 7

Open the Map and go to the Doushi Touge, then scroll to the dude in the far
right. He will teach you how to drift. Even if you're the Drifting Sensei, you
still must check and finish these tutorials for the Game Completion %. You
need to watch the videos AND finish the tests successfully to obtain the %.
If you've followed the Walkthrough and used the Silvia, you'll have an easy
time here, as it's a Front Engine Rear Wheel Drive car. Note that these
tutorials will add a 10% chunk to your Game Completion!

You can find help for these Tutorials in the Skills/Drifting Section of the
FAQ. The search code is 3-2-.

o Game Completion %: 13%

2-13- Team KANSAI Member #1 - Doushi Touge

Your first opponent in this Hot Spot.

o Run B Downhill Grip
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $1200 (+$8048)
o Opponent: Masako
o Opponent Vehicle: '03 Subaru Impreza WRX STi V-limited

As the game says: POWER IS KING! And you've got a whole 401 Horses of 'em. So
no big deal. I suggest you do slight short drifts around turns to avoid what's
worse: Crashing into walls. Use the Nitrous to make up for any lost seconds.

Fairly simple race. Enjoy your $9248! And DON'T SPEND IT, YET.

o Game Completion: 13%

2-14- Team KANSAI Member #2 - Doushi Touge

Second opponent. I call him "another easy one".

o Run A Uphill Drift
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$9248)
o Opponent: Katsuhiro
o Opponent Car: '86 Toyota Levin GT-Apex

Really simple race. If you've followed the drifting tutorials as I told you you
should have no problems here. Just try to drift all the way, and occasionally
stop drifting and gain speed. Don't forget to put off Driving Assists. The
course itself is fairly straightforward with no problems. Remember that
finishing first is NOT the key to winning here, it's the drift score.

o Game Completion: 14%

2-15- Team KANSAI Member #3 - Doushi Touge

An RX-7 huh? If you chose the RX-7 this battle should be interesting.

o Run B Uphill Drift
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $3600 x3 times (+$11748)
o Opponent: Reisuke
o Opponent Vehicle: '91 Mazda RX-7 R1

This shouldn't be hard. Just use the same techniques as before. Race this dude
three times for the cash. You'll end up with a nice $22548. DON'T SPEND 'EM!

o Game Completion: 14%

2-16- Team KANSAI Member #4 - Doushi Touge

If you look in the Driver Background, you'll find this dude deaf. Interesting.

o Run A Downhill Drift
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $3200 (+22548)
o Opponent: Hiroto
o Opponent Vehicle: '86 Toyota Sprinter Trueno

Another Easy race. Same Techniques = Same win. The track is, again, very
straightforward with nothing to watch out for. You'll be having a sweet $25748
after you finish!

After watching the crappy cinematic, get ready 'coz we're racing the Boss.

o Game Completion: 15%

2-17- Team KANSAI Boss - Doushi Touge

ZE BOSS! You're probably saying he must be the Drift King or something.

o Run B Downhill Drift
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $9500 (+25748)
o Opponent: Kyosuke
o Opponent Vehicle: '90 RX-7 Infini IV

Duh, another drift race. It's as simple as the previous ones (okay, maybe
slightly harder, but you know what I mean). Just keep 'er driftin' to the
finish line. Also try to avoid increasing the distance gap between you and
Kyosuke, otherwise you may end up with less points, especially as Kyosuke is
actually a comparatively good drifter. Nevertheless, this race is another
"easy" one.

Congratulations! Another bunch of unlockables, and another Car. And you have
officially finished one sixth of the game! :D

o Game Completion: 16%

2-18- Hunting Down Roll Up Races #1

These are drivers roaming around the City. You can approach their Rear Bumper
and flash your lights [R3] to race them. There are 40 of them scattered
around the City. You will usually find them around Bridge Exits, so just go to
any destination on the map, exit, turn around, but instead of choosing Enter,
choose Continue [Triangle]. See the Checklist at the end of this FAQ (Search
Code 4-1-) to see which drivers you missed and track your progress.

For now, you need to beat 8 of these racers. Just chill and drive around the
city and eventually you'll find one. Repeat until you've finished 8 Roll Up
races. Here's the ones I did:

o Roll Up Race 1
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$35248)
o Opponent: Shinichi
o Opponent Vehicle: '93 Toyota Supra

o Roll Up Race 2
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$37748)
o Opponent: Ryozo
o Opponent Vehicle: '93 Honda Acura NSX

o Roll Up Race 3
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$40248)
o Opponent: Yukio
o Opponent Vehicle: '97 Nissan Silvia S14 K's Aero

o Roll Up Race 4
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$42748)
o Opponent: Bull
o Opponent Vehicle: '93 Toyota Supra

o Roll Up Race 5
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$45248)
o Opponent: Tetsuo
o Opponent Vehicle: '90 Mazda RX7 Infini IV

o Roll Up Race 6
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$47748)
o Opponent: Drake
o Opponent Vehicle: Mazda RX-8

o Roll Up Race 7
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$50248)
o Opponent: Marko
o Opponent Vehicle: '04 Nissan 350Z

o Roll Up Race 8
o Vehicle: '93 Nissan Sylvia S14 K's Aero
o Cash Reward: $2500 (+$52748)
o Opponent: Koji
o Opponent Vehicle: Mazda RX-8

If you haven't noticed already, you've got $55248. If you sell your Silvia, you
can AFFORD THE CORVETTE Z06!

o Game Completion: 21%

2-19- Getting a new car #2

Okay, maybe you're getting a little bit confused. What I'd advice you to do is
get the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 as a drift AND race car (no kidding). It's FR,
got great horsepower under the hood, and great acceleration. It drifts like a
charm. What else would you need? So go sell your beloved Silvia, at last, and
go buy the Corvette Z06. Sure, a bit overpriced, but VERY WELL worth it. Just
look how the hell this car performes STOCK.

Another thing: I'll have to warn you about something. The Corvette has some
massive Horsepower, which means you'll have some trouble controlling it's
drifting. I personally advice you to STILL get this car since getting used
to drifting with 700+ HP (when tuned) is the first step to being an expert.

You can still buy any other car you desire, but for this FAQ I'll assume you
got the Corvette. I won't list the cars available for purchase since it's a
very long list this time. You can see it in section 4-2-.

Once you've got it, go to any Upgrade Shop and let's rumble.

2-20- Performance Upgrading #4 / Visual Upgrading #2

This beast still needs some Souping Up. Give it a Level 4 Intake and Exhaust,
Level 4 Fuel and Ignition System, Level 4 Supercharger, Level 4 Intercooler,
and a Level 3 Transmission. Then just spend the remainder of your money on
Visuals.

The Z06's specs:
o Power: 704 BHP, Weight: 3174 lbs, Torque: 586 ftlbs

We're back to smokin' teams, except we'll do it in a Corvette!

o Run B Downhill Drift
o Vehicle: '06 Chevrolet Corvette (C6) Z06
o Cash Reward: $6200 (+$0)
o Opponent: Nei-Chon
o Opponent Vehicle: '06 Mazda Miata MX-5

Simple battle. If you still have the Sylvia, you should STILL have no problems.
If you got the Vette, it's still no problem. One of the best thing of the Z06
is that you can extend the drift for a very long time with no problems. You can
easily use Accel Off drifts too.

The track itself is simple. It's a bit more curvy than before but it isn't
disastrous. Try to use the S turns to make Manji drifts and big points. Don't
forget to clutch pop if you're about to snap out of a drift, and let off the
gas if you're going to spin out. And... COUNTERSTEER! ESPECIALLY IN THE Z06!

And since you're in a Vette, try to catch up with the opponent every now and
then to decrease the loss of points.

Yes, Number 4. Doesn't the $12500 provide a good motive? She's (the driver) got
a '05 NSX though, which means some trouble.

o Run A Uphill Grip
o Vehicle: '06 Chevrolet Corvette (C6) Z06
o Cash Reward: $12500 (+$6200)
o Opponent: Junko (WTF? What kind of name is that? And she's a girl.)
o Opponent Vehicle: '05 Honda Acura NSX

Another Grip race. This race would be quite a challenge with the Corvette. DO
NOT DRIFT THIS TIME, BECAUSE YOU'LL SNAP OUT OF IT AFTER A FIVE MINUTE PERIOD
OF LOSING TRACTION AND CHASING YOUR TAIL LIGHTS!

This race needs the careful kind of person. Slow down and do not drift. Imagine
yourself driving your mama's car. Go slow in turns because:

Full Throttle + Corvette + Turns = Instant Loss.

This applies to this race only of course. Just go slow in turns and floor it in
the straightaways. And for the millionth time: DO NOT DRIFT! As for any other
car, try to avoid drifts too, but don't slow down too much in turns. The Z06
has the power to make up for the lag in turns, but the others (400 BHP or less)
don't.

One more thing: DO NOT COME CLOSE TO THE NSX! THE CRAZY DRIVER IS TOO AGRESSIVE
ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'RE IN THE VETTE! Just keep your distance, and overtake her
from the other side of the road. Just go slow and smooth. Unless you're an
expert, I advice you to avoid full throttle in most turns in this race when
you're in a high end car (500+ BHP), not just the Vette.

By the way, that Lady screaming in Japanese in the background should have got
you a... headache (don't think dirty). Why oh why did they put Japanese songs
in this game? And we can't even select the songs we want to play. Duh. It's
like some of these very heavy metal with people screaming their guts out, but
this time they're screaming it in Japanese.

Show this girl what an American Exotic means (or a Japanese Tuner, if you're
in one). Simple race, but you MUST pay attention to Reiko's lead this time.
You need to always get as close as possible. So try to drift in turns and
ignore the Manji drift in straightaways for now. Other than that, a simple
race for a boss. Another bunch of unlockables, another car, another victory.

o Game Completion: 24% ONE QUARTER OF THE GAME!

Now it's time to inform you of some future plans. As you've seen for yourself,
the Corvette is a drifting monster, but in Grip battles it's major trouble.
So it's time to get another car (not now, but in the near future) to use
besides the Corvette. We need something stable, an MR or a 4WD comes to mind.
My personal advice would be a nice '05 Honda Acura NSX. That's the reason
you shouldn't spend your money on the Vette for now.

o Opponent: Mayumi
o Opponent Vehicle: '99 Nissan Silvia S15 Spec-R

This race is kind of tricky without the Vette. At first it's a long straight,
where the Corvette will have a chance to really shine. But after that, there's
a smooth turn followed by a sharp one. You MUST brake here. Then just go
through the other smooth curve and floor it.

The reason why I said it's tricky because if you don't have a car with good
top speed, you're in trouble in the first part of the race. Other than that,
the race is fairly simple and straightforward.

You have to either slow down, or apply full throttle like I did and hope the

2-38- Getting a new car #3

Uh huh. It's time to get a car for those nasty grip battles the Vette seems to
get screwed on. Basically you need an AWD or MR car. Again, you can choose
whatever you want, but my advice is the Mitsubishi Concept X. This car is just
great in all terms. I know there are better AWD cars out there, like that grey
shiny sexy Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, but you don't want to waste a crapload
of cash on that car... Because the Concept X STILL handles better. Remember we
need a good handling car for those grip battles. The X costs $45,000 BTW.

Again, for this FAQ I'll assume you got the Concept X. Now you should have the
Vette for Drift and Top Speed Battles, and the Concept X for the Grip battles.

Again, see the list in 4-2- for the cars available.

2-39- Performance Upgrading #5 / Visual Upgrading #3

The Concept X sucks in stock form, so we'll give it some soup. Now just go to
any Customization garage and let's roll.

Remember the old "Stickers" trick? Yep, let's do it. If you're too old to
remember, it's when you slap the stickers of the teams you defeated on your
car. Grab any paintjobs you like on the way if you want.

Now install the following Performance parts:
Lv4 Intake/Exhaust for $2781 (Why the 1? Just make it $2780. Greedy bastards)
Lv5 Fuel/Ignition for $5000 (The freaking thieves...)
Lv5 Turbocharger for $7195 (Thieves, again)
Lv4 Intercooler for $1800 (Why aren't things as cheap as the Intercooler...?)
Lv5 Suspension for $10700 (The suspies alone costs a standard Monthly Salary)
Lv4 Brakes for $5200 (These are always expensive, in all racing games.)
Lv3 (yes, Lv3) Transmission for $1875 (finally something cheap)
Lv4 Clutch for $3295 (A freaking CD looking thing for $3295. What's next?)
Lv4 Weight Reduction System for $4640 (Always expensive)
Lv4 Grip Tires for $1338 (Yeah, grippies. Thank god it's cheap)

DO NOT PUT A LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL, DO NOT DO IT. DO NOT DO IT.

That's a total of $43824, sir. You could feed 1000 families from the Third
World countries with that cash, you know. That leaves you with 61676 blingies.
Ah, we forgot the precious Nitrous. Level 4 if you please. That leaves you with
59876 blingies.

Now just spend $4876 on visuals. There isn't much to customize anyways.

The Concept X specs:
o Power: 605 BHP, Weight: 2793 lbs, Torque: 539 ftlbs
o Cash remaining: $55,000

the description you would've known.

o Run A downhill grip
o Vehicle: '06 Mitsubishi Concept X
o Cash Reward: $16800 (+$55000) That's one helluva prize...
o Opponent: Twinkie (duh, and I thought Japanese names were stupid...)
o Opponent Vehicle: '04 Honda Civic Type-R

Heh, they call the Civic a Hot hatch. What would they call a Veyron I wonder?
The Concept X has incredibly awesome grip, which makes this race a piece of
cake, if this was your traditional "dumbass opponent". If you used the Vette,
God be with you. Say your best prayers, and hope that the Vette doesn't go into
a "chasing its tail" psychological problem.

Twinkie is GOOD. You need some skill to some extent to get through the race. My
advice? Don't hit walls and put full throttle all the way unless you're about
to crash. If you followed the Walkthrough and got used to the Vette, this race
will be much easier, since you'll feel like you're in a more stable car (which
is true).

Another advice? Drift. Yep. Drifts in the Concept X are much, MUCH more
controllable than the Vette. Drift through turns and put the pedal to the
metal in straights, try to even use Nitrous Oxide in the process. The best
drifting technique I'd say would be the braking drift. If you follow these
advices you should have an easier time with Twinkie. Also, watch out for the
banking of the track in some turns, it may screw up the balance of the car and
put you in big "WRONG WAY" problems, if you know what I mean...

Rest of the Walkthrough coming soon!

+----------------------+
| Skills and Knowledge |
+----------------------+

3-1- Top Speed Races

Speed, speed, and more speed. That's what people think when races pop up in
their brains. Milking the most speed out of your car is no easy task. There
are several factors that influence top speed, and only the experienced racer
can grasp 'em all.

First influence is the most important one, the Transmission. Basically, most
people know what that is, but don't know how to utilize it to the max. You can
think of the transmission as several handles connected to a wheel. You keep on
rotating one of the handles until you cannot make it go faster, then go and
rotate the other... etc until all wheels are rotating at your maximum capacity.
If there was only one direct handle, the speed of the wheel connected to it
would be greatly reduced, since now only one handle rotates the wheel rather
than several.

In a car, it's the same concept, except that this time "you" are the Engine,
the handles are the gears, and the wheel is, the driving wheels (duh). The
Engine can rotate at a certain maximum rpm, say 7000 rpm, so it rotates one
gear until it reaches 7000 rpm, then rotates the other so that it reaches
7000 rpm as well (meaning that the output rpm for the wheel would be the sum of
the two gears' rotation speed. This continues until all the gears of the
transmission are utilized, THEN this would be the Max Speed of the car.

A long gear ratio means that the gear is large. This means making it rotate
is going to be harder, which means there will be less acceleration. However,
once it gets turning, the maximum RPM of the gear would result in a greater
output to the output shaft (as the Circumference of the gear is larger) thus
resulting in greater top speeds.

A short gear ratio means that the gear is small. This means making it rotate
is easy (thus fast acceleration) but the maximum RPM will output much less
thus cutting down in top speed.

Summary: the bigger the gear ratio, the less the acceleration and the higher
the top speed, and vice versa. Choose the best gear ratio depending on the
race you're entering. Well, you cannot choose the gear ratio in the game, but
you can choose customization packages with predefined gear ratios, giving you
some control over the gear ratios of the transmission.

The second thing that identifies the Top Speed is the Aerodynamics. This
category is subdivided into "shape of the car's body", "downforce", and "ride
height". The shape is pretty self explanatory, the less air ressistance it
induces, the higher the top speed. Install bodykits to solve this problem. The
second thing is the Downforce, which is how much the air pushes down on the
body of the car. The higher it is, the less the top speed but the greater the
stability, and vice versa. Install a spoiler to solve this problem as well.

The third subdivision is the ride height. The less, the better, as less air is
present beneath the car which improves stability and reduces air resistance.
The only way I know of to reduce ride height in this game is by installing
better suspension packs. It automatically reduces ride height for you. In the
game there is no consequence for this, but in real life you would enjoy the
bumpiest ride of your life and the most damaged underside of a car you'll
ever see... >_>

The final factor that affects Top Speed is the weight of the car. The heavier,
the worse. This is self explanatory. Most performance upgrades (except a few)
contribute to weight reduction. If your major issue is weight, install weight
reduction schemes.

Now go to that highway and shred the speed limit signs!

3-2- Drift and Drifting Mechanics

Drifting, the meat of this game. Drifting isn't about crossing the line at 200+
mph, and it isn't about 0-60 takeoffs or quarter mile drags. Instead, it
involves what most people wouldn't want for their car: LOSS OF TRACTION.

Drifting itself involves controlled loss of traction and thus resulting in the
swinging of the car's rear sideways at an angle to the direction of travel.
The heavier the rear, the harder it is to swing it sideways. You cannot make
the front wheels lose traction, only the rear wheels.

The Drivetrain is a major influence on drifting. Each car is operated by it's
engine (duh). But if the engine starts running without being connected to the
cars' wheels, the car won't go anywhere. The Drivetrain basically says where
the engine is located in the car, and which wheels are connected to the engine.

See this:
  ____ ____
 | ___| | __ | This is the wheels connected to the
 | __| | . / < engine. They could be the Rear wheels
 |_| |_|\_\ (R), Front wheels (F) or all wheels (4)

^This is the location of the engine.
Cars could be Front Engined (F), Mid
Engined (M) or Rear Engined (R).

Using the above diagrams, types of drivetrains include:

FF: Front Engined, Front Wheel Drive. Most weight is on the front wheels. The
front wheels also happen to be the driving wheels. Since the Weight is on the
driving and turning wheels, this type of drivetrain outputs great handling. The
great handling also sacrifices drifting ability as well as the power of the
car. Think of it like somebody pulling the car, he won't be able to go at his
maximum power. But if you're pushing the car, it would be much easier to
utilize the person's maximum power. At the same time, you cannot make the
driving wheels lose traction (and thus drift) as they are the front wheels.
This drivetrain is used in the standard, everyday cars. Eg: Ford Focus.

FR: Front Engined, Rear Wheel Drive. The weight is on the front which makes it
easier for the lighter rear part of the car to snap out of stability and
drift. These cars also use their rear wheels as their driving wheels, and that
combined with the above fact makes this type of drivetrain the IDEAL
drivetrain for drifting. The top power of these cars also happens to be
higher than the FF cars (see the push/pull example above).
You'll find this drivetrain in more powerful tuner vehicles and muscle cars.
Eg: Nissan 350Z.

RR: Rear Engined, Rear Wheel Drive. This type is not present in the game, but
it won't hurt to know it, since it will enhance your knowledge and
understanding of the other drivetrains. This drivetrain can do amazing stuff
if manufacturers know how to use it. Think Porsche. The 911 Turbo does not
output much stock power when compared to other supercars, but this car knows
how to utilize it well. The drivetrain gives it amazing stability and virtually
no wheelspin, which means better performance even if the engine isn't that
great. These cars CAN be used for drifting, but they can't beat the FR cars
as most weight is on the rear wheels which means swinging the heavier rear
part of the car would be harder.
This drivetrain is used in a very limited range of supercars.
Eg: Porsche 911 Turbo.

MR: Mid Engined, Rear Wheel Drive. 50% of the 600+ stock HP vehicles use this
drivetrain due to its KEWL RAW POWER. It combines the power capability of the
FR cars and the ability to put it down to the ground of RR cars. This means
that the amazing potential of FR cars is ACTUALLY UTILIZED, resulting in an
amazing vehicle drivetrain. Since this drivetrain has some characteristics of
the FR cars, you can use them for drifting, but again FRs are better as the
rear is usually heavier in MRs than in FRs.
This drivetrain is for seekers of controlled power. Just take an Acura NSX
and give it some great tuning, and voila, an amazing drifter + gripper all in
one. Eg: Acura NSX (duh).

4WD/AWD: All wheel drive cars. The location of the engine is not stated since
it really won't make a difference. These cars are teh stables. If you try to
drift with them, your drift will last for a fraction of a second before the
rear wheels regain traction. This is because the Front Wheels pull the car
out of the drift, stabilizing the rear wheels. This doesn't mean that these
cars are horrible, though, since most 800+ stock HP cars use this. This
drivetrain provides the good handling of an FF, the power of an FR, and some
bonus by utilizing all wheels, resulting in better output of the power.
This drivetrain is for people who want to push their cars to the limits but
maintain control of their power as well. Eg: Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

There are several techniques to snap the rear out of shape.. err.. stability:

1. Braking drift: Simple as slamming the brakes suddenly to shift the car's
weight to the front too much and make the rear wheels lose traction. Push
the brakes hard then turn in the direction of the drift, then balance out
the countersteering with the gas to maintain the drift.

2. Power Braking drift: The same thing as the Braking drift, except you're
using the Emergency brakes instead. The way it works is different though, since
this technique locks up the rear wheels and FORCES them to lose traction
without having to deal with weight shift issues.

3. Power Over Drift: Slam the gas. HARD. Then turn the car suddenly and firmly.
Basically this thing shifts the weight of the car to one side, leading to one
of the rear wheels to lose traction, which makes the other wheel lose traction
as well. Talk about chain reaction.

4. Clutch kick drift: Before you know this technique, you need to know what a
clutch is. Look at this diagram.
                        _ __
                       | | | \

                       |_| |__/

                Flywheel^ ^Clutch Mechanism

Basically the car in default has the Flywheel and the Clutch in contact with
each other. However, when you press the leftmost pedal in Manual cars, the
Clutch "disengages", meaning that the Clutch Plate is pulled from the Flywheel.
This disconnects the link between the Engine and the wheels, allowing the
Engine to be Revv'd freely and the wheels to roll freely as well.

When you Revv the engine too much when the clutch is disconnected, the speed of
the Flywheel exceeds the speed of the Clutch Plate, thus generating friction
between the two materials and sending a "surge of power" through the entire
Drivetrain. This sudden surge can snap the rear wheels out of control and
initiate a drift. However, if the car is stopped, you MUST disengage the Clutch
(in real life). If you don't, your Engine will be unable to rotate the wheels
and the car will stall. In this game, all you need to do is hit the "clutch
kick" button while applying full acceleration to cause a loss in traction in
the rear wheels as described above. Sometimes you need to mash the button for
it to work though... :)

5. Feint drift: Turn the car opposite to the direction of the turn, then
suddenly into the turn. This centrifuges the Center of Gravity of the car to
one side, swinging the rear and causing a loss in traction. The game states it
as "advanced" for some reason, while in reality it's fairly simple.

6. Manji drift: The exact same thing as the Feint drift (from where do these
Japanese dudes get these weird names?), except that you keep on centrifuging
the COG from one side to the other in a straight line. This is simple actually,
all you need to do is turn the car left, then right, then left.. etc. You need
to do it firmly and suddenly though to ensure the initiation of the drift.

7. Accel Off Drift: In this one, you go at very high speeds, then suddenly
release the gas and turn hard. It works in the same way as the braking drift,
only without the brakes.

That's not it, there's still the Suspension and the Differential to talk about,
but that's coming soon.

3-3- Grip Races

Grip Races is like Street X from Need for Speed Underground 2. You basically
race another opponent in a track originally designed for drifting (Touge).

Grip Races, though, aren't as simple as that. There are the sharp turns
originally designed for drifting, then there's the long straightaways. You
basically need a car with good handling (FFs immediately come to mind) as well
as cars with good Top Speed and Acceleration (FRs come to mind). If you
recall from the previous part (3-2-), MRs, even better, AWDs join the
characteristics of these two types of drivetrain together, you basically get
a nice bonus if you drive in one of these. It has good but simple drifting
mechanics and handling for those annoying sharp turns as well as enough power
to handle the straightaways, making them the Car of Choice.

The key for all Grip Races is quick acceleration. People don't seem to see that
coming, but it's true. The straights are usually not long enough for your car
to reach it's Top Speed, and at the same time a car with good handling but
horrible 0-60 means instant loss. Quick Acceleration can be achieved in several
ways.

The first way that comes in mind is the Transmission. A transmission with low
gear ratios means greater acceleration (check out 3-1- for more info). The best
package that allows the best acceleration is the Level 4 system.

The second way is also very fundamental. The weight. Weight affects 0-60 than
Top Speed. If you get a very powerful engine and use it to drive something
as heavy as a tank, what would you expect? Reducing weight is usually done by
most upgrades (level 4 and 5), but if you only want to reduce raw weight, use
Weight Reduction Systems.

Another way is less important, but still contributes to the 0-60 of a car. It
is the aerodynamics (see 3-1- for more info). Install bodykits and spoilers
to enhance the aerodynamics of the car and thus raise acceleration.

The final way is a bit more indirect. You probably won't expect it, but the
SUSPENSION. Yes. A stiffer suspension means less energy wasted in bound and
rebound and thus means that more of the engine's energy is used to drive the
car forward (rather than push the rear of the body down against the wheels
which would be the case if the suspension was soft). In real life that would
lead to a bumpier, less comfy ride, but dude, this ain't real life. Install
any package with stiffer Suspies and you're done.

One thing you could do is DRIFT in GRIP RACES. Oh yes. That's of course
provided that you can control the drifting of the car (meaning that you
shouldn't take an 800+ HP car to a grip race and start drifting). Although
the game says it's better not to, it's actually better to do in some situations
with some cars. It will save you the loss in time and speed resulting from a
traditional "brake and go smoothly" strategy for the turns.

The final key to Grip races is NOT TO HIT WALLS. Simple as that. Brake hard if
you're heading towards a wall. Walls can slow you down much harsher than you'd
think, especially later in the game.
